My wireless is a bit hit an miss and I am wondering if the above is of any use? Has anyone had any prior experience with anything similar and if so is it worthwhile?

I've not tried running network through power cables, but I see a lot of products that offer the service, so presume its ok, I just wonder if having everything on the same wiring ring is needed.

We've installed something called a Ubiquiti Unifi system - it provides a wireless access point using an ethernet cable, you have to mix it and the power using a Power over Ethernet adaptor, and it's brilliant, we've got it installed in our roof space and it's going through two floors with no loss in signal (mind you we've switched it onto high power, but even on normal we had 4/5 bars when connected).

it's probably a bit too, much for a domestic set-up, it's really designed for hotels, but it really is brilliant.

I've not used them myself but i hear good things, i've got an apple base station which had amazing signal all round the house and garden. Although a bit more pricey than a normal wireless access point.

Have you tried changing the channel of your wireless router? You can use free software like INSSIDER that will show you what other wireless networks are on what channel, if you move to a free one you may see a better signal quality and save yourself some clams!

(without going into too much detail, there are 11 wireless channels and things like wireless house phones use them too, if you're on the same channel as a lot of other wireless devices you can have problems)

This is slightly linked to the plugging it in and using the electric circuits - has anyone used one for phones? So I could eg plug one in beside my main phone socket upstairs and use it to plug in beside my Sky box downstairs without having to faff around with wires all around the house?
