Ok time for Sleazys quick review on the Neo Geo X.
When I first saw pics of the upcoming system I knew I had to have one, I remember playing loads of Neo Geo games as a kid in the arcades at Whitley Bay and drooling over them in the pages of C&VG but like most of us I knew I could never afford one.
Fast forward to now and whilst a PSP and the Virtual Console have scratched that itch to a point I finally have the chance to own a "Neo Geo".
I managed to snag this one for £100 unopened from a fella on Gumtree which was a great start. When I opened it up the packaging is all very nicely done and even the sticker seals have the NeoGeo logos on them.
I had a play last night and for the most part its a great system, it essentially breaks down into 3 parts:
The Handheld: This is the system itself, its about the size of a PSP but thinner. Its lighter than you expect but feels very welll made. The stick is very nice and produces and audible click when moved, its far better than the D pads seen on PSP, GameGadget, DS and the like. The back of the unit has a rubberised finish with SNK inlain in silver. It really does look like a prime piece of kit. The screen is decent and everything runs very well on it, It doesnt look Vita good though. There are usb, hdmi, headphone and AV ports.
The Console: This is what had originally caught my eye, its essentially just a charging/TV dock but is made to resemble the original AES console. Its about 20% smaller than the original. The handheld fits inside the console rather than in the cartridge slot (which is actually just for show) but the innards are nicely done with a soft feel to the surface that the handhelds sits on. I have heard critisism of the console material quality but imo its on par with other consoles such as Megadrive. This connects to your TV via RCA or HDMI and charges the system whilst attached. My only issue with this unit is the menu button, all it does is press down on the handhelds menu button and as such doesnt always register.
The stick: Now this is the bit most people have praised, I have never used an actual AES so I cant compare it. To me whilst it does work great and looks nice it feels hollow. I have read reviews where people have put it through its paces and it has come through them all but in comparison to something like Madcatz' Tatsunoko stick it feels cheap. On the plus side it is PS3 and PC compatible too. With the stick being USB I did try and alternative stick in the console but it did not register. Not bad by any means but tarnished by my owning and being used to a superior product. i will still need to buy another though for 2 player SNK goodness.
Finally the 20 games are preloaded and there is room for additional cards - it is bundled with Ninja Masters, a game I hadnt played before but was very impressed by. They all seemed to run absolutley fine on both handheld and TV, apparently if you run them side by side with a real AES it isnt quite as crisp but its nothing to worry about.

It has just been announced that April will see more gamecards released, these feature 3 games per card. Havent heard of UK prices yet but $25 has been quoted for USA.
All in all I like this machine, if you are a fan of SNK then I can recommend it, of course its better if you can find it for less than the hefty £175 RRP. If you were never struck by NeoGeo in the first place though then this isnt for you and you are probably better off with SNK Arcade Classics on Wii (which is a fantastic disc by the way however the ports are better on the X)
