Well, why not?

Check the first few pages of last year's threads for the horror at the thought of Streep winning an Oscar for playing Thatcher.

And not one person mentioned The Artist.

Anyway, early predictions?

Les Miserables
Argo
Life of Pi
Brave
Django Unchained
The Great Gatsby
The Dark Knight Returns.
The Master

They're the ones that strike me as early contenders with a whole bunch of acting/directing nominations to come out of them.

I really hope Hyde Park on Hudson hits big. If it does, Murray, Linney, Olivia Colman and Olivia Williams could all get noms.

It'd also be nice if Moonrise Kingdom did well. Hopefully Wes Anderson will do enough to get a nom at least.

Unpopular Opinion: I didn�t like On the Road so the film adaptation isn�t on my radar and Lincoln is probably even less so.

Yeah I'm not too bothered about Lincoln myself but Daniel Day Lewis has to be pretty much nailed on for an Oscar nom I'd imagine.

Anyone holding out any hopes for Gangster Squad? It has an impressive cast, I'm just not sure of the approach it'll take. Also, The Wettest County has got me crossing my fingers.

Oh, forgot Joe Wright has an adaptation of Anna Karenina coming out this year. That could go down well with the Oscars.

I don't know, it could be good, but the title's pretty goofy and I'm not convinced by the few photos I've seen.

It probably won't (I don't think The Hobbit will either, for what it's worth), but I think at this early stage it's still a contender.

I just think that if there wasn't enough of an emotional push to get The Dark Knight nominated, and there wasn't enough of a feeling that he'd been snubbed in the past to get him a directing nom for Inception, that the new film is going to need to be exceptional to even stand a chance. I keep seeing Return of the King brought up as a reason why Nolan will win next year, but people tend to forget that all three of the Rings films had been nominated before it won.

Yeah, the reality is that the films Nolan has been making for the last 7 or 8 years just aren't the kind of films the Academy is bothered about. I'm surprised the LOTR films were, in a lot of respects.

Disappointed with the oscars 2012, drive should've been nominated and won.

anyway heres my 2013 predictions in as many categories as i could think.

best picture:
The Dark Knight Rises (Nolan)
The Master (P.T Anderson)
Lincoln (Spielberg)
Django Unchained (Tarantino)
Inside Lewlyn Davis (Coen brothers)
Nero Fiddled (Allen)
The Great Gatsby (Luhrmann)
Only God Forgives (Winding Refn)

Lincoln is a favourite but the master, tdkr, django unchained and possibly only god forgives (if the academy decides to forgive refn for not nominating drive) will be up there.

Best Director:
Christopher Nolan (TDKR)
P.T Anderson (The Master)
Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained)
Steven Spielberg (Lincoln)
Woody Allen (Nero Fiddled)

This is shaping up to be the most exciting category, Lincoln will most likely win best picture so spielberg is automatically in the running, however nolan, anderson and tarantino have never won the award before and they are all due so this could be very interesting.

Best Actor
Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln)
John Hawkes (The Surrogate)
Phillip Seymour Hoffman (The Master)
Bill Murray (Hyde Park on Hudson)
Ryan Gosling (Only God Forgives)

DDL and Hawkes are the 2 favourites, hawkes has never won and ddl has one twice already but ddl's role is so iconic it will be hard to turn down, hoffman will also be in contention and Gosling or murray could pull a surprise its anyones guess.

Best Actress
Helen Hunt (The Surrogate)
Keira Knightley (Anna Karenina)
Amanda Seyfried (Lovelace)
Ellen Page (Nero Fiddled)
Andrea Riseborough (Shadow Dancer)

My predictions in this category are a bit more risky, apart from hunt and knightley, andrea riseborough's shadow dancer performance was incredible and ellen page in a woody allen film sounds great. My money's on page.

Best Supporting Actor
Leonardo DiCaprio (Django Unchained)
Joaquain Pheonix (The Master)
Woody Harrelson (Seven Psychopaths)
Russell Crowe (Les Miserables)
Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises)

Leo will win, pheonix might cause an upset.

Best Supporting Actress
Amy Adams (The Master)
Sally Field (Lincoln)
Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables)
Tilda Swinton (Moonrise Kingdom)
Carey Mulligan (The Great Gatsby)

Adams is due simple as field or mulligan the only others with a chance.

Best Original Screenplay
Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained)
Woody Allen (Nero Fiddled)
P.T Anderson (The Master)
Nicolas Winding Refn (Only God Forgives)
Wes Anerson (Moonrise Kingdom)

Very exciting talent in this category, tarantino should win and porbably will but allen and anderson are firmly in contention.

Best Adapted Screenplay
Coen Brothers (Inside Llewlyn Davis)
Tom Kushner, John Logan and Paul Webb (Lincoln)
Baz Luhrmann, Craig Pierce (The Great Gatsby)
Christopher Nolan, David S. Goyer, Jonathan Nolan (The Dark Knight Rises)
David Magee (Life of Pi)

It's a 3 horse race between coen brothers, nolan and his team and the guys behind lincoln, I think nolan will just edge it due to popularity among american people, lack of recognition for tdk and it having a better script than the other 2.

anyway i'll probably end up looking a complete fool in 1 years time but nevermind

to all those thinking the dark knight rises wont be nominated when the dark knight wasn't there was a maximum of 5 films in the best pic category now with more films in the category tdkr will definately be nominated.

Yeh, but expanding the numbers just to desperately shove in a film that wasn't good enough to get in the 5 was always a bit silly. The fact they couldn't even find 10 this year kind of proved the point, especially given how dreadful some of those they put in were. I'd be surprised, given the first two, if it had a chance at any of the major awards. But then - we all know Oscar doesn't care about 'good'

I've not got much of a clue about next year but there are a couple of films coming up here that should probably be on my anticipated list, which is helpful.

Well it's about the commercial side of it. It's got nothing to do with the Academy at large being outraged that The Dark Knight missed out. If they cared that much they'd have voted for it (and they didn't, not in picture, direction or screenplay) It's the Board of Governors trying to make the nominations list match the taste of the public. So you get films like Wall-E and The Dark Knight, that were huge hits, not getting nominated, and the assumption is that they must have been number six and seven on the nominations list. But that's not necessarily the truth. And that's what expanding the number of nominees has demonstrated. Take this year, if it had been five nominees you would have had The Descendants, Midnight in Paris, The Artist, Hugo and I'm going to guess either Moneyball or The Help, with Malick getting the lone director nomination. And if that had happened, everyone would have said that Tree of Life, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Tinker Tailor and Drive were the ones that just missed out. Except we know that they're not. I loved Mara's performance and I adored Drive and Tinker, but the Academy in general couldn't find a place for them. Instead they voted for War Horse and ELAIC.

I remember that discussion at the time. But it is silly - it's a fairly blatant acknowledgement up front that your awards are kind of nonsense. It's rare the awarding body are so open about it

I think the other thing to remember is that the change to ten nominations came the year that Sid Ganis stepped down as Academy president. And I always thought part of it was him trying to leave his mark on the ceremony.

I think the biggest problem with the way the nominations work is the whole bizarre voting system. I honestly think it'd be better if they worked it on a straightforward points system. At least that way they could be sure the nominated films really were the ones most loved by the Academy. As it stands now, a film can get nominated by being on a small amount of ballots, simply by being number one on most of them, yet a film can be number two and three on every single ballot and not get nominated.
