I actually love this film.

Tom Hardy and Nick Nolte are phenomenal and Joel Edgerton deserves to hit the big time because of this.

Fantastic ending as well - superbly uplifting.

Oh, and it has KURT FUCKING ANGLE!!!

I have to say this is possibly the most generously reviewed film I've ever seen. Hardy was great as was Nolte but Edgerton's character was an utter cliche and his storyline seemed to follow a hybrid Karate Kid / Rocky path. The ending was so infuriating too that I wanted to throw my remote through the TV.

What did you find so infuriating about the end?

Well without giving the end away it was utterly cliched and was out of kilter with the vast majority of the film. The 1,000-1 underdog and all that with the folks back home watching on the big screen and the pretty wife who didn't want him to fight but yet somehow made it to ringside in the end. It felt like it belonged in a run of the mill Rocky sequel.

I wanted to like this film but as a HUGE UFC/MMA fan the 'fights' were too unrealistic for me to watch.

If Edgerton's character were called Daniel Rocky LaRusso Balboa he couldn't have been more of a stereotype.

To the casual observer I would imagine UFC/MMA to look quite boring especially when they are on the ground grappling and looking for submissions, it would make sense for them to give them an more exciting feel in the film.

Great film.

Saw this last week on Netfix and thought it was a terrific film. All the cast were great ( Hardy in particular was a stand out ).

Sure it takes its cues from the likes of Rocky and other sports pics but it was very well done and the fights were fast and brutal. The ending in particular had me in tears.

Oh and its way better than The Fighter.

Love The Fighter but I found the fight scenes to lack any real excitement but that's my only complaint. I think both are up there with the best sports dramas. I like the fact The Warrior, like you say takes its cues from Rocky it does it so well it's hard not to get swept away with it all.

What annoyed me about The Fighter was that Micky Ward was famously never knocked down by Shay Neary in their fight but he was in the film for some reason, even more infuriatingly they made up the names of his opponents in the film even though he had 51 pro fights - why not use his real opponents' names? The film also has Ward's record as 30-7 going in against Neary when it was actually 34-9. Plus the Neary fight wasn't for a world title, or at least a credible, recognised one, it was for the WBU title.
