Yeah, the reality is that the films Nolan has been making for the last 7 or 8 years just aren't the kind of films the Academy is bothered about. I'm surprised the LOTR films were, in a lot of respects.

Yeah, but the LOTRs were awesome

Would be very happy to see Peter Jackson and The Hobbit do well of course, but for crying out loud, can we now please give Julianne Moore an Oscar???!!!? The English Teacher - Best Actress - 2013 - campaign starts here...

Yes. This has the potential to be one of the most amazing things in the world. Guy Pearce, Nick Cave and Gary Oldman (then Tom Hardy too) - I'm drooling at the talent (and Guy Pearce...(and hell, the other three too).

Seven Pyschopaths could get a screenplay nomination (like In Bruges did).

I'm fully expecting a Promethesus vs Batman vs The Hobbit battle for all the technical awards

Unless Lincoln does a J. Edgar, I'm assuming Daniel Day Lewis will be nominated. Then again, the Oscars don't seem to notice when Spielberg is shit, so even if it's bad it will be nominated.

There are an awful lot of big names vying for Best Actor this year. Off the top of my head, there's:

Daniel Day Lewis - Lincoln
Bill Murray - Hyde Park on Hudson
Philip Seymour Hoffman - The Master
John Hawkes - The Surrogate
Martin Freeman - The Hobbit
Hugh Jackman - Les Miserables
Brad Pitt - Cogan's Trade
Terence Stamp - Song for Marion (maybe a wildcard, but I'm sure if it's good, BAFTA will nominate him)
Jude Law/Aaron Johnson - Anna Karinea
Tom Hardy - The Wettest County

Leonardo Di Caprio could get one for The Great Gatsby as well, though I'm not sure. He'll have the added bonus of being considered for Django Unchained, as well as being snubbed before.

Isn't Oscar Isaac the lead?

I'm having trouble seeing Freeman get in, tbh. The only acting nomination from all three of the Rings films was for McKellan. Even when it came to the juggernaut that was RotK, they didn't give it any acting noms. Unless he's absolutely amazing, I just don't see it

I think it'll be the first four on that list and then Jackman.

It's clearly foolish discussing this in April, but that first four would be awesome.

I can tell you right now there is absolutely no chance of that happening.

And I agree with Matty. Trying to predict the nominations at this stage is a pretty futile exercise. I can't imagine many predicted nominations for Slumdog, the Hurt Locker & The Artist.

The Master will do well though.

I haven't done too bad in my predictions previous years but I didn't get the big winners like the ones you've mentioned. It's all judged really on what looks set to be a big Oscar contender. As for Ricci, I never caught the film but she looked good in the trailer, probably is a long shot.

Well, I've seen it. She's not particularly great, the film itself is bloody awful & given the next Oscars is just under a year away, this will be in bargain bin section in supermarkets long before the 'for your consideration' short lists begin to emerge.

Your other shouts are not too shabby though.

My vaguish reading of future reviews - I'm going to say Beasts of the Southern Wild will walk it all.

Unless they really want to slap down the Co$ and feel inexplicably guilty about making the right choice on the last PTA.

It's a very good film (Beasts) I just can't wait for the backlash if Dark Knight Rises doesn't make it in to the nominations. And I really hope it doesn't.

If it's in the top 10 at the end of the year then the choice must be even more woeful than last year and Oscar needs to pack up and go home.

Even if it was a great film I think I'd still want it to miss out, the reaction will be hilarious. Beyond that, the Academy didn't like the first two films, I'm not sure why they'd take to this one in a big way.

The Dark Knight Rises will get no big nominations next year. Zilch, nada, zero, nothing. Fuck, there's more chance of me having a threesome with Mila Kunis and Kristen Wiig than DKR has of getting best pic and director nominations.

No matter how expertly put together and immensely entertaining Nolan's Batman flicks are, they will always be summer popcorn fodder in the Academy's eyes. It's a shame because they're better than most of the crap that gets nominated.

They wouldn't make my shortlist for any year, tbh. I think the bigger thing is that they have to be the film each voter loved most that year. That's why I think it'd be a surprise if DKR gets in, the love for Ledger couldn't get the film enough number one votes to make the nominees list, so I don't see Rises, which has no real world emotional punch powering it, getting in either.

It would seem a bit odd to get nods for a film that's not generally, I think, been seen as as good as its predecessor? I don't think summer fodder has got anything to do with it tbh.

I will bust something laughing if Avengers gets nominated though

Although making up for fuck-ups is a separate factor. TDK wasn't one, though, IMO.

I have a sneaking suspicion it might get in. I mean Avatar, District 9, Inception...Avengers got pretty good reviews, made a hell of a lot of money and I think there's a lot of goodwill towards it. I mean it would be fecking stupid but it is the Academy Awards.

Iím going to sayÖ

Anna Karenina
Argo
Beast of the Southern Wilds
Django Unchained
Les Miserables
Life of Pi
Lincoln
Moonrise Kingdom
The Hobbit Part I of III
The Master

Alt: The Avengers, Zero Dark Thirty, Cloud Atlas, Magic Mike, Great Expectations.
