As we reach the deadline for the 80s poll tonight, we've decided to get a jump-start on the next decade, and this time you can vote for any film from the beginning of cinema up until 1929. Same as before, TRM and I are counters, lists can be of 25/50/100.

A quick tot-up shows I've only seen 14 films from the 20s .

I'll still try to get a list done, I assume we have a month or two.

One handy thing about the 20s and earlier is that there's so much stuff at places like the internet archive.

TRM suggested the 20s earlier and my first thought was to hope you'd take part. Might get some good recommendations.

Is it ok to include some animated shorts? Or are you just looking for feature films?

I noticed the 1925 Phantom of the Opera seems to be getting a new DVD release.

I'm in. I think my normal number 1 might actually be toppled too thanks to a recent rather wonderful Criterion release.

What was the Criterion release?

Yeah I think Phantom has had a complete restoration and so there will be a new dvd/blu ray release fairly soon. I still havent seen it, so now seems like a great time to do so

The Josef von Sternberg set - sooo much nicer than the copy of Underworld I had. And Docks of New York come to that!

We will take lists of 25, so you wouldnt have to watch too many more There is a massive amount of shorts from this period on youtube, or internet archive as Rawls mentioned earlier.

Cool.

Everybody's going to watch The Mystery of the Leaping Fish before voting, right? With Douglas Fairbanks playing a Cocaine addicted detective named Coke Ennyday.

Tragically, he has pretty much no shorts available for voting - his first longer film The Kid was 1921. I think, The Idle Class, The Payday and The Pilgrim will be the only shorts. But watch them and love them obviously, this is when he is just hitting his stride. Everyone should also be voting for The Kid and The Circus, two features which are eligible.

I might be able to scrape together a top 50 that features nothing but Laurel and Hardy and Keaton.

You can vote for films pre - 1920 as well. The list is covering everything from the beginning of cinema to 1929.
