Daniel-Day Lewis for Best Actor! Daniel-Day Lewis for Best Actor! Daniel-Day Lewis for Best Actor!
* haven't even seen Lincoln yet, lol.

Anyone know if Les Miserables will be considered for Oscars 2013, as they're opening pretty close to the ceremony?..

There'll be a qualifying showing before the turn of the year.

Do you guys think there is a chance for Daniel Day-Lewis to win an Oscar this year? Sounds kind of unbelievable however good his performance is, because that would mean Academy has to give away a THIRD statuette to a non-American actor, who also hasn't even been in so much stuff, and isn't really "Hollywood" with all his eccentricity and being constantly away from the industry.

If I was voting I'd take into account that, for me, he got one he shouldn't have.

But he'a generally a good actor, it's a biog which is always good, and it's the very Americal Lincoln which is probably even more so. I don't see why not.

I'm happy with My Left Foot I just don't worship at the church of TWBB.

http://www.empireonline.com/forum/tm.asp?m=2036681&mpage=2&key=oscar%2Cperformance

YOu might like an older thread that talked about Oscar performances and the deservedness.  For the same question, DDL's performance was probably least of those 5 for me. Looking at the other films nominees, Amalric and Gosling would have squeezed a couple of them out too.

Wait, what? Gosling and Amalric weren't nominated that year. I can't figure out what I'm missing here I also don't think that DDL did worse than Clooney, Depp, Jones or Vortensen. If anything, I think the competition was just too weak that year

C'mon, he won every single Best Actor award that year! It's not just the Academy, he swept everything! Surely that means something

EDIT: I couldn't find anything on TWBB in that thread. What I did find though, is another Oscar for Daniel Day-Lewis, which he should have definitely gotten - for Gangs of New York. Then Lincoln would've been his fourth, lol

Day-Lewis was superb in TWBB, but I'd also say it was a fairly weak year in that category.

I think what elab is saying is that even though they weren't nominated, Gosling for Lars and the Real Girl and Almaric for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, would have been better choices for best actor. They should have been nominated, she's right.

Aaah, now I get it. Thanks. Yeah, they definitely should've been nominated! And probably instead of a few others that were. But better performances than DDL? Nnnaaaah, I don't think so.

Looking at the list of who was eligible that year, I think I'd have nominated

Daniel Day Lewis
JGL - The Lookout
Ryan Gosling
Cillian Murphy - The Wind That Shakes the Barley
Timothy Spall - Pierrepoint

Going through some of these old eligibility lists, the Academy rules on release dates means that we could have had some cracking, if odd, line-ups. Best picture 1993 could have been

Blue
Groundhog Day
The Long Day Closes
My Neighbor Totoro
Naked

But  hat some random person thinks doesn't impact on my opinion - one note, shouty and ultimately quite annoying. I find the film damn near unwatchable now - and would have to turn off before the idiocy of milkshakes

And as Matty said - I had a quick look through the films nominated in other categories to assume eligibility of actors who didn't make it to the final 5  And I'd add Spall's Pierrepoint as well. But this is a category that missed Thewlis in Naked. So while this is a guessing game it is really just for another silly pointless award (yes, I know that's a lame and old argument).

Except for short animation - it really grinds my gears when they frak that up!

Unlikely, especially without the SAG nom, but Sam Rockwell was fantastic in Seven Psychopaths. I'm a huge fan so I'd love to see him finally get some recognition.

Remember the year they thought Foreign Film was a toss up between White Ribbon and A Prophet and Secret in Their Eyes (rightly IMO  won). And Haneke lost out because of rules shenanigans for Hidden?

I'm wondering if they'll do it again and think War Witch may take the prize. I was wondering if Amour might get into the main list though?

I like Cluzet but it didn't really hit a chord with me. I was going to try it again though - I think it's one of those ones that might work better if you're in the mood for it so I wouldn't write it off at the moment. The whole opening scene and then the other intro just felt quite forced and that didn't start it off very well.

Haven't seen No but fortunately should be able to next month. And my Icelandic DVD place is still sold out of The Deep annoyingly. I tried there ages ago as it's where I got Reykjavik Rotterdam, and it's still not back in stock.

Amour is a tough one. It's the kind of film you can see sneaking in there and picking up a few non-surprising surprises. But part of me isn't feeling it, probably because Haneke is a director who is always predicted and then the films don't perform.

Yeah, I'm thinking he's got to break through one day into the nominations and although I haven't seen it yet, it sounds accessible enough to do so.

Yeah, it's just the lack of precursor love stopping me predicting it. I'm thinking Riva or screenplay are the most likely places it could turn up. Surprised you don't have Leo down even as a wildcard though.

I should really have put him and Waltz done as an 'either/or' pick, really. He might well be nominated, but I can't help thinking they'll split the vote between them.
