ORIGINAL: fiercehairdo This article sums up the problems with stunt casting quite nicely: http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/filmblog/2012/feb/09/hobbit-peter-jackson-billy-connolly How is this stunt casting?! This is the most ridiculous article I have ever read and utterly lazy journalism!! Is the Gaurdian actually trying to convince people that actors the likes of Sylvester McCoy are household names in the UK?! Peter Jackson's casting of the likes of Liv Tyler, Sean Bean, Sir Ian McCellen, Ian Holm and Christoper Lee in the first Lord Of The Rings didn't raise an eyebrow...and they are actual big screen names!! Don't understand what everyone is getting all het up about?! I think the difference is that people like McKellen, Holm, Bean and Lee are skilled actors who are able to transcend their everyday personalities in order to embody new characters, disappearing into them as it were. The worry is that people like Fry and Connolly are much less skilled actors who simply bring the force of their public personas and many viewer can't get past their celebrity persona. This is my concern, it kills the illusion. Fingers crossed they'll pull it off but I think it's fair to flag up the problem. In The Hitchickers Guide to the Galaxy for example I couldn't get past the fact that it was Stephen Fry talking as the voice of the book - since his voice is so distinct and commonly used on adverts, audiobooks and the like. The only one getting "het up" here is you with all the hyperbole: "utterly superb character actors" , "most ridiculous article I have ever read and utterly lazy journalism!!"... chillax dude, it's not a big issue, just an interesting discussion. I'm not het up at all and I am simply trying to carry on the discussion - their have been a few posts about this being an example of Jackson selling out and one post even comparing The Hobbit to the Potter films. I do think it is lazy journalism and the most ridiculous article I have read about a film in a long time. My post was in reference to all of the previous posts and the issues that people are raising...to quote the article: "Jackson could not have given us more familiar small screen faces had he decided to replace Cate Blanchett as Galadriel with the woman who played Ace in Doctor Who and parachuted in Keith Chegwin to portray Gandalf." "The decision to cast a famous face in the role smacks of the kind of thinking that led the makers of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves to send in Sean Connery at the end of that rather glib Hollywood feature" It all just seems a very lazy and pedantic way to criticise the film before it's even released. Personally as a proud Brit I love that their are so many British actors in thie film - the more the better. Seems a very British thing to do to criticise the casting of home grown actors; stinks a little of how the British press generally trashed Christian Bale's performance in The Fighter. Maybe I'm missing the point but I just fail to see how you claim that the casting of the likes Sylvester McCoy, Aiden Turner and Richard Armitage et al is stunt casting. I don't see how the general cinemo-going audience would be able to name drop the likes of them or would actually spend their hard earned cash and watch a film as they are in it. Fyi: think Fry is a fantastic character actor; you only have to look at his work in the likes of Blackadder, Wilde etc to see that. Although agree with you about Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy but I think Fry is the least of the problem with that film *shudders at Mos Def's performance*
