 Looks like I was beaten to the punch this year!

Just a quick run through of the rules in case you're not sure....

For every new film you see that is officially released in 2012 (according to where you live), the idea is to build an ongoing list of the things you end up seeing and rank your order of preference until the conclusion of the year. For every new film watched, simply post the film's title, where it roughly enters your list and a review regarding your thoughts about the corresponding film - which can be anything from a sentence, an essay, a mark out of 10 or all three in some way; it's entirely up to you.

In order to avoid a number of repeated posts, either post your reviews and lists in the same edited post throughout the year or wait until you've seen around five new things before adding things to your list – something which I've been doing the past few years. Feel free to use as little or as many posts as you like - whatever works best for you.

If you want to keep your ongoing list restricted to a top 10 / top 20 / top 50 or as I tend to do things, have it in its entirety as it grows throughout the year, again, that is your call.

The purpose of the thread is to get and help give a good comprehension of the films released in 2012 and to have the opportunity to praise / vilify certain commercial / independent releases that have left an impression on us as they happen.

I still have a handful of things from 2011 before I move onto 2012, but the likely first new entries will arrive in the form of Shame & the Iron Lady.

Happy New Year everyone and I look forward to seeing everyone's ongoing lists of favourites / pet hates from 2012.

Odd first week of new releases in London as whilst the rest of the UK gets a wide release for the likes of The Artist and The Lady which came out in London at the end of last year, there is a rather limited slate of new releases.

Took in Goon (5/10) today as I wasn't in the mood for a Thatcher biopic.  It's certainly something of an oddity - co-written by Baruchel and Seth Rogan's usual writing partner Evan Goldberg about ice hockey players brought into the game solely to fight.  Given its pedigree, you won't be surprised to learn that it falls back on the usual slacker-stoners with father issues that recur in Goldberg related scripts. 

Seann William Scott is an affable lead that I have a lot of time for and Liev Schreiber's Canadian accent was quite funny and yet for a comedy there were very few laugh-out loud moments.  In fact, in a screen which was about half full, I don't think I heard anyone else laugh at all for 85 minutes.  Hardly a promising statistic!

It's Number 1 for now but it won't stay there long (if it does, it doesn't bode well for 2012) and I suspect this film will bomb in the UK as we have never as a country particularly "got" ice hockey and the concept of players brought in solely to fight doesn't compute the football/rugby/cricket crowds.

Have to be honest and say I might give the Goon a look based on Kermode and Peter Brawshaw's promising reviews this week, the trailer does make it look pitiful, and just what you might expect from this sort of thing, but I will go in with an open mind none the less.

THE IRON LADY

Thatcher may have been a decisive PM, but the one thing everyone can agree on is that this is one mediocre film. Perhaps that's to be expected from the director of Mamma Mia, but that doesn't make the flaws of The Iron Lady any less excusable. Rather than attempt to portray the reason she earned that nickname in the first place, it reduces the political insight to a series of clichéd & montage-heavy flashbacks that do nothing more than skim through the key moments of her premiership. What we get instead essentially is a film about an elderly woman struggling to deal both with the loss of her husband and the dementia old age can bring. Obviously this is in place to bring both humanity to an individual many regard as a monster and give the Iron Lady a commercially viable angle. Sadly though it also makes things far less interesting and much more worthless. Streep however is brilliant.

GOON

Perhaps I'm not the target audience for this; but I struggled to find anything funny & engaging about a ice hockey-based "comedy" with constant dick jokes & excessive use of the F word - the occasional crack of a smile was the absolute very best I could muster. Things improved any time Shaun William Scott shared a scene with either Alison Pill & Liev Scheiber, but more often than not I was irritated rather than entertained. Fine within its field I guess but absolutely not for me. Jay Baruchel's character is also really, REALLY annoying!

 Had a double-helping at my local Wolrd of Cine last night....

WAR HORSE

Takes forever to get going & predominantly feels like a drag until the stuff in the trenches occur - resulting in one excellent & poignant scene that you'll be in no doubt what it is when you see it.

Good performances (the excellent Niels Arestrup the stand out), some traditional well-executed Spielberg set-pieces & a couple of inspired moments. Overall pretty decent - but that's largely thanks to the last 40 minutes or so.

SHAME

Excellent & well-measured piece about the debilitating nature of addiction & the personal denial & shame (see what I did there? ) that follows.

Both Fassbender & Mulligan are brilliant. McQueen's directorial hand (like Hunger) is sublime as well.

My favourite new film of the year so far - but given what I've seen so far that's not saying much at the moment.

More in-depth review to follow on my 2nd viewing.

Man I feel for you; if I was to make a recommendation for you it'd be The Iron Lady. It's the more misjudged film overall - but at least there's stuff in there to talk about and admire (specifically the performances of Streep & Olivia Colman).

Unless you're a fan of ice hockey; Goon is just...meh.

I am reliably informed The Darkest Hour is rank, but I do have an irrational interest for alien invasion flicks!

Yeah it is just I have heard reasonably reviews of The Goon, plus the Iron Lady I can see a bit cheaper when it pops up at my local picturehouse. Also feel like something a bit light, so The Goon it may have to be

THE DARKEST HOUR
Yet another bad alien invasion movie [why is it so hard to get those right these days?], which, for the most part, isn’t fun enough to be a ‘good bad’ movie; it’s mostly just bad. A reasonably good first fifteen minutes and a hilarious dumb final fifteen minutes don’t really compensate for the tedium of the rest.

 WAR HORSE
Coming on like a film from a bygone era, with even the supposed realistic depictions of war conspicuously lacking in blood, Spielberg’s latest is nonetheless his best in quite some time.  The episodic but extremely compelling narrative is crammed with stunning images and certain scenes portray the insanity of war in a brilliant way.  Corny and sentimental maybe - but I've rarely found a problem with that!

THE DARKEST HOUR (...and a half....boom boom!!)

Where to start with this colossal turd? In the opening moments, as soon as the hapless Emile Hirsch opens his mouth with an attempt at wise-cracking over the "no mobile phones switched on when on a plane" situation, I hated him instantly. As he & his arsehole of a friend then arrive at Moscow airport & start musing over their fantastic enterprising internet idea that will surely make them millions & millions - I hated the pair of them equally. And as soon as we're introduced to that lassie from Juno & that Aussie one from Transformers prancing around Red Square displaying their obnoxious touristy behaviour, I hated EVERYONE I was supposed to empathise with for the films duration - bugger.

Yet even a set of loathsome characters may end up being a good thing if the film opts to put them through utter misery (casing point the Final Destination series), unfortunately though the only ones likely to suffer immensely through the Darkest Hour is the audience themselves. After 15 minutes of vile, imperialistic exposition; the aliens thankfully arrive & start killing everybody in sight - forcing our "heroes" to forget about any character arcs they've attempted to build up in the opening stages, switch into bland / personality-free "survivalist mode" and lock themselves in a kitchen cupboard alongside the routine cowardly, jerk-like figure who is obviously neither American or Russian & will inevitability perish in the later stages.

And then the boredom, OH THE BOREDOM! The following hour attempts to evoke the apocalyptic empty atmosphere defined by the likes of 28 Days Later, The Omega Man & Day Of The Triffids, yet instead creates the feeling you've been locked in a darkened room against your will for 4 weeks. We lurch from one tedious "lets go here" storyline to, "actually no wait, let's go here instead" plot thread - meeting a collection of scarcely-drawn Russian's along the way who occasionally need a little dose of westernised wisdom in order to combat their cowardly, sexist Eastern bloc tendencies and behave appropriately in a crisis-ridden situation.

We'll even face the scenario of plot logic breathtakingly leaping out of the window over & over again. With electricity being the catalyst for the ridiculous outer space creations to impose their aggressive will against humanity; a character will freak out over a pocket radio switched on yet she’ll be quite content with around a dozen lights illuminating the room they find themselves in at the time. A singular bus amongst many will manage to take on a life of its own in a sort of Maximum Overdrive kind of way, despite the absence of a foot on the accelerator. We'll have a bunch of mobile phones that'll ring as warning signs despite nobody actually attempting to call them in the first place. Our heroes will invent a special gun that can kill the badly-rendered baddies yet will still resort to classic "Russian bullets" that previously failed. The characters will face a capsizing boat, propelling one of them to make it to shore & run a good 2 miles in the opposite direction of where they actually need to go (about the length of the average swimming pool), hide within a bus & launch a flare they previously had no knowledge of acquiring...And then the jewel on the crown of shite; despite the cataclysmic devastation wiping out much of the earth's power supply, a character will still manage to receive a text message on board a nuclear submarine - presumably their network provider wasn't O2?

All of this nonsense would be somewhat forgivable if it were hilariously fun, it isn’t. It’s a hateful exercise in boredom & Western consumerism disguised by the premise of an alien invasion flick. It’s insistence on going “look there’s a McDonalds, a Starbucks, a shopping centre full of your favourite shops you’ll find back in the good ol’ US of freaking A – so you see, us Russian’s are just like you...but in Russian like, ya know?” is reminiscent of the worst possible tourist – the kind that goes to a foreign country yet only invests money in everything they already have access to back home. The Darkest Hour? If only it felt that short....

THE SITTER

In many ways this was actually better than I expected, but not by a great deal..

Watching it frequently felt like a nightmare. Full of goolish, horrid individuals who made the skin crawl - both adult & children alike.

The laughs are cheap but I'd be lying if I said it didn't get any out of me. Even if he's dealing with extremely mediocre material, Jonah Hill as a comedic presence is always watchable. The nervy kid who looks like a young Win Butler was actually okay as well & brought a bit of heart to a fairly nasty film. And even if his character & performance is completely all over the place, Sam Rockwell could stand up on a stage, scream continuously in the mic for 2 hours & I'd still be entertained by him (although his character's HQ was beyond bizarre in the creepiest possible way). Can't go wrong with a Method Man cameo either!

A pretty poor, cliché-ridden effort that fudges the balance between sleaze & sentiment. That said, after the horrendous Your Highness, this is definitely a step up in the confusing directorial career of David Gordon Green.

HAYWIRE

There are definitely things to like in this, but overall I'd say that Soderbergh's realist take on the action thriller delivers mixed results - even if it's nice to see a film of this genre not resign itself to seizure-enduing cuts every second.

When it works, it tends to be when he resorts to the stripped down nature of no music & hand to hand combat situations (specifically one particular encounter in a hotel room), whilst the script itself is refreshingly free of obvious contrivance. When it doesn't however, it's usually because the aesthetic results in a lack of required suspense in certain scenes (the arrival of supposed FBI agents in a forest for example), a flashy montage to condense a specific scenario (Barcelona) & a hugely inappropriate score (David Holmes' efforts work for the likes of Oceans 11 but it completely confuses the tone in this).

Gina Carano certainly has the physical presence but not so much of a dramatic one - leading to a number of the more quieter scenes feeling pretty flat. That said; there is potential in her to be a female no-nonsense action hero & that's certainly a good thing.

A solid if ultimately flawed cinematic experiment.
