I bought my first DVDs (Batman: The Movie and Se7en, Two for Twenty quid) in HMV. True story.

I'm pretty sure HMV could survive a poor economy if their stuff wasn't so over-priced. They have no-one to blame but themselves for massive profit loss.

Just look at companies like Tesco and Asda. Those fuckers are raking it in despite the economic collapse. And you know why? Because their stuff is affordable.

ehhh, I don't think HMV and Asda or Tesco (the latter of whom have wiped off masses in stock value recently) are particularly comparable. Tesco can afford to sell entertainment type stuff at the absolute bottom price, or even loss making, because they make that money back up in the shopping you get at the same time. HMV only do the entertainment stuff so kind of have to stick to making an actual profit. I'm not saying HMV is especially cheap mind - I always felt back in the pre-internet era that Virgin Megastore was better value for money, and these days obviously Amazon, as well as the supermarkets undercut them massively.

The profits were always at a ridiculous level though. I remember being in there back when dvd was just taking off, but video tapes were still selling in a big way. Their world cinema section was always around 14.99 for a tape. I remember seeing The Vanishing in there priced at 17.99. And this was in Cardiff back when Smiths were still selling stuff a few doors down, Virgin was a little bit further along on the same street. Waterstones had a decent world cinema video section, and MVC was a short walk away. I never liked HMV.

The pricing in HMV is all over the place as well. I got some vouchers for Xmas so went there the day after Boxing day. You could buy Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim and Hot Fuzz on bluray as a boxset for 18 or they were available for 19.99 each. Similarly you could buy a HMV exclusive X Men box set featuring all the films including First Class for 25 or you could buy First Class by itself for 20. It's mental. I only go there once a year and that's usually the day after Boxing day to spend the voucher I inevitably get off my sister in law.

That's nothing. When the 2-Disc DVD of Citizen Kane came out it was 39.99 in HMV Dublin. And this was before our government really started to screw us with VAT.

Got it for 5.99 on sendit. Bam!

I've never known a Waterstones sell films! These day though HMV is pretty much the only store there is outside of the supermarkets and they may be cheap but the selection is obviously limited. The advantage of cheap internet prices is obvious, but there's nothing like spending time browsing the shelves (and I can scour the DVD racks for hours) and walking out with bagfuls of stuff.

Back to the list. Completely forgot I'd voted for Hobo with A Shotgun. By far the best thing to come out of the Grindhouse experiment. To Live and Die In LA's pretty damn good too.

There were two Waterstones in Cardiff. One of them used to be something else (blanking on what) and they were bought out, they were the ones who had the world cinema section, and it might have been a holdover from the old store. They were by far the better of the two shops, but it was one of those dumbass decisions where there were two branches within a three minute walking distance of each other and the other was just far more mainstream, so they eventually closed down the cool one.

And yeah, Hobo's great. And a cruel part of me really enjoyed knowing people were going to freak out over the bus scene.

I used to quite like the films on offer in Borders, they always had loads of world cinema titles. And their books about film, much better and a greater variety than Waterstones.

South Park is great fun
Salo I can appreciate in terms of what it's saying and how important it is, but I am never ever ever ever going to watch it again.

For any one that is even remotely interested Naked Blood has a scene where a woman eats her own vaginal lips, then her own nipple and finally her own eyeball. Bon Appetit.

Some great choices in that last update - Fist Of Fury, South Park, To Live And Die and Hobo are all excellent. Salo is good but a very tough watch.

Fist of Fury - Pretty good

I've never seen Soylent Green but one of my favourite Futurama jokes is a reference to it:

Leela: This all must have something to do with the secret ingredient.
Fry: My God, what if the secret ingredient is people?
Leela: No, there's already a soda like that - Soylent Cola.
Fry: Oh. How is it?
Leela: It varies from person to person.

Baghead's great, Dogville's pretty damn good too. Salo is absolute crap no matter what interpretations to try to give it. I need to see Meet The Feebles.

Kids - Grim but very good

Nausicaa... - 2nd tier Ghibli but brilliant nonetheless

South Park... - Never liked the series but thought this was very good.

Fist of Fury - Amazing.

Kiki's Delivery Service - Again, 2nd tier Ghibli but still better than most animated features.

Legend - LOL

I like how everyone is making fun of Matty for voting for Legend. It's a film about unicorns and Tom Cruise, of course someone with the tastes of a 12 year old girl is going to love it.
