BIG BOSS WANTS YOU!

Konami are officially recruiting for the next MGS game so I suppose we can take that as official confirmation. Doesn't mention if it's Metal Gear Solid 5 though.

The 80s references (Diamond Dogs) and the Fox Engine screenshots that were released a few months ago mean this is going to be Peace Walker 2 / Big Boss in Africa / pre Outer Heaven and Metal Gear MSX. Whether they call it Metal Gear Solid 5 or not is irrelevant now. "High end consoles" means this wont be another portable game though.

The dog in the pic is a Rhodesian Ridgeback. There was conflict in Rhodesia right up until 1980, it fits nicely between Peace Walker and Metal Gear 1.

Hopefully we'll see Big Boss' descent into madness.

Just read on the wiki that Gray Fox was involved in the Rhodesian war.

quote:

It was around this time that Frank killed two people in Rhodesia, during the Rhodesian Civil War, before discovering they had a young girl. Feeling immense guilt, he adopted her, and cared for her as a younger sister. In 1980, Big Boss took Frank and his "sister" to the United States. Afterwards, Frank and Big Boss returned to Africa to continue fighting a war, leaving her behind in America.

That sister is of course Naomi Hunter.
Intrigued by this news. I think it's inevitable that we'll get remakes of MG1 and 2 in the near furture.

The 80s references (Diamond Dogs) .

You mean the David Bowie album from 1974? (reminds me of the Major Tom reference in Snake Eater.)

New console MGS is always good though. I have to get the HD collection and replay them, it's been ages.

That would explain why they didn't release Peace Walker on the HD collection ...

I foresee a bundled release with this special addition or perhaps a separate HD DL version to spark interest again just before this is released.

EDIT: I MEANT THIS! : I got mixed up with Portable Ops http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_gear_solid_portable_ops.

Peace Walker is the third game in the HD collection with Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3.

I don't get why they just skipped it. It's set after MGS3 and before Peacewalker ... so why skip it?!?! WHY!?!? ... SNNAKKKKE???? SSSSSSSNNNNNNNNNAAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

What 87% on meta critic is something to be ashamed of? I only ever heard great things about it. Thought Peacewalker just built off from its design too. Ive read they made a special edition that was worse than the standard ... but as I said the standards meant to be good ... you played it and dont rate it rich?

WHat the fuck is Peacewalker??! I've never heard of it!

I've loved the MGS games, Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater were fucking great and I even like Guns of the Patriots, but I have never ever heard of PeaceWalker!?! Is that PS3 HD Collection worth picking up just to play it?

It was a PSP game now on the HD collection.

If you've got someone to co-op with it's a must buy. Not sure what it's like with randoms. Story wise it's supposed to be the missing link between MGS3 and MG1 (i think portable ops isn't official canon , might be wrong though).

Pretty awesome game for a normal console let alone a handheld.

No it was a dull kidnap sim that mainly involved walking from A to B to reach the red X on the map in between dragging soldiers very slowly to put them in the back of your truck. Then again I don't think MGS4 was good and people called it a masterpiece in the gaming press. I'm more in the mindset that Sons of Liberty should never had a sequel, which isn't that uncommon.

So it's not designed as a single player game/campaign? That's one of the things I love about MGS, they're great single player games.

It can be played solo but the campaign is structured as missions. There's also a lot (100?) extra missions that flesh out the campaign using members of MSF (The merc unit you are building).

Don't be fooled by the PSP origins and co-op though, it's a full fledged Metal Gear story.

Not played it yet as haven't had a PSP for some time, but from what I've read it's based around co-op but can be played normally, albeit with some added difficulty on some missions. They did a fuller Metal Gear title than Portable Ops, but still wanted to cater to Japan's co-op Monster Hunter PSP playing scene. Looking forward to the HD though.

Indeed. Though I'll be honest ... not a great trailer in regards to the actual content I thought. Though it was quite long for a teaser.

Seems to actually be Snake and not Big Boss then? I've heard it mentioned it will be a prequel to MGS5. But with all the references to MGS Peace Walker etc I'm sure there will be some flash back sections with the Boss?!

Well visually it looks sweet as. I do hope they have the mission structure of MGS Peacewalker with lot's of side missions you can complete and be ranked in. That made it so addictive and added a quick play element to the game.

Too many games to play so I only rented the anniversary collection and I've got four on rental now. Need to find the time to play them.

Funny for me as the first one I actually completed was three. So I've played them in this order

2 - Shared the last end of a playthrough at a mates house.
3 - Bought and completed myself.
1 - Started but couldn't get into it at the time.
Peace Walker - Finished the main story (there are many side quests).
4 - Started but haven't had the time.

Annoying as I want to finish 1 and do my own playthrough of 2 before 4. But they are painful to go back to especially as I don't have the nostalgia factor or previous memories of the game to fall back on.

Huh? It's Big Boss. They are just calling him Snake... again ...for some reason.

Personally it looks beautiful, but don't they always? Peace Walker was fucking terrible. I'd love for them to rekindle that magic last seen in 2004 but I just don't think it's possible, Kojima and Konami have lost their way big time. More dumb filler pre MG storylines don't excite me, particularly after that stupid mammal pod crap.

I meant it seems to be Snake rather than Big Boss! I kept hearing babble that it was Snake and it's pre MGS4 and well he get's called Snake in the trailer?! All the initial artwork suggested it would be Big Boss (with all the Fox Hound stuff etc too). So I thought it may be a mix of parts with Snake and parts where it will flashback to sections with Big Boss? I am hoping it is still big boss as I quite liked the mini management of Motherbase + the MG.

ANYWHO I loved Peace Walker! It wasn't a true console version but it played well. hough agree the story was a let down. Whilst I like the MGS artwork having them as cut scenes didn't work well on console. I'm sure the whole package was far more impressive on the PSP which you have to remember it originated from.

Um no, really not. Big Boss has been using the same Code Name for the last 3 games, this isn't Solid Snake, it's still Naked Snake. (stop laughing at the back) It's a direct sequel to Peace Walker since the kid in the cage is named as Chico. And I don't care for PW because I thought the writing was total garbage regardless of the PSP format.

I've only played 1 & 2 and, while great games (hey, I liked 2), the story is convoluted to fuck. I am tempted to get the HD remakes just to get a catch up. Would things be any clearer?

Big Boss is Solid Snake's father. Well, Snake is a clone of Big Boss. Big Boss was the enemy in the first two Metal Gear games and was assumed dead from Metal Gear Solid (PS1) onwards.

The stories of Metal Gear Solid 3 and 4 aren't as complicated as 2 and they tie in quite well so playing them would make things clearer. I personally loved all 4 games but MGS1 still has the best story.

Anyway, yeah it looks very good. Regardless of the time it is set, that's definitely Big Boss - he has an eye patch. I'd like to see both Big Boss and Solid Snake being playable in a sort of Godfather 2 way.

As MGS1 is still the benchmark for me, I can't help but have more of a soft spot for Solid.

BIG BOSS
The chief commander of FOX-HOUND.
After his career in special forces like Green Beret, SAS and GSG9, he became the FOX-HOUND chief commander.
He gives tips to SOLID SNAKE through wireless communication about various things like the usage of weapons and equipment.

The antagonist of (Spoiler warning!) Metal Gear and (double spoiler) Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, which were back on the MSX2 console and are available on the recent HD collection. They are summarised in the briefing of Metal Gear Solid and are central to many story elements in that game. He later became the protagonist in MGS3 which served as a prequel to elaborate on his motivations and has since spawned two portable games, which this new Ground Zeroes title is a direct follow up to. So... you might want to start at the beginning before even thinking about this one....

Personally I have been totally jaded with the series since 2004 after which they writing abilities of the development team and the sanity of the director seem to have gone down the toilet, leaving the recent games feeling like a mix of dire fan fiction and self parody. I live in hope they get their act together, but as soon as they mentioned Peace Walker character names in the newest trailer the idea of it turning out good is looking slim.

Not really

I know they have different motivations and ultimately BB becomes the bad guy, but by giving them both virtually the same personality traits, the name 'Snake' and even an eyepatch (Solid since MGS4, I think there's been a very real attempt at blending the two characters into one 'Snake'. I think the tagline to MGS 3 was "Snake is Back", when strictly speaking, the Snake we knew wasn't back at all, it was Big Boss.
Anyway, I see the series aiming towards a remake of MG1 and MG2 which would be most welcome for me as I never played them.

Off on a tangent - has anyone picked up on a fear of vampires that they both possess? BB talks to Paramedic (MGS3) about Dracula and is clearly creeped out by it and I got the impression that SS seems to do be very wary of Vamp. I know he's not actually a vampire (although he possesses the traits) and SS is right to be wary as he is seemingly immortal, but I sort of got the impression that he'd rather not go up against him unless absolutely necessary. This is evident in the sniping section in MGS 2 when he will shoot anything you ask him to but won't shoot Vamp even though he's in a better position (to the side) than Raiden. Obviously having Snake do the job for you would make it too easy but I wonder if there's a little more to it. Maybe it's just me.

MGS 3 is my favourite and I enjoyed PW. The story of Big Boss' transformation from hero to villain has slowly been unfolding really well. The ending of 3 (Spoiler) where you pull the trigger and kill the original Boss in that flowery field was probably my most memorable Metal Gear moment so far. PW seemed like it could have been the straw that broke the camels back and pushed BB over the edge.

When you're playing a series that deals with Vampires (almost), Telekinesis and Giant robots are you really that surprised about the stuff in PW? I'm glad they are filling in the blanks between PW and MGS 4.
