ORIGINAL: Expendable I strill think he is a talent to be reckoned with but has lost a bit since Kill Bill 1. I found Kill Bill Vol 2 and Death Proof enjoyable but average with some moments of the QT genius in them. How, exactly? All he's really shown, thus far, is that he can string together some smart-arse dialogue with homage after homage, with a soundtrack that seems to be composed of someone else's greatest hits. Yes, OK, Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs are good, and Kill Bill was half decent, but really he's never done anything that's made me truly go "wow!" He'll never be in the same league as, say, Spielberg or Scorcese might be. Not even close. Some of the scenes directed in those films require some talent to direct, like the car chases in death proof, the tavern bit in basterds. His charcaters are normally pretty good and he has the skill to get perfomrances out of actors. Thats why I think he is a talent. I remember sneaking into Dogs underage when it was banned from video and it blew me away. I think that's his best work. Its the homage and pop culture references stuff that lets him down, It's been done, copied, re done. He hasn't seemed to have matured much and needs to try something completly new and test himself. It would be interesting to see him working from someone else's script. The scene copying, homaging etc does has got borning. which Is why i think he has gone of the boil and felt let down whith his last few films. I wouldn't call him a great, certainly not even close to Spielberg or Scorsese level, but can be a quality, talented director who makes good, mostly enjoyable films. I can't see him changing his ways now thus we will never know he he could have gone up a level.
