So somewhere (I can only assume) in doing production and post-production on The Avengers, Joss Whedon has filmed an adaptation of the Shakespearean comedy with (deep breathe) - Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Reed Diamond, Nathan Fillion, Clark Gregg, Fran Kranz, Sean Maher, Jillian Morgese, Emma Bates, Spencer Treat Clark, Ashley Johnson, Nick Kocher, Tom Lenk, Riki Lindhome, Brian McElhaney, Paul M. Meston, Romy Rosemont and Joshua Zar.

Can it top Kenneth Brannagh's which, despite having Keanu Reeves in, was awesome?

I must say that Whedon seems ideal for this, considering the romantic banter between the two leads Benedict and Beatrice.

The question is which cast member is what character?

Oh no - Bowncoats are going to now attack Brannagh version as being not nearly as good as His Lord, Sir Joss of Whedon's.

Hopefully he's sticking to The Bard's script. I don't know when he would have had time to write his own version anyway... though that would be cool.

Spencer Treat Clarke's the kid from Gladiator right? I bet he's Claudio. And Nathan Fillion - Don Pedro? Sean Maher could be a decent, slimy Don John....

The poster kind of suggests Acker and Denisof as Beatrice and Benedick. Not entirely sure I'm on board with the casting.

Well, an official statement says it was shot in 12 days... so he probably did it during a break in filming. Let's not start accusing the man of dropping the ball on The Avengers already. Calm it down, people.

Bellwether Pictures proudly announces the completion of principal photography on MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, a modern version of Shakespeare's classic comedy adapted and directed by Joss Whedon (Marvel's upcoming THE AVENGERS, "Dr.Horrible's Sing-Along Blog"). Filmed in just 12 days entirely on location in exotic Santa Monica, the film features a stellar cast of beloved (or soon to be beloved) actors – some of them veterans of Shakespearean theater, some completely new to the form. But all dedicated to the idea that this story bears retelling, that this dialogue is as fresh and intoxicating as any being written, and that the joy of working on a passion project surrounded by dear friends, admired colleagues and an atmosphere of unabashed rapture far outweighs their hilariously miniature paychecks.

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING is the first feature from Bellwether, a micro-studio created by Joss Whedon and Kai Cole for the production of small, independent narratives for all media, embracing a DIY ethos and newer technologies for, in this particular case, a somewhat older story.

Shot in glorious black and white by Jay Hunter (PAPER HEART, "Dollhouse"), the film stars Amy Acker (CABIN IN THE WOODS, "Alias") and Alexis Denisof ("How I Met Your Mother," "Angel") as Beatrice and Benedick, the world’s least likely lovers headed for their inevitable tumble into love. As Joss Whedon puts it: "The text is to me a deconstruction of the idea of love, which is ironic, since the entire production is a love letter – to the text, to the cast, even to the house it’s shot in." The supporting cast includes Nathan Fillion ("Castle," WAITRESS) as Dogberry, Clark Gregg (AVENGERS, IRON MAN) as Leonato, Fran Kranz (CABIN IN THE WOODS, "Dollhouse") as Claudio and Reed Diamond ("Franklin & Bash," MONEYBALL) as Don Pedro.

The film was produced by Whedon, line-produced by Nathan Kelly and M. Elizabeth Hughes, and co-produced by Kai Cole and Danny Kaminsky. The super-impressive cast is listed below. Full tech credits (for the extraordinary crew) will be up shortly. The film should be completed by early spring and headed for the festival circuit, because it is fancy.

Oddly enough I kind of assumed Fillion would be doing Dogberry.

With Acker and Denisof it looks more like it'll be Whedon's B&B than Will's.

And do what, exactly? Moan about it? It isn't the first time someone has done a different take on Shakespeare (look at 10 Thing I Hate About You, 'O' or Romeo + Juliet) why is this any different?

You don't like Whedon's 'crap', then you won't watrch this anyway, will you? So, what's the point moaning about it?

No offence meant here Shifty, you're a good sort, but I think (at least in my case) that a director like JW being paired with the greatest writer there will ever be is a little scary. Maybe I was a bit too final in my previous post. I will be more than interested to see the finished article and will hope to be pleasantly surprised. But did it say they shot it in 12 days or something? How is that even possible? An entire (I'm guessing) Shakespeare play shot in 12 days? Wow is all I can respond with.
I'm just scared ok? It's one of my favourite plays of all time and Brannagh's version is one of my favourite movies of all time. Hence THE FEAR!!
Still, it could be worse; it could be Bay doing Richard 3rd

The cast of Whedon's shows used to have Shakespeare readings at his house.  I'm sure this has been building up for years.

SARCASM ALERT
Well, if they had readings at his house it's bound to mean they're all seasoned Globe RSC types. Sorry.
The Leo Romeo and Juliet wasn't bad at all. I only hope JW's take on MAAN is at least as good.
I am gonna start a thread and post the link in here later. Be interested to hear your thoughts peeps....

You know, they do have theatre companies in the US too. Shockingly, some of them even put on Shakespeare.

If Ten Things I Hate About You taught any modern filmgoer anything, Shakespeare is there to be played with. One can only assume he would approve.

As usual Elab, you make a very good point. I was off on one there. I have been suitably place-putted-inned. New phrase (copyright).
I am not afraid of people using Shakespeare as either a starting point, a help in plot and script development or even a complete usage but hopefully from a new angle. And I guess I shouldn't have been so knee-jerk about it. I like some of the stuff JW does. I just never thought to link the two. In hindsight, maybe a comedy is the best place for him to start. I will reserve judgement from here on in until I see it.
The voice of reason wins out once again (that's why you're the fairest mod of all Elab)

Shakespeare in the Park has always sounded quite interesting I think. I'm not a major fan of the stuff Pacino has done, though, but it certainly attracts enough Hollywood names to it.

I wonder if the fact Much Ado being the best of, IMO, Shakespeare's rapid fire banter, with one of his best female characters, with a very potent underlying darkness (Beatrice's demand of Benedick being spat out similarly to the Marquise de Merteuil's chilling declaration of war) along with some added slapstick makes it quite an unsurprising choice for Whedon. It's just a question of seeing whether it's faithful or somewhat akin to those recent Beeb reworkings of the plays in the modern world. Mind you, they laid a rod for their own back trying to keep to close to the Shrew.

Ummmm......my post was about the way Director's Cut worded his post (especially the 'I must take action now' bit). I never even mentioned you or your beliefs, nothing I said was aimed at you. Nobody has to watch this movie (despite being a Whedon fan, I certainly won't) so I think all the 'fuck Whedon for messing with the Bard' mentality is misplaced. Don't watch the film, it's as simple as that, you don't have to watch everything to do with Shakspeare (like I don't have to watch everything to do with Whedon).

Oh, and Alexia Denisof trained in the theatre in England for years if that helps

D'oh! I meant Alexis Denisof. Should have double checked that. But, yeah, trained in the UK.

Whedon isn't going to go into this half-heartedly. As Cynic said above, Whedon used to hold Shakespeare readings at his house, he obviously has a passion for this stuff.

But how can this 'Shakespeare' chancer possibly write dialogue as fresh and witty as Lord Joss? Make Serenity 2 instead of throwing money at this pretender.

I'd rather be a canker in a hedge than a rosei in his grace, and it better fits my being disdained of all than to fashion carriages to rob love from any: in this, though I cannot be said to be a flattering honest man, it cannot be denied that I am a plain-dealing villain. I am trusted with a muzzle and enfranchised with a clog; therefore I have decreed not to sing in my cage. If I had my
mouth, I would bite; if I had my liberty, I would do my liking: in the meantime let me be and seek not to alter me.

No dude. Just one of my favourite parts of the film. Not sure, after reading it again, why I wrote eat me.
