Since it is a year to the day it looks as if it is about time for this.

1) releases by UK dates - if only for consistency, otherwise we'd have a gap year to year
2) some leeway with foreign language films, particularly if they've not been released over here - a reasonable and accessible DVD release is sufficient for most foreign language movies, and most will have a festival showing over here.
3) New releases only - with so many film resurrections, new prints etc it'd be too easy to fill the list with non-new films otherwise.

Choose your top 10 films  for 2011 on this basis and post or PM. If you want to post more than 10 - feel free. No penalties in this thread. If you want to double-check a foreign release we can try and get some kind of consensus, too.

Feel free to change your choices up to the mid of January (it would really help if you quoted the post you were changing!).As usual the chaps in the Films of 2011 list thread might give you some ideas.

There's probably a few I should catch on DVD before I try and think of a list. Also, everybody else's list is often a pretty great aide memoire

At the moment, possibly,

1. Confessions
In a Better World
Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame
Detective K
Bleak Night
Poetry
SUbmarine
Troll-Hunter
Arietty
Attack the Block
Neds
Stakeland
The Guard

List gone elsewhere.

The last thing I plan on seeing from this year will be the Artist on the 30th. Once I've seen that & revisited most of my top 20 I'll get my final list up.

Confessions, Poetry,

I'm not pushing or ought

The Artist seems to be well-timed for this so may make a late entry for a few if it's all it's cracked up to be.

Should we maybe do a count on a top 20 this year if a lot of people are submitting more films?

4. I Saw the Devil (Kim Ji-woon)

I'd completely forgotten that was this year over here - which given I saw it back in Frightfest and it was pretty much a premiere is immensely dumb of me.

Yup - the premiere was the GFF in February. I think! Ayoade was definitely there for it.

I understand your shock. It's odd that someone on here has such good taste But I'd happily go and watch any of those again right now, so they get good scores.

Insidious just missed out on my list, so I can understand what that one's doing there. And I quite enjoyed Real Steel.

BTW-Wasn't TCON: Dawn Treader last year? I swear I saw it pre-Christmas.

I thought Insidious was very good for the most part. It kind of falls apart in the last half hour, but it has some really good stuff, and the best use of Tiny Tim in cinema since he played a (possibly) murderous clown. It's the likes of Harry Potter and Tangled being on there that really deserve highlighting.

This might help - apparently 166 releases of 2011 in clip form.

Hugo goes in at number 2. Unless I see something truly spectacular in the next few weeks, I can't see the top 5 changing now.

First time I saw that sig I assumed you had the ID wrong as I just did not remember ever saying it. How on earth did you find it from months back!

I had to use Google and keywords like "Picnic on Hanging Rock", "rinc" and "repressed lesbianism". Those are my most common search terms anyway, so it wasn't that tricky. It's one of my favourite Empire jokes ever, but I'd never temporarily immortalised it (that's not a thing) in my sig, so I thought it was about time.

I'm intrigued. Its a hell of a quote.

I'll put a list together later in the week, when I've had a chance to think about it.

I've seen 29 this year, which isn't too bad. Here are all the ones I gave 4, 3.5 or 3 (out of 4, like Leonard Maltin).

Ah, now it makes sense. I just thought you were always really hard to please.

I thought Insidious was very good for the most part. It kind of falls apart in the last half hour, but it has some really good stuff

I didn't dislike Insidious, some of it was very good (the faces in the background which kinda reminded me of Ghostwatch) but it just seemed a bit high here.

Then again, it's Gimli.

I should probably put it in my sig. I'm actually quite easy to please. The four-star thing does look a bit pretentious, but I got my first Len book in about 1996 and his system seemed very cool, so it just stuck. I did revert to a five-star one, in the name of shameless populism, when I used to do a film column on the paper's website, but I wasn't proud. This is probably the third or fourth most boring thing I have ever written.

02. Rango (2011, Gore Verbinski, USA)
03. The Forgiveness of Blood (2011, Joshua Marston, USA/ALB/DEN/ITA)
04. Melancholia (2011, Lars von Trier, DEN/SWE/FRN/GER)
05. Submarine (2010, Richard Ayoade, UK/USA)
06. Sleeping Beauty (2011, Julia Leigh, AUS)
07. Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010, Werner Herzog, CAN/USA/FRN/GER/UK)
08. The Adventures of Tintin (2011, Steven Spielberg, USA/NZ)
09. Rang zidan fei (Let the Bullets Fly) (2010, Jiang Wen, CHN/HKG)
10. Kari-gurashi no Arrietti (Arrietty) (2010, Hiromasa Yonebayashi, JPN)

11. Drive (2011, Nicolas Winding Refn, USA)
12. Hot Coffee (2011, Susan Saladoff, USA)
13. Rubber (2010, Quentin Dupieux, FRN)
14. True Grit (2010, Joel Coen & Ethan Coen, USA)
15. Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey (2011, Constance Marks, USA)

17. Incendies (2010, Denis Villeneuve, CAN/FRN)
18. Medianeras (2011, Gustavo Taretto, ARG/SPN/GER)
19. Potiche (2010, François Ozon, FRN)
20. Jûsan-nin no shikaku (13 Assassins) (2010, Takashi Miike, JPN/UK)

If Poetry's allowed, shove it in at number two and drop 13 Assassins off the list (assuming Hot Coffee's allowed - if it's not, drop that off the list).
