Apparently 2000AD artist Jock has seen Dredd,quote courtesy of a Jock tweet via the 2000AD forums

''Heading to the #DREDD movie panel at LFCC. Loved the movie. A visceral, violent, beautiful looking thriller....''

director of 'the raid' tweeted- “Dredd looks great, not concerned about similarities. That film was in production around the same time we finished The Raid.”

Dredd was in post-production at the time cameras started turning on The Raid .

Dredd panel at the London Film and Comic Convention featured a scene from the film:

SPOILERAfter some generic questions, we moved onto the footage; taking place near the start of the film, the scene in question was filmed as part of last December’s reshoots and serves as an introduction to the character of Judge Dredd and his methods. Having chased down a criminal into a shopping mall, Dredd finds himself in a stand-off with the perp who has taken a woman hostage. If he let’s the hostage go, the sentence is life without the possibility of parole… if he doesn’t comply, then it’s death. Obviously it ends with the latter, as Dredd dispatches a ‘hot shot’ from his lawmaker, the round implanting itself in the perp’s face and frying his head from the inside out. The scene in question wasn’t too shabby, and if it’s any indication of the rest of the film, then Jock’s statement that Dredd is “tough, brutal, violent and exciting” may actually ring true.SPOILER

Sounds like an R-rating to me.

Not to stir up a hornet's nest here but...

Do you think there's going to be a second trailer? Or are they going to do that 'ol US/international trailers that are both kinda the same but each has some different footage (more violence for the Americans, more sex for the Europeans!)

The trailer really didn't feature any violence to speak of, and everyone who's seen the film mentions the levels of brutality. It'd make sense to release a red band trailer at some point, to let action and gore junkies know this is the kind of thing they'll be interested in.

The movie is being screened this weekend. Likely a Red Band will be released then.

Some initial (and extremely positive!) Twitter reaction from the screening...

@colliderfrosty:
DREDD was a super hard R and a lot better than I thought it would be. Again....super hard R. 3D was also great.

@firstshowing:
Dredd 3D - Uh yea, that was awesome. Badass, loved it. Yes, the helmet never comes off. Liked it more than The Raid, a lot more, honestly.

@JHoffman6:
On a pop fascist level DREDD makes STARSHIP TROOPERS look like BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN #SDCC

@alllyourfriends
#Dredd was amazing

@TexasTechWrekem
#Dredd was a mix between Crank and The Raid which means it was awesome! Expect my review tomorrow on @MovieBuzzers

@TorturedXGenius
2 outta 3 of my favorite bloggers i follow liked #DREDD a lot....this is good.

@JHoffman6
Props to Lena Heady: her few center stage moments are tremendous. Great villain. #Dredd #SDCC

@alllyourfriends
Dredd was honestly the best movie I've seen this year.

@Ethan_Anderton
DREDD is brutal, bloody and a bad ass blast of old school action. I was skeptical and ended up being highly entertained.

@filthysize
Just saw DREDD. It's all right. Wafer thin story, but violent as all fuck with a great attitude to it. Less scifi, more cop. #SDCC

@Bilal_Mian
Was Dredd really that good? The buzz is making me go WTF

@alexbigman
#dredd screening at #sdcc was epic.....Best science fiction movie i'd seen in a while...gritty as fuuuark....great dystopian production!!!

@marclevy
DREDD was awesome. So fun! Like taking an action movie, and making artistic and stunning.

@Poni_Boy
First thoughts on DREDD 3D: Little too much campiness but Karl & Lena nailed their hero/villain parts. Fun action & great use of 3D (3.5/5)

@MangoMonkeyBoy
Dredd was excellent! Gritty, violent and beautiful! #sdcc

@benpears
Apparently everyone really liked DREDD. I wasn't as impressed. It has excellent moments, but for an action movie, it was slllllooooowwww.

@cablebfg (Collider writer)
I have to say I'm surprised by the solid reactions to DREDD. The previews aren't doing it any benefits

@ajhan
#Dredd: not too dumb, not too smart, very bloody, fun.

@TheJoBloPodcast
DREDD kicks a lot of ass. Great score. Great kills. Great Lena. It didn't hurt that Karl Urban sat in my row. #overexcited

@filthysize
Karl Urban got the character right, but the movie treats Dredd's fascism as real hope. The comic's always been more satiric than that. #SDCC

@benpears
For all of DREDD's worldbuilding, it sure is small scale. Probably an effect of having a low budget. But it felt almost too contained to me.

@PeedUpProd
I don't know if DREDD is better than THE RAID: REDEMPTION but in about 2 months time we'll see if that comes true. #ComicCon

@TorturedXGenius
ok, now 3 out of 3 of my fave bloggers liked #DREDD .....

@DukeD1989
Initial reactions to Dredd seem to be positive...hell must have just gotten much colder.

@Reelnerdchick
Finally finished wih #Dredd - great movie lots of fun; met Karl Urban - what a nice guy!

And finally a word from Empire magazine...

@empiremagazine
Dredd Goodd. Longer reaction to come soon, followed by the full Empire review. We're that drokking efficient.

The focus on The Raid seems really out of place for a supposedly professional magazine review. As if the setting has any bearing on the film itself, and as if this was ever going to compare to a martial arts film. Urban was never going to be bad in the role but it's nice to see some confirmation. 3/5 is probably about right, but hopefully as a fan of the material I can push that to 4/5.

I get that The Raid is still fresh in the memory but it does seem like the film may have got an extra star if not for it, which is slightly disapointing as the premise has been used before, judge the film on its own merits. It's still a positive review which is great especially considering the troubles the film has had in production.

Like the majority of the cinema going public I haven't seen The Raid and I doubt that film will have any bearing on Dredds commercial success. TBH I find chop-socky flicks to be marmite at the best of times, I had a phase with them when I was 16 but I would imagine if Dredd is a success that will be the one that stays with people, we'll see.

The only negative point the review makes is the comparison with The Raid.

So what I'd take from that is: if you haven't seen The Raid, you won't have any problem enjoying Dredd- which I'd expect would apply to most film-goers.
