So again we start the year with the self-defined 'art film' chip (although, interestingly, a lot of people would put the unnecessarily faffy Joe Wright directed Hanna in that category). On the News 24 Film bit, with Karen Krizanovich (sp?), it was interesting to hear that The Artist is getting a very widespread release in small cinemas all over the US midwest. That's not how you put out a limited interest art film. And I think you're maybe missing the point that silent films are not a genre in of themselves - it's like saying all British films are all the same genre. IN silents you'd get action, broad comedy, romance, drama - and a mass audience worldwide hanging on every frame. The very definition of populism - and exactly the opposite of the concept of 'art film' you're being critical of.
