The last broardcast came out round about Blair witch Project.

It came out a full year before Blair Witch even started being filmed, if memory serves, although Blair Witch was developed in the early 90s. So those two are really coincidental and don't fall into this category.

You can see a good list of these here:

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DuelingMovies

Some of them are very tentative links, but there are quite a few good ones - certainly more than I remember. Try not to read too many though, as TV Tropes will drain away your life.

Some of the ones they list are a bit daft though. Green Lantern and Green Hornet? The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth?!?

Darth, sorry to be so pedantic here... but THE DARK CRYSTAL was released in 1982 and LABYRINTH in 1986. The connection of course, is that they were both Jim Henson films.

Darth's simply saying that some of the things on that list are daft, date wise or other.

Besides, Labyrinth and Dark Crystal identical or even sharing a remotely similar theme? That's a bit like comparing Armageddon and Die Hard because they both have Bruce Willis.

YES!!! I was thinking the same thing the other day; I would say this would easily be included.

Also, how's about - Se7en and .....erm, Copycat, from 1995.

Apparently, prior to making BWP, the makers saw a screening of TLB and personally congratulated the makers of it. And whether or not it is 'coincidence' that there are similarities, when picking up a copy of TLB to review, I certainly saw it came with a press release stating the previous point about the BWP makers, prior to making BWP, seeing TLB and including a list of specific key points of similarity. Whatever the shakedown of this situation was, the DVD cover certainly includes the words 'May have influenced The Blair Witch Project. It certainly preceded it

As for the general question I suggest

1) Someone pitches an idea to a few places, gets turned down a lot until the green light is gotten eventually

2) Someone who previously turned it down hears someone else picked it up and concludes maybe its not such a bad idea after all and rushes into production with a film of a similar nature,

3) It stops at two, generally because in the marketplace two's company and three's a crowd, and once word gets around of two similar features anybody considering a similar film to the pitch they turned down )after hearing somebody else thinks it is a good enough proposition) now considers the jig is up.

Two Hercules movies coming in 2014. One by Renny Harlin, one by Brett Ratner. Apparently both will scale down the more fantastical elements and creatures. Wow, great way to set them apart then

What about Knowing and 2012?
Both have a mass apolcalyptic theme that began with a prediction and ended in total world destruction with some people surviving. The only difference is Aliens saved the chosen people in Knowing (I hate that ending).

How the hell do you scale down the fantastical elements of a Greek myth? Not only that, a demi-God who fought giant monsters, created the rock of gibraltar, among other things. There's nothing in that story that isn't fantastical, except for maybe the fact he got married.

Both of them released ( at least here in the UK ) within six months of each other.

Just remembered eXistenZ and The Matrix, same year. I mean is Hollywood just sharing scripts or something?

Pretty sure eXistenZ is not a Hollywood film, up until the last few films most of Cronenberg's output have been Candian funded. Also don't see those two films as being that alike.

The thing about the Romance in the Stone/Indy link is that Romance I think is meant to be like pardy of that kind of swushbuckling, adventure film.
