I disliked Stallone's plasticy sparkling ornaments and cat suit, he looked like someone who'd never spent a day on the streets of Mega-City-One: the toughest city on earth. It looked out of kilter with the city depicted. Despite the visual verisimilitude I don't think it was a good representation of what a Judge uniform should look like texturally and in the spirit/function of Ezquerra's original

Here is version of the uniform that could work....

http://img839.imageshack.us/img839/3714/dreddnewuniform1.jpg

You could start the film with Dredd wearing the cape. He removes it when he gets on his lawmaster.

Hidden shoulder padding would broaden the actor's shoulders and the two square type shoulder pads would look compact but not tiny. The right shoulder pad would have the eagle design. The badge and chain would be quite small. There would be a narrow belt around the waist (not visible in that image). Elbow and knee pads added. Gun holster on waist or side of leg.

I think it would work. You can forget the cape. There's something of the 'night' about a cape (shades of Dracula, I guess) and that would suit the dark world of Judge Dredd but it's just an accessory.

The more I think about it the more I think the original look doesn't quite work in a live action film. I think the original Ezquerra design is fantastic, iconic, and perfect for the comic strip version of Dredd but it's a bit too bulky for a live action film? I think the right eagle is a bit too impractical in a live action film. The Judge Minty fan film uniform looks impressive but I've come around to the idea of a few minor changes to the look. I feel the new Dredd 2012 uniform has too much padding but it may look more convincing when a trailer is released and people can see it in motion.

Well i had no doubt that you thought it would work as I guess you mocked it up.

Either way without any footage, nitpicking at costumes seems a bit daft.

At least it doesn't have all this padding:

It looks like he's wearing the kitchen sink!

I quite like the cape and the eagle design on the right shoulder pad. It's neat. I think the main problem with the Urban Dredd uniform... it's too messy. Too much padding!

Either way, whimsical desires of "wouldnt this look good" or "I think this would be better" are fruitless. The filmmakers have already decided these things. The only thing to do is see them in action and decide at that point whether we like them or not.
If the film is good, having, what are in my opinion, minor criticisms of a costume wont matter. Story, writing, scoring and performance are far more important in my opinion.

I think the level of attention to detail by some is a bit unbalanced.

Horrible?

I think it looks professional (not wishing to sound arrogant, honest).

I've never read how to use Photoshop too. Honest. I got a copy off the net (ahem) and just mucked about with it learning the basics. I think that image of Urban on the right looks to a professional standard. I altered the skin tone, the helmet colour, the mouth, the chin, you can't see the joins! Increase the magnification - you should see no bits which look fake or out of place.

Anyway, the image I did of Dredd with the cape and new look was to show you how he could look. It wasn't to do with how good the Photoshop image was, it was to do with the look itself.

Erm I am using the block button rigorously, unfortunately it doesn't block other peoples quotes. And as for bringing an argument over here, you've got to be kidding right? Have you actually read this thread? I was just trying to get a rough number of users seeing as half on this thread seem to know dreddhead by other names if you had been watching. I'm the last person here dragging an argument from another forum and yet seem to be the only one who constantly gets burned for it. I'm not the only one who's made this observation.

That pic makes Dredd look like a stormtrooper with a Darth Vader cloak. Also I really don't think a Judge wearing a cape in Mega-City One would be a very practical thing to do.

As for the real costume, I quite like it. It has the look of some of the earlier JD designs (though you're right in saying Ezquerra's design is impractical in a realistic setting). I don't really like commenting on stuff like this until I've seen it in context: remember all the vitriol poured on the costumes for the X-Men, Batman and Superman films?

I would argue that Dredd is more than a walking chin. We've had a Dredd film featuring a massive chin and it was shit, so it really doesn't matter too much.

The cloaks the Judges wore on the West wall in the 95 intro looked great, but dont belong or would look right inside the cityscape.

Well obviously anywhere near the Cursed Earth, you'd need a rad cloak. Everybody knows that.
