Thor and Fast Five are both wonderful entertainment, though Thor wasn't the best of last year's superhero bunch.

I dont agree with Thomas McCarthy being on a downward slope. Granted, this was possibly his weakest so far, but The Visitor was pretty special.

Looking at posts where people also list the films they haven't seen I realise I might have been a bit too shortcutty a few posts up - the pic of the beaver wasn't a comment on the film above it. It was for the Beaver.

It was. But, for me, Station Agent was special-er.

He really does create some fantastic characters. Why does he wait 4 years between films?

To do stuff like 2012 to get the money for them?

Everything is better with a Dug.

And an Animal.

Could you imagine Dug and Animal in the same thing!

I'd be quite happy if he gave more performances like The Wire though. McCarthy's three great contributions to the popular culture of the last decade were Dug, a hateful journalist and a chatty hot dog.

Just imagine how much better that combination would be if you added excellent actress Amy Ad...

oh. Hang on.

Let the Bullets Fly - Not as many bullets as you'd think, but Wen's an incredible director and the performances and the direction have a delightful touch of the manic to them.
The Forgiveness of Blood - One of my pics from last year. Marvelously emotional film that gets more and more tragic as the film goes on; some great performances and Marston's docudrama style, presenting the impoverished Albanian countryside with a non-judgmental lens, helps ground the film's seemingly absurd blood feud in unnerving reality.
13 Assassins - Touches of the maniac Miike, but the film's surprisingly conventional in a lot of ways. Still brutal and stylish, though.
Thor - Eh. The Asgard bits look good and there's some good performances here (Skarsgard is never not excellent and Hiddleston acquits himself well), but it's a pretty slight and indifferent affair.

I appreciate everyone's patience while I went through my viewing marathon - this will restart later today.

Also, rewatched 13 Assassins yesterday - while it still reminds me of other things the village fight is bloody marvellous.

Love to hear what you think when you've watched it

A number of 'indie' type films did quite well in SthKorea last year. My impression is that there seem to be a few more people breaking away from the larger conglomerates that dominate the entertainment industry and actually getting their work seen, which was the main problem.

No. 60

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (Ritchie, 2011)

Sequel to Ritchie's buddy movie with coincidental character names.

See also: Well it depends if you want to see Sherlock Holmes really.

No. 59

Troll Hunter (Ovredal, 2010)

Lovely surprise from Norway that manages not only to produce a good found footage film but also completely rocks the monster movie (puns - dontcha love 'em? ) with some fabulous troll realisations.

=No. 57

Kung Fu Panda 2 (Yuh, 2011)

Gary Oldman's does great voice work in the sequel to a pretty watchable original.

Tucker and Dales vs Evil (Craig, 2010)

Very amusing parody on the type of film that turns up on the The Horror Channel pretty much every night.

See Also: Just Before Dawn

=No. 54

Cell 211 (Monzon, 2009)

Spanish tale of a prison riot.

See Also: Against the Wall.

Bobby Fischer Against the World (Garbus, 2011)

Documentary on the life of chess champion Bobby Fischer - currently free on Netflix and highly recommended.

Arthur Christmas (Smith/Cook, 2011)

Aardmann successfuly bring the sweet, something which is remarkably hard to get right.

Troll Hunter, Im looking forward to my rewatch.

KFP2 didnt make my list but it was good fun and I liked the goat.

Tucker and Dale was a great surprise.

I have Cell lying around somewhere.

Bobby Fischer is a brilliant documentary but a little sad too, crazy old man.

I really wanted to see Arthur Christmas but didnt and now Im not too bothered, I just want Pirates.
