DARK CITY (1998)

Disappointing.
The concept isn't its downfall and the visual style is heavy but quirky but the overall pacing of the film is just tirelessly slow.
The acting leaves alot to be desired as well.Rufus Sewell performance is un-engaging,Jennifer Connelly performance was shallow,William Hurt was in cruise control and Kiefer Sutherland performance as the ill stricken Dr,who pauses after every word he speaks, was nothing short of an annoyance.

The film has a cult following so in that sense it either works for you or it doesn't,for me it obviously didn't.
2/5

Sutherland is an awful actor, to be fair I can't remember much about him in Dark City, so I will give you that one, but disagree about Sewell and Connelly they are both fantastic in it. Personally really like the film.

JAMES BOND:SKYFALL(2012) 3/5

A good/solid action romp but one that fails in some circumstances due to its length and some performances that dont rise to the occasion.
I also found the 'nods and winks' to previous Bonds to be somewhat tiresome towards the end.
In some ways I was disappointment because I didn't feel the film brought anything new I haven't seen done before, and arguably what I had seen before was better.
3/5

The Iron Lady, Crap I'm afraid, a decent documentary would have served better.

Yesterday I hired and watched Taken 2 and Skyfall. Did my usual and avoided all trailers and reviews before seeing them.

Spoilers !

Was very surprised to see action sequences in the two films shot in not just the same locale but on the very same roof tops, that was kinda weird. I've seen those roof tops in another film as well but can't recall which film it was.

Taken 2 was reasonably entertaining but I wasn't expecting much. The lack of originality in recent action films is starting to get depressing though and using exactly the same stunts ( Bourne's rooftop leaps through windows etc) is so lazy. Still, there was enough in it to keep me amused for the duration. 7 /10

Skyfall started so well but fell victim to poor writing and taking itself far too seriously. Javier Bardem though was wonderful in his early scenes and his monologue was a real highlight ( he would make a great Joker in Batman if ever the opportunity arose again ). It was the film's lack of humour and silly ending that disappointed most and it thumbing it's nose at the older Bond films - oh we don't need silly gadgets any more, just this, it's a radio" - fuck off - and your gun only fires for you ( can you guess what happens next ? ). Not to mention introducing Moneypenny as a new character, why would you do that, we're the new modern Bond but not really, I didn't get that bit at all. The old Bond films never took themselves seriously. It's good that the over the top sexism is gone but they could have kept the occassional corny line or bad pun. Now we have Daniel Craig, who's pout is reaching Derek Zoolander proportions and a new Q who's a teenage computer whiz with a personality to match. I think the makers are losing sight of Ian Fleming's creation and focusing more on what other people are doing with spy characters ans stories recently and trying to emulate their success. I'd like to see them get back to basics. 7 / 10

Today I saw...

Saw (haha)
Has anyone realised that this is such a tricky film to judge and rate?????
On one hand, it is written quite well and has some fantastic twists
On the other hand, it is extremely sadistic and messed up. Plus Danny Glover and Cary Ewells both overact.
But it provides some decent scares and thrills.
I think I have to give it 5/10

I also saw
The Crucible yesterday
I had never heard of it, but it had Daniel Day-Lewis so I though it would be good.
Again, in this film there is a large sense over acting from Winona Ryder and Joan Allen, but as always, Daniel Day Lewis is fantastic.
It is tedious and slow in the first half, but powerful in the second half.
Another 5/10 from me

Spoilers

Star Trek Into Darkness.
Quite a disappointment after the last film, I was expecting this to be at least as good.
About two thirds through I started to get bored with all the "race against time" scenes end to end. Very tedious stuff and a shame considering the
strong cast. I was also looking forward to Cumberbatch on the big screen but despite his obvious charisma and charm he was miss-cast here I think
and came across more like a robot than a modified human. The rest of the cast though were all very good and the dialogue a bit better than the last film,
some nice comedic scenes as well. 7 / 10.

Public Enemies was a bit of a let down for me. I enjoyed it on some levels, plus Johnny Depp and Marion Cottilard are fantastic, but overall it felt slightly incomplete.

Nevertheless, 5/10, sorry empire

I agree with you on Saw. Great idea - terrible execution.

Nevertheless, it has provided me with hours upon hours of hysterical laughter whenever I think of that chase scene where Glover yells "I'M GONNA KILL YA, YOU SICK ASSHOLE!" as if he's chasing a man who has just made an offensive joke rather than a deeply twisted mass-murdering psychopath
