I think Whedon has cracked this - most importantly Hulk looks meticulously awesome just from these snippets. If you freeze the pic of him roaring, you can see the hairs on his neck, amazing skin texture and perfect muscle definition. I thought the last one was too comic extreme - this one looks on the money.

Johannson looks out of her depth. Awkwardly trying to look stern and serious. Renner looks constipated actually so does Johannson and Cap's costume is not as good as the Joe Johnston original. He looks way too padded. This style will date and possibly wont ripen to a mature level of kitsch retro-ness until maybe 2040 -2050.

The Avengers is going to come up against the same problems the X-Men series did; too many characters. There isn't enough time to develop them all properly and there's too much going on. The film is cluttered. This looks good and I'll give it a chance but...

Its got to be Skrulls!! U see them jumping from ships in the superbowl trailer! Also a classic Avengers badguy! Awesome! Not liking the Caps new cossie, but loving the scenes where Tony Stark suits up to be Iron Man!! CAN NOT WAIT!!

I'm genuinely surprised by the focus on Johansson in the marketing / production of this film. Who is her character supposed to be exactly? All I remember about her is that she was shoehorned into an already over packed plot in IRON MAN 2, and she had no personality. In all these photos she just poses with her guns, a vacant, bored look on her face, trying desperately to look cool or tough. Johansson is fine and all (I guess), but surely it's odd she's gotten more of a focus in the promotional material than many of the actual superheroes.

Captain America decides to take the subway... and feels a little bit silly.

Not sure why people are saying there won't be enough time to develop each character? Marvel released separate movies for each one of these guys so when it came to the avengers they would already be well developed! I must agree that Cap's costume looks ridiculous and doesn't have the grittiness of the war torn version. As for Scarlett getting lots of attention, well its because she is...er...well FIT!!

It's camp and silly? Well yes, it should be. C'mon! I'm a Capt America fan but me and the rest of my race of fanboys, should realise how ultra bright, optimistic and camp as a row of tents the captain is. Batman he ain't. He had wings in the comics. Wings on his head, c'mon! And we love him for it. Please no brooding, please lots of boy scout heroics! As for black Widow...WHAT is she doing here? Pleeeease no repeat of Iron Man 2's pout-pout-sometimes be fiesty- we are feminists at heart- but oh, look at that butt stuff! It's bland and annoying. I speak as a straight guy, so if you can't win a straight, lusty guy over with those antics...change it! She's actually a good actress...Make her act. Give her some dimension or reason to be there.
