you can certainly see The Raid being raided here I think. But maybe no more so than how the likes of Undersiege, Passenger 57, and Speed et al took their cue from Die Hard.

But then, isn't The Raid modelled on Die Hard? McClane working his way through a skyscraper/tower block to beat the big boss at the end?

Dredd looks alright. It doesn;t look a whole lot removed from Stallones effort, perhaps not as chinzty and bright and with some added dirt and grit. Like others I am excited about Garlands involvement, but will it be enough?

The script for Dredd was freely available online for the last couple of years. This breathless action nerd claims to have attended a screening, and is broadly positive about the film. I have no idea whether he's for real.

"This DREDD movie is all action all the time. This thing is straight out Rated R and I loved it. I loved every *beep* bullet of it. This is an awesome action film. The 3D made it better as it wasnt the cheesy kind that throws *beep* at the audience. There was a lot of depth. The drug in the film also helped the 3D and the action scenes.

The drug these people take makes everything go really slow so the "slow-mo" scenes of people getting *beep* up were great. The kills were very graphic ... The drug lord is played by Lena Headey (300, Sarah Connor) and she is pretty brutal. Very violent and hands on.

The CG, the action, and the 3D were all really good in this film. We need to see more films like this ... Overall I'd recommend you see this in September"

Yeah, not sure I am buying that. Surprised by the District 9 visual cues.

It's Dredd and it's Garland; so you know there's going to be more to it than a parade of genre cliches and worn out action tropes, but using those familiar elements in the trailer to tell a certain audience that this features the kind of stuff they enjoy seems like exactly the kind of thing a trailer's supposed to do.

I'm a friend of Alex...

Yeah, okay; I'll bite. Is that a euphemism along the same lines as being 'a friend of Dorothy', or are you X-box buddies with the author of The Tesseract?

Now that would be telling.

(No, it's a euphemism. I thought we were close, but he never writes, he never calls. Well, there was that nasty letter I got from his lawyer. Something to do with a "restraining order" - whatever that is!)

As Mr Garland shares his surname with Judy , probably the former . Chris is more of a casual acquaintance of Dorothy.. ( Hey Chrissie boy... Guess Who ? )

Really? I think it's a good visual shorthand for what life's like at street level.

Having those massive futuristic blocks erupting through the filth and misery of those favelas sets up the contrasts of MC1. It echoes the visual contrast between the teeming mass of downtrodden humanity and the sci-fi sheen of the Judges- which initially had me worried Dredd & Co would look out of place, but which now seems to make perfect sense.

Applying the same real world textures of the concrete slums to the outlandish Judges' uniforms and the towering blocks means everything holds together perfectly, and that this film has found the cohesive vision of Dredd's world that the Stallone film- with its Bladerunner streets, Flash Gordon fashions and comic book skyline- never quite managed.

That shot of the bikes speeding toward Peach Trees, underneath those massive elevated sections of motorway, and the establishing shot of hundreds of those huge blocks looking like sea forts rising from an urban ocean, were the keys that helped me understand the visual grammar of this film.

Apparently, Dredd (2012)'s been rated 12A in the UK.

After the US R-rating, I was expecting a 15 at the least, domestically. Good news financially, but I'm wondering how they managed this- the few people who have seen this film have all made special mention of the level of violence on display.

The TRAILER is rated 12A, not the FILM.

There is no way DREDD is getting a 12A unless it gets butchered, there are skinnings in this film.

Cheers for putting me right, Soap. Skinnings?!

Skinnings? Wow. Im so glad they've gone down this route, it kills all notions of Dredd as a 'childish comic character' stone dead. And then skins them.

I'm going to go all Negative Nancy but anyway:

-Ok, so the script has been around longer than The Raid (It's hardly an earth shatteringly original idea anyway..) but the comparisons are just too similar. Showing up in a tower block with a voice over some form of intercom telling all inhabitants to kill the invading officers?  The Raid was unfortunately released first and also unfortunately bloody good: so Dredd has a very steep hill to climb.

-Karl Urban: with his stressed-to-the-point-of-breaking American drawl, Batmanesque growl and uber-frowning mouth he reeks of a Cardboard cut-out hero that will only annoy the viewers that don't instantly forget him.

On the plus side I generally quite like Urban (I do, really ), love the idea of a proper R-Rated violent action film and ultimately realise that even if all the bad things I predict do come true...it will still be a better film than the Stallone joke.

The only great thing about Judge Dredd ('95) was the Alan Silvestri score which is still awesome to listen to.

Like you say, it's a well established basic set-up for a number of very successful films. Details like the tannoy don't strike me as the kind of thing that'll jump out at, or overly concern a mainstream audience.

He's all of those things, which is why the character is so interesting, and has managed to survive unchanged for so long in a comic industry which is heading towards a culture of almost yearly 'reboots' of characters and titles.

Dredd's the same badass heroic total bastard he's always been.

If this is a hit, I'm still hoping that someone has the balls to make a Strontium Dog movie.

or Rogue Trooper
or

Strontium Dog? A futuristic spaghetti western? I'd buy that for a dollar!

Rogue Trooper would make a great film. Was there not talk of a movie before the first Dredd flick even? (I almost typed Rouge Trooper there which would be a different proposition entirely - "Hell-o, Gunnar!")

Flesh - The Movie? Cowboys V Dinosaurs? I'm amazed someone hasn't made this one already!

Yeah, be nice if Dredd spawned a 2000AD "movie universe." But first things first. Dredd has to be a hit. Being good too would be a bonus.

Comic genius (and recently announced OBE) Grant Morrison's reportedly working on a Rogue Trooper treatment for Sam Worthington, and a film called Aliens vs Dinosaurs for Barry Sonnenfeld.

You'd think they'd have learned their lesson after Cowboys and Aliens.

Sam Worthington needs to stay the fuck away from Rogue.Jeremy Renner would be a better choice,he has weird eyes that would look cool with white lenses.

Any of you Southerners going to see Urban and the Dredd panel at London comic con thingy?
