I would agree with what's said about 'his and hers' but I wasn't overly annoyed at it. I loved the seamless ageing of the film, going from the very young to the very old and I'm a sucker for the static serenity of the camera work. I'd even agree with the line by some chump from the Guardian as the film being a "cinematic tone poem"

But yeah it did seem that the intentional absence of the male counterpart only made their presence stronger in this 'men, women & child circle of life' tale, and a bit boring in it's quaint manner. I would of watched it on the telebox if i saw it but may not of bothered going to watch it on the big screen.

But not a bad watch all in all

To me it just seemed like a wasted opportunity. You have all these women and you limit the scope to men. I wouldn't have minded if it had revealed some deeper gender insights, but it didn't really do that, instead coming across as frustratingly old fashioned, even when talking to the younger women.

I actually really found it difficult to balance in my viewed list for the year. If I split it in half, one would be highish the other would be near bottom - I really did get a lot more out of the more elderly segment of the film and I think that came across really well.

Yeah, that is the best bit of the film. When I seen it in the cinema I don't think there was a dry eye during it.

The Shout: Nicely weird, really excellent. Performances are spot on, and the ambiguity afforded to the story, in both term of timeline and character positioning made this a relentless head melt, but an enjoyable one at that.

Someone with the good sense to like Tunes of Glory should also like Laurel and Hardy.

Don't people normally leave it till 3 days before deadline before saying that?

I thought The Shout was fascinating and really enjoyable. Great performances (both Bates and Hurt were fantastic), and the sounds were incredible (nice to see something other than visuals being important). I loved the ambiguity as well; it was done well so not it didn't annoy me (I might seek out the short story too). Also, it's a film I'd never heard of before, so it was great going in with no prior thoughts about it.

Watched Blue Valentine last night. I really enjoyed it. To me it wasn't the most complicated or original romantic drama I've seen, with some story lines being tried and tested countless times. That was a minor detail when compared to the naturalistic direction, charm and acting displayed throughout the film and this really brought it home, as i was really able to identify to some of the situations, feelings and actions of the two characters at certain moments during the show.

* Super-dooper mild aesthetic but awesome spoiler mentioned below*

Both leads were great and it was my first watch of this Ryan Gosling i've heard about, and i enjoyed his performance as well as his bitchin' american eagle sweater. This film did leave me with one disappointment though. The fact that nowhere in Northern Ireland has a hotel with a 'future room' . How awesome would that be.

All in all a good film and i would recommend it to anyone wanting an easy to watch emotional piece of film making, with good acting.

Top 100 for the year or Film Reviews? Are you doing a record thing in the Top 100? There are loads more posters in there this year

I hadn't realised people couldn't delete their own posts in here, though. There are a couple of sub-forums with funny rules, mind, but Mods generally can't see them unless told.

Not much point in deleting now as the rest of the thread wouldn't make much sense, plus how else would we point and laugh at your forum misdirection?

Eureka. Unless it involves Hobbits, there is no need for a film to be this long! Good though.

Very positive. I liked it a lot, just a few times the leisurely pace seemed a bit too leisurely. But it was great.
