One thing in this trailor I saw which annoys the hell out of me is at some point Dredd's rookie partner tools up and says 'Let's finish this'. That is such a terrible hollywood staple piece of dialogue and it is shit. Hopefully the movie will overcome this lameness and rock. But it will never beat Sly Stallone's effort.

In being its not going to be (as) sh*t.

But yeah I sort of agree about that certain quote, but if it fits the film then it may pull it off.
Cliche's action talk/lines can work if they are done in a knowing comical taste (tongue in cheek).

It's just that specific piece of dialogue. It crops up everywhere and I hate it at this point.

The film's a violent action movie, and the trailer looks to me as if it's been tooled (interesting choice of words) to the kind of people who buy all those films that Jet Li, Steve Segal and folk from WWE churn out specifically for the 3 DVDs for £10 section in Asda- I imagine that's where Dredd will make a fair proportion of its money.

Dumb lines like the one you mentioned appeal to certain viewers ironically; and to other viewers they sound as powerful, eloquent and quotable as Shakespear. For all the insufferably dumb US fanboy critiques I've been subjected to on other forums over the last few days- if I read the words this is the same as The Raid one more time I'll fucking scream- not one of them has mentioned that line as standing out as particularly cheesey.

It's Dredd and it's Garland; so you know there's going to be more to it than a parade of genre cliches and worn out action tropes, but using those familiar elements in the trailer to tell a certain audience that this features the kind of stuff they enjoy seems like exactly the kind of thing a trailer's supposed to do.

And at least it's not I knew you'd say that!

I guess " I am the law" is a popular line from the comics? I groaned when he said that.

At least he whispered/snarled it in best "Do ya feel lucky, punk?" style. Certainly an improvement on "I never broke duh luh - I AM DUH LUH!"

Ok I'm reading on some of the other forums that this trailer contains a massive spoiler at the end when Dredd throws the baddie out the window. Anybody else get a better look to confirm if this is the case?

EDIT: And lol just spotted Dreddhead123 on another board.

Yeah, the delivery was alright but I heard "I AM THLAWW" instantly echo afterwards. I think the trailer looked alright, I liked the slow motion stuff and bad effects sometimes work in the right sort of films. There was a small teeny clip posted a while ago of Dredd looking someone in the face then *spoiler* someone shooting him in the head from the side * end* I think i was sold on that bit (although i dont think ill see this in cinema).

Well it looks a lot better than I was expecting frankly; the trailer itself doesn't do a great job of selling the film as anything more than an average quippy sci-fi action piece but really I get the feeling that's all the film would have turned out to be anyway.

Still got some minor bugbears (the Lawmasters still look like cheap shit - as do all the vehicles actually) but I was pleased to see that the story behind setting the action within a single block is fairly intriguing and that MC1 is more sci-fi in look and scope than the set pics had led us to believe. It's not as sci-fi as the Stallone film's MC1 but thankfully more than the Mad Max-ish post apocalypse that the set pics had indicated. As expected the lengthy post production/effects period seems to be featuring some augmentation of the city.

Slightly concerned about Urban here though; his Dredd just seems to be coming across as someone acting like a hard nut whereas the comics' Dredd (to me) just...is one. He doesn't need to play it up at all and I think Urban's direction here has been to play him like a "badass" rather than just a cool, calculating, efficient, brutal machine of a man. Personally I was thinking Urban would play him similarly to his role in The Bourne Supremacy (but without the weariness - Dredd lives for his role in the system). Again the trailer didn't help by having some cheesy quips peppered throughout from Dredd. Considering it's an Alex Garland script I'm a bit worried that he seems to only talk in cliches.

Anyway, overall the film is looking solid but unremarkable and frankly given the creative team that's about all I was expecting anyway. Will be interested to see what future trailers and spots they put up later because they need to work harder than this one to really sell the film.

800,000 hits on Youtube in just a few days suggests that trailer's doing the job it was designed to do.

Regular folks don't seem to mind (or be aware of) genre cliches, and the combination of stock one-liners with nasty violence is like a rallying call to the very loyal and always hungry action film demographic.

I hope the film's more than that too, though.

I'm surprised Lionsgate haven't filed a lawsuit against The Raid's producers given the shocking similarities in the script. Anyone else think they just blatantly stole the idea?

Wouldn't be Lionsgate suing, they're only the US distributor, it'd be DNA. It'd be hard to prove. I suspect it is really a coincidence as it'd be a fairly risky venture ripping a script off so close to production and release. They tried their best to rush the Raid out in post-production when they found out it had the same plot.

Or Die Hard could sue the lot of 'em!

How about La Horde? That's a police unit attack on a block with a drug dealer as well. Predates both

La Horde was very dull, though. And it had 'zombies' in it. And it was French. You might as well mention REC 1 and 2.

I think everyone just keeps making the same film AGAIN and AGAIN, until someone finally gets it right. Took Clint at least three attemptsat the same story to get to Unforgiven.

I was sticking to the attack on a block owned by drug dealers. And La Horde - not just dull, IMO, but also very bad.

Although not a police raid on drug owned block one, there have been some fun and decent mindless French action movies over the last few years. The Nest is perfectly decent, e.g. And District 13 is good fun.

As Mr Garland shares his surname with Judy , probably the former . Chris is more of a casual acquaintance of Dorothy.. ( Hey Chrissie boy... Guess Who ? )

you can certainly see The Raid being raided here I think. But maybe no more so than how the likes of Undersiege, Passenger 57, and Speed et al took their cue from Die Hard.

But then, isn't The Raid modelled on Die Hard? McClane working his way through a skyscraper/tower block to beat the big boss at the end?

Dredd looks alright. It doesn;t look a whole lot removed from Stallones effort, perhaps not as chinzty and bright and with some added dirt and grit. Like others I am excited about Garlands involvement, but will it be enough?
