Ides of March is great saw it last night. Gosling has to be the actor of 2011.

I'd put it at a solid 7ish - good performances, but the plot drivers were palpably absurd, and it had, for me, a lot of weaknesses, although I did enjoy it.

I've heard good things about this but wasn't confident enough to put it on my Xmas list. I'll try and dig it out before adding my final list here though.

I found it to be overrated to be honest. It was a film which I admired more than totally loved. It jumped about in tone too much, so felt uneven and lacking in a narrective voice, also it just was not scary enough at the end of the day.

I think 2011 has been a good year - this is my Top 20 from a list of 144 seen:

  1. Drive (Refn) 10
  2. Cell 211 ("Celda 211") (Monzon) 10
  3. The Artist (Hazanavicius) 10
  4. The King's Speech (Hooper) 10
  5. The Guard (McDonagh) 9
  6. A Separation ("Jodaeiye Nader ez Simin") (Farhadi) 9
  7. Submarine (Ayoade) 9
  8. Black Swan (Aronofsky) 9
  9. Hanna (Wright) 9
  10. Melancholia (Von Trier) 9
  11. Never Let Me Go (Romanek) 9
  12. The Help (Taylor) 9
  13. Project Nim (Marsh) 9
  14. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Alfredsson) 8
  15. The Skin I Live In ("La Piel Que Habito") (Almodovar) 8
  16. Animal Kingdom (Michod) 8
  17. Contagion (Soderbergh) 8
  18. Tyrannosaur (Considine) 8
  19. Potiche (Ozon) 8
  20. Outside The Law ("Hors La Loi") (Bouchareb) 8
Still got a few films to see like The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and We Need To Talk About Kevin.
I tend to agree with ElephantBoy on Kill List - there were parts of the film which were amongst the best moments of film I've seen all year but ultimately there wasn't a properly coherent whole, as if the writer couldn't quite bring it together.

I'll remove Barley Mow, because I doubt it'll be allowed, and it does seem unfair to include it.

Sorry, I missed that. I think it'd be a no anyway? It'd be in the same category as the COI compilation releases of safety films which could, in theory, make Apaches an entry for that year!

1: Jurrasic Park? ( a bit naughty but hey it was re-released this year at the cinema)

No re-releases

It used to be upfront in the guide but it's maybe gone. It was especially apt a couple of years ago when there was a year-long Kurosawa anniversary, but in general it's an assessment of the new year, not a celebration of old classics.

Just re-jigged my list to include, ROTOPA, Super 8 and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Hopefully doing that didn't fuck anything up for anyone.

I have a question about Let the Bullets Fly.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1533117/releaseinfo
It hasn't been released in the UK, but most of its releases have been in 2011. What is the ruling here?

It has had various festival showings over here and there is an available DVD release (I have the DVD, PA saw it at a festival (I think) and it was also shown at, at least, Leeds Festival over here).

We normally let them in on that basis - in previous years a few have been in from the London FF because they are in the list for the year of that person. Also, there's no guarantee it'll ever get a wider release over here.

And it will likely be on my list

Being an American bloke, I don't really know about any of the UK release dates, so thanks for clearing that up.

Also, I think I saw it in the thread earlier, but I wanted to be clear, Amer is a go for this poll right?

Here is a top ten of mine, though I haven't really seen that much. Expect a change or two.

1. True Grit
2. Black Swan
3. I Saw the Devil
4. The Terrys
5. The Fighter
6. Confessions
7. 127 Hours
