Completely stunning. Powerful, brutal and so so gripping. The best film I've seen for ages, one of my favourite foreign language films ever and the more I think about it the more I want to say it's a masterpiece.9.5/10

Dracula (1931) - At times excellent, even fairly creepy - particularly Dwight Frye as Renfield - and Bela Lugosi has a wonderfully sadistic smile that fits the role perfectly, but the lack of any music whatsoever leaves several scenes with a feeling of 'dead air', which in turn sucked some life out of it for me. Overall good, but not the best version of Dracula. 6/10

Dial M For Murder (1954)

Well constructed if slightly convoluted Hitchock classic about a married man trying to kill his wife (the gorgeous Grace Kelly) and get away with it. Very enjoyable from start to finish, though they dragged the last act out a bit.

Decent sub war drama with Gable and Lancaster trying to take down a pesky Japanese destroyer.

Notorious (1946)

Pretty insipid Hitchcock film that even with the great cast of Bergman, Grant and Rains couldn't save.

As perfect an adventure as it gets, a masterpiece from start to finish.

Amadeus - Director's Cut (1984)

A fantastic fiction of the supposed Salieri/Mozart rivalry (even though they were friends in real life), with wonderful performances, memorable scenes and of course the music of the great man himself. Seen it dozens of times but it never tires.

When Worlds Collide - Lacks a fleshed out plot, characters, relationships and the raw power of Melancholia, but there are interesting ideas in there, and the shots of the planet growing closer to Earth - fake-looking as they may be - still gave me that unnerving feeling in my stomach that I experienced with Melancholia, which in my book is somewhat of a success. 3/5

The Lost Weekend (1945)

Powerful and tragic film about the depths an alcoholic will go for one drink. Bit dated perhaps, but with an excellent script and acting throughout this is definitely worth a watch.

On that title I couldn't help raise a smile and think of Seinfeld:

The Dresser (1983)

Well acted film (no surprises there when you have Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay) about a relationship between a theatre actor and his dresser as his mind and body starts to go. Enjoyable enough for what it is.

The Duellists (1977)

Kind of a weird film from a youngish Ridley Scott about two soldiers who end up dueling each other over a period of around twenty years during The Napoleonic Wars. A bit far fetched maybe and seeing Harvey Keitel in a double ponytail was genuinely funny, but it was superbly shot (as always by the very aesthetic Scott) and it was fairly enjoyable, if a bit baffling for me.

The 39 Steps (1935)

(Gonna get grief again here! ) Another slowish Hitchcock film for me with this one, they all seemed to be going around in circles in it; the finale was pretty good and I didn't see it coming, but the pacing was off I felt. Will give the Fifties remake a go too to compare, though they are different directors.
