quote:
Grimmy: "He has become a neccesary evil in a fictional society that is forever on the brink of collapse. Ive always felt that he was intended as a satire on, and warning about, our own society. The movie really has to explore this on SOME level at least, or i fear the general uninitiated film veiwer will wonder why the hell we cheer this bastard on? Its important to show how the city and its inhabitants justify the existance of the judges" I always preferred Can't Get You Out Of My Head, Grimmy. And wasn't Better The Devil You Know an Ennis story and plot decision, following on from Wagner's own decision to quit the weekly Dredd gig? Douglas Wolk's fantastic Dredd blog, Dredd Reckoning (i), certainly seems to indicate so, though I'd always assumed Wagner had sketched out some kind of plot outline for Ennis to follow. Do the actions of the megacitizens, or any population, ever really legitimate fascism? The Judges have such wonderful toys at their disposal it's always difficult to believe they're really so hard-pressed to keep a lid on rampant lawlessness- if all else fails they can just pour on the riot foam, after all. Even stories like The Pit and the brilliant Graveyard Shift- which I think introduced the regulation ten minutes on the sleep machine for the over-worked Judges- never leave you in much doubt about who's going to come out on top. The new film's stripped much of the Judges' technological paraphenalia away, so the criminal gangs Dredd and Anderson are squaring off against will present a more credible threat, but I'd be disappointed if the groundwork isn't set for possible sequels to interrogate the logic behind the whole system. Like the old ultra-violence and Dod Mantle's beautiful cinematography, that would really set this film apart from all the hobbits, spiders and tired old action veterans that'll be crowding out the multiplexes in September.
