Most of the recent high profile 3D flops have been a load of wank. The demise of 3D seems like a convenient excuse to avoid explaining why studios keep spending millions making films no-one wants to see.

Everyone I know who hates the steroscopic process still ponies up the extra four or five quid to see films that are only showing in Threedy, so I doubt that DNA's decision to shoot Dredd (2012) using that process has limited the film's appeal in any significant way. I don't think filming Dredd (2012) in 3D was anything other than a business decision, and the higher admission price at the door for 3D films equals more revenue.

I understand the reasons for making it in 3D at the time; I just doubt the assumption that it brings in more revenue these days as it's just as likely to turn people off. And it seems the average punter doesn't make a distinction between "made in 3D" and "changed to 3D".

Hugo was, by all accounts, incredibly well-received and had 11 Oscar nominations. And it was a flop at the box office. Truth is there have been more 3D failures in the last year than successes, regardless of the films quality, and all signs point to a fading interest in 3D and people refusing to pay the extra amount (in fact, I'm sure I read somewhere that with films in both formats, the 2D version is generally the preferred option now).

I just hope they don't push the whole 3D thing too much while advertising the film as I feel it's more of a negative now than it was two years ago. Most of the people I know will actively not go to a film if the only option is 3D (I didn't go see both Captain America and Hugo for this reason myself).

I'd heard that statstic too, furrybastard, but I've more or less stopped paying attention to any new information regarding 3D thanks to Mark Kermode's interminable fucking propoganda on the subject.

Anecdotal, I know, but most people I've asked about 3D say they're not fussed either way. I've no idea if DNA/Lionsgate/Entertainment intend to offer audiences a choice of 3D or 2D.

He probably got that statistic from the same place as me. I first saw it from a Roger Ebert tweet (Ebert's a good source of industry info on twitter actually)... Hollywood Reporter: (CLICK)

As for anecdotal most people I know tend to choose 2D cos' it costs less and/or they hate 3D. I know some cinema staff too and they say people seem to prefer 2D now, with some even giving out if it's not an option and choosing something else to see (again, that's obviously purely anecdotal and only really representative of one cinema!)

I'm sure Lionsgate will be offering both. I hope so anyway. I think going with that awful DR3DD thing is a terrbile idea

EDIT : Another article from HR, this time an interview with Jeffrey Katzenberg about "the decline of 3D profitability": CLICK

So Harry Potter 7, Green Lantern, Pirates 4, Thor, Kung Fu Panda 2 are mentioned between both articles...

So, if they want to make more money, 3D's still a reasonable bet. Thanks for the links, furrybastard.

The chances of Dredd (2012) making enough money to warrant a sequel are pretty slim. If making a marginally greater return is the deciding factor in greenlighting Dredd (2014) and Dredd (2016), then charging extra for the funny glasses might make the difference.

I know what you mean, though. Only DNA will know if their 2010 profit projections still hold up, given the undoubted indifference to 3D. Like I say, I couldn't give a toss about Threedy.

Not sure if that's true, it only cost $35 million. If it makes $80-100 million -still less than what the Stallone film made- there'll definitely be a sequel.

I thought the budget was $80m?

I thought the budget was $45 million. My understanding was that 2.5 times budget was the point where sequels were an option.

Would that no' just be the shooting cost though, Soap? Doesn't marketing come out of that $45 million pot too?

Finally some news, Dredd gets an R-rating which would suggest the film is finished then?

While checking for information on the new Dredd film I discovered that the official 2000ad site is either broken or telling us something important is happening (or about to happen).

Anyone here know what the fuck THIS (click link) is about?

Looks promising
The one stand-out thing is the music, considering 2000AD dont have any animes or other related Dredd works in other mediums I'll like to think this is a taster of what the in-film music will be like or trailer.

Or of course it could be a release of a new comic/character line

I've been watching and listening to this for about an hour- patiently waiting for something to happen- and that music is really starting to do my tits in. I went off to make a cuppa and I swear I could still hear it playing in my ears. If that's the film music, it'll be a real scoop.

Launching a new character's a good guess, but the tone's so dramatic; I can't see them making this kind of fuss over something unless it was shit your pants important.

What the fuck is happening? http://www.2000adonline.com/

Unless they are launching a comic to coincide with the movie?

I remember reading that a US publisher is doing an American Dredd comic (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/comics/news/a376751/judge-dredd-artists-confirmed-by-idw-publishing.html), but that's been announced as arriving in "The Fall".

Bit early to go so apeshit (http://www.2000adonline.com/) and mess about with the official site for something by another publisher.

It's either something to do with the film, or something very big in the comic.

Well, whatever we're getting our collective knickers in a twist about, it definitely involves Dredd's home town. Those buildings underneath the 'THEY ARE HERE' text are definitely from Megacity One and they look FUCKED.

The new film shows MC1 as a violent, decaying city (LINK), but the skyline in that teaser looks like a pool party at Michael Barrymore's place.

Mental! The Dark Judges fuckin' rule.

I haven't picked up an issue of 2000ad for years, but if those evil bastards are back I'm going to have to see what Wagner's got planned.

Last time they showed up they turned Megacity 1 into one massive graveyard- I can't wait to see how they top THAT.

Do you think this has got anything to do with the film, Joe? Like I said earlier, that devastated skyline makes MC1 look much more like the new Dredd film than Stallone's shiny buildings and flying cars version.

I meant the whole Laying Waste To The City thing.

If the Dark Judges buttfuck the city like they did in Necropolis , it's gonna look much more like the city we've seen in set pix from Dredd.
