Ok first and foremost if it were not for Michael Fassbender's amazing performance or Carey Mulligan this film would not hold it's interest in you for over 2 hours. At times it felt dated, and many scenes for me did not ring true. Without revealing to many spoliers his decent into male angst and sex addiction / self destruction felt exploitative, pretentious and over-cooked, this due to the directors need to stay that little bit TOO LONG in those countless sex scenes. Ok we get the message; HE LIKES SEX ALLOT!!!!

All the subtleness and reality just ebbs through Fassbender; he litlerally holds this film together with Carey Mulligan as his over dependant sister; pushing him that closer and closer over the edge. There are some poigniant scenes as he goes about his everyday life; connecting with others then dis-connecting on purpose, but we have all been here before in other modern male alienation dramas.

Ok, only worth watching for Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan and that's it really!

So it is more character driven than story, whats wrong with that? Besides the excellent lead performances it is all about the mood and atmosphere, and the portrait of New York as lonely, dark brooding city is superbly jotxaposed with the drama of the characters. The fact little happens at times is part of the point, Fassbender's character is stuck, unable to devolp.

The bit when he has a chance to have a proper realtionship, is very touching as he has too much respect for the girl to just sleep with her, but on the other hand doesn't have the guts to tell her how he feels.

Think this will go down as one of the great films of this decade.

Ok, I grant you Fassbender was amazing in a role which expects more than most make leads. but what the hell was the whole thing about and why the painfully slow rendition of New York New York? A few visuals reminded you that this was "art", but mostly this was just very soft and unnecessary porn about a man who basically had no life beyond sex. And?????? Truly dreadful - I watched in a cinema with 6 others, two of whom left half way through. I wish I had as well - this was so boring and prententious.
