I need to know if Hathaway is adorable and exactly how much time I'm expected to suffer through Crowe singing if I actually watch this film. Also, is Hooper as bewildering a choice of director for a big-scale musical as his previous films suggest. Full report, MA.

I'll do my best.

Though it may just be a report filled of gifs of Eddie Redmayne...

The issue is, there are so many films this year that I just can't muster up any emotion for - Les Mis, ZDT (are those the right letters?), Lincoln, Armour - none of them I want to sit through. I don't actively don't want to watch them, I just don't actively want to watch them either. The subject matter just doesn't inspire me to watch them.

And then all the films I wanted to see - Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django, Deep Blue Sea, Seven Psychopaths - I never get round to watching. It's irritating.

Les Mis I'm really struggling with. Same with Life of Pi. My feeling that the book was nowhere near as deep as people keep telling me it was isn't helping with Pi either. Amour, part of me wants to see, but part of me also doesn't really care about. Mainly because I have issues with Haneke as a director. I do recognise the excellence of some of his work, but I always find it a chore making myself watch them to begin with and there's nothing he's made that I would find it difficult to live without as a film fan. Beyond that, I'm finding the Oscar season a year of unexpected delights. ZDT, Lincoln, Django all surprised the hell out of me, and the fact that the nominations have been wrong-footing everyone is wonderful. I think the Oscars are fun to watch and speculate and bitch about, and it's always hilarious to watch people melting down because 6000 strangers didn't love the exact same films as them.

Life of Pi - it's alright. It's very impressive that they made it into a film, and the boy is fantastic in it. But I have no desire to see it again. The tiger is gorgeous though - I know it's fake, but it's like a larger, more endangered and much more vicious version of one of my cats - it's really cute.

I'm just very behind at the moment - I've only seen three of the films up for Best Picture at the moment. Lincoln, I want to see for Day-Lewis and Lee Jones cos both of them rule, and Django I've been super psyched about for a while, - I just haven't got round to seeing it yet.

Though there have been some cracking good films this year - Moonrise, Pirates! and SLP have all been great And Magic Mike, the Avengers, Cabin in the Woods - it's been a really entertaining year as well as some really beautiful scenes.

I think of Miss Brodie with a lot of films at the moment though - for those that like that sort of thing, that is the sort of the thing they like - that sums up Life of Pi for me.

Life of Pi is just one of those films. It's adapted from a book I don't care about by a director I mostly dislike and a screenwriter who I find rather bland. I'm not sure there's much point in spending two hours watching it when I could take that time to try something I have more interest in. At the moment the sole thing pushing me towards seeing it is the Oscars.

Not sure I agree on the Hooper front so far he has proven a very decent director espically with The Damned Untied, also King's Speech was quite glossy too. Think he is a good director for this because he seems to work well with actors and I think the performances are key to this sustaining.

I'm seeing Life of Pi tomorrow and Les Mis on Saturday. I live in a family of Les Mis fanatics - my brother and his girlfriend know all the words to the songs off by heart. It's worrying but it's made me love the musical as well.

Yeah I saw it in the West End a few years ago and loved it. Most of my housemates at uni are obsessed as well so something tells me I'm gonna be seeing it more than once. At the start of this week, there were already showings that had sold out at my local cinema, it's crazy just how popular the musical is. Not complaining about that though.

I'd rather watch The Notebook tbh. It doesn't go all annoying French film in that way annoying French films do - there's an initial discussion between Trintignant and Huppert that just made me go 'FFS' and switch off.

There should be an automatic exclusion in any awards list for musicals. Film is not the medium for musicals and never has been, I will be really vexed if everyone says it is really great and I am forced to watch it . . .

I guess it depends on the director. They're not all useless like Rob Marshall, just plonking the camera down and letting the stageshow do the work.

The ingenuity of some of the directors in the 30s and 40s was staggering. I just picked up The Pirate to watch again as well

Personally, I just cannot balance story telling with the sudden desire for characters to break into song for no apparrent reason, no matter how good the stars or direcors may be. I am a pretty open minded chap and will go with most plot ideas if properly introduced, but singing a story along ? Why ?
I am also confused as to why perfectly good actors suddenly feel they have voices worthy of song just because they are in a musical, some actors can sing and 'tother way around but that is the exception, not the rule !
