Howdy y'all. Long time lurker, first time poster. Creaming with anticipation about Dredd 2012. And fascinated by all the theorising and conjecture flying about. Just please god dont let it be shit. We would never hear the end of it from HIM.

Hello, Grimmy. A lot of people would be perversely pleased to hear from HIM again, but he seems to keep getting bounced- so no more Photoshop fun for a while. I think there could be a book in that boy for some enterprising hack.

I think it's unlikely Dredd (2012)'s going to be shite.

I don't mind if this film's so violent it gets a rating that means it doesn't make a huge profit, I don't mind if this film deviates from the source material, but I'd be heartbroken if it's just ... alright- and ends up as so much undifferentiated cinematic landfill.

I'd be happy if it manages to avoid becoming lost in this year's deluge of comic adaptations.

HIM will no longer be frequenting these parts. Unless you are HIM?

Well done, Spaldron. Good to see where your real interest in this thread lies, Buddy.

He has his own google forum (alt.comics 2000ad) where you can castigate him endlessly, cruelly and without the interference of moderators- if that's all you want. How different people deal with his undoubtedly annoying antics tells you more about them than they perhaps intend to reveal.

More pics, video and info about the film have surfaced in the last few days than we've seen in the last year- and that's what you want to talk about.

Sorry, Grimmy, that was just plain inhospitable.

Grimmy's a regular poster to a board where Our Little Friend is most definitely not welcome, so Spaldron can abandon any plans to tie him up, take a blood sample and see how it reacts to the application of a blowtorch.

Back on topic, Grimster, I agree with you that both City of the Damned and Judge Death- stories that play up the supernatural/fantastic element of the comics- would be a diversion from the substance of what Judge Dredd is really about.

The new film is at least showing Dredd going about his job (as opposed to Stallone's Borgen-like focus on events among the ruling elite), but DNA seem to be presenting Dredd and the Justice System as necessary evils to contain the inveterate criminality of the citizenry.

That's certainly the rationale adopted by the Judges to justify their autocratic, coersive rule, but do you think the film's going to find time to question that version of events in-between shots of perps' heads exploding like melons?

Just to be clear, I fuckin' love perps' heads exploding like melons.

Scojonoia is understandable on Dredd Related forums. Totally understand Spaldrons caution. Back to the point tho- As i said on the 2000ad board (which i gather you must have read), Dredd without justification is no more than a fascist bully boy and ive never felt comfortable with or even very interested in that idea. He has become a neccesary evil in a fictional society that is forever on the brink of collapse. Ive always felt that he was intended as a satire on, and warning about, our own society. The movie really has to explore this on SOME level at least, or i fear the general uninitiated film veiwer will wonder why the hell we cheer this bastard on? Its important to show how the city and its inhabitants justify the existance of the judges. Or maybe more interestingly still- leave that question open for the veiwer to decide as Mr Wagner has done so well and so often. Better the devil you know?

I always preferred Can't Get You Out Of My Head, Grimmy. And wasn't Better The Devil You Know an Ennis story and plot decision, following on from Wagner's own decision to quit the weekly Dredd gig? Douglas Wolk's fantastic Dredd blog, Dredd Reckoning (i), certainly seems to indicate so, though I'd always assumed Wagner had sketched out some kind of plot outline for Ennis to follow.

Do the actions of the megacitizens, or any population, ever really legitimate fascism?

The Judges have such wonderful toys at their disposal it's always difficult to believe they're really so hard-pressed to keep a lid on rampant lawlessness- if all else fails they can just pour on the riot foam, after all. Even stories like The Pit and the brilliant Graveyard Shift- which I think introduced the regulation ten minutes on the sleep machine for the over-worked Judges- never leave you in much doubt about who's going to come out on top.

The new film's stripped much of the Judges' technological paraphenalia away, so the criminal gangs Dredd and Anderson are squaring off against will present a more credible threat, but I'd be disappointed if the groundwork isn't set for possible sequels to interrogate the logic behind the whole system.

Like the old ultra-violence and Dod Mantle's beautiful cinematography, that would really set this film apart from all the hobbits, spiders and tired old action veterans that'll be crowding out the multiplexes in September.

Kylie.. mmm. Its important to remember that Dredds brand of political rule needs to be viewed in context, the atom war is the biggest factor that distinguishes megacity1 from our society, i dont see it as a literal mirror. I would never dream of thinking that fascism can be justified in reality. (Im an old lefty to be honest). But it makes sense in terms of the story that the judges consider themselves the good guys, we have to make up our own minds, i love that ambiguity. The stripped down look works for me too, i dont know much about film making but apparently a lot of Dredd2012 posters do, thier general enthusiasm plus the latest pics have given me hope for a cool and original look.

Yeah, Grimmy; I suppose I'm talking more about the comics (above) than the new film. I'm really more interested in how this film can help the comics financially than how the story plays out- what narrative could they construct that Wagner hasn't already done?

I completely understand why DNA have simplified everything from production design to the whole rationale behind the Judge system. The comics are always going to be able to go into more depth and treat the larger themes in a more nuanced way than a two hour film.

I hope making Dredd (2012) a violent action film for grown-ups will distinguish it from the veritable deluge of tame, kiddie-friendly, lycra-clad heroes who beat shoplifters up because they have daddy issues. Like Wagner says, everyone loves a bastard.

The Beeny Combo comes with Medium Fries and a drink of your choice doesn't it?

The original America story is the absolute pinnacle of Wagner's Dredd As Unqualified Bastard period, isn't it? I think Wagner felt he'd gone as far in that direction as he could, though; because the second and third parts of America definitely belong to the long cycle of Dredd Gradually Realising What A Bastard He Is stories that've accounted for the last fifteen years (plus) of the strip.

I don't think there'll be much opportunity to explore such subtle gradations of character in the new film(s)- violent action movies aren't known for their subtelty and nuance- so it'd be good to see Dredd as Wagner's absolute cunt, who's prepared to do whatever the situation requires, no matter how many innocent people are caught in the crossfire.

Well there one he choose his family before the Law, as Vienna was caught in the Total War bombing of Sector 2, Dredd acted to save her first instead of being impartial. That was the one of greatest moments of Judge Dredd stories I start to hooked into Judge Dredd than before!

Has it been confirmed if this is filmed in 3D, had 3D treatment afterwards or option C - released in a format that people actually like (2D)?

If Dredd is a high-octane,full-out action blood bath of a movie then it might (might) just work in 3D.

I will Still see it in 2D though,3D gives me a headache

The 3D could work if its done well (i,e; Hugo) otherwise 2D will be the one. Only problem is most multiplexes may only screen the 3D version giving you no choice in the matter.

It'll be the i-max in Manchester for me, saw Watchmen there a few years back and my eyes were on stalks. Never seen a new style 3d film before tho, very curious as to how it will come across.

If they're showing it in IMAX digital then that's the one I'll be checking out.

Posters on other boards seem convinced that US distributors Lionsgate will fail this film in the same way they've (apparently) ballsed-up the releases of Conan and Punisher.

Are Lionsgate really that shit and is how Dredd (2012) performs at the US box office as important to the decision on whether it gets a sequel as was the case for those films?

Most of Dredd's finance comes from The Rest Of The World (i), so as long as it makes enough profit worldwide things should be good, right?

(i) India, as far as I can tell.
