Quite a nice bunch of nominations. Strange that neither Melancholia or The Tree Of Life are in there though. Struggling to choose between Drive and The Artist for best film.

I thought The Help was generally derided by UK critics? Perhaps I'm wrong, but I thought Hugo, WNTTAK ans Shame had generally better reviews over here. It sounds to me like the obligatory BAFTA annual sop to American sap. Apart from that, it looks like a justifiable list this year, particularly as it includes Lynne Ramsey and Jim Broadbent... and actually Judi Dench, who was rather splendid as Sybil Thorndike, I thought.

Very little exceptional stuff here, the usual biases remain. It would have been nice to have seen Potter wave goodbye with a best British film nomination alongside Tyrannosaur. My Week with Marilyn surely wasn't as well receieved as Potter critically? Potter has a 96% rating on Rottentomatoes.com. And when you they do finally nominate a British film, they nominate a dud one! Thats why the BAFTAS are so annoying.
Best I'm really pleased with Hugo's 9 nods - hopefully it will win a big handful. I've only seen The Artist from the Best Film list, so I'm backing that one, but hopefully Hugo will get more wins overall. (I still find it strange that The Artist got best sound when only 2 scenes feature sound at all!)

I was under the impression that this was a slient film, so can anybody explain, please?
(No, I have not seen the film myself. It was out of Belgian cinemas before I even knew it'd been released.)

No nomination for Olivia Colman - shocking.

My thoughts exactly. Its all over twitter how much of a cock up Bafta have made yet again in their nominations.

It does have sound, it's dialogue that it's missing.

Where is Rooney Mara for 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo'. The film itself is fairly standard (though miles better than the likes of 'The Iron Lady'), but Rooney Mara's performance is simply breathtaking. We all know that Meryl Streep is bloody amazing but why can't the BAFTAs attempt to recognise some new deserving talent?

Couldn't agree more. The lack of a nomination for her is beyond a disgrace.

The Best British Film category contains only 1 indigenous film - and that's My Week With Marilyn?

I adore the Artist - but how that got nominated for best sound ahead of We Need To Talk About Kevin is utter nonsense.

And with the documentaries, with so many good ones out in 2011, why on earth could they only make room for 3? (1 of which was solid but unremarkable)

Carey Mulligan nominated for Drive rather than Shame? That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever...

And The Iron Lady for original screenplay???

Pleased to see Drive make the shortlist for best film & Gary Oldman get a best actor nod, but aside from that, this is the poorest set of Bafta noms in a long long time.

If Rise of the Planet of the Apes doesn't win the BAFTA for Special Visual Effects then the entire awards are a sad joke.Andy Serkis should have been nominated for an acting award.
