ORIGINAL: porntrooper Really dissapointed in the trailer. If it was anything other than Die Hard, I'd probably look at it and say 'Yea, that doesn't look too bad for a mid budget action flick'. But this is Die Hard, and no matter what anyone says it will always be compared to the great original. Die Hard 2 took the original formula and made it bigger but not too big as to feel OTT, it was a nice natural progression and although the film itself isn't as good, it retained the feel of Die Hard and still had plenty for me to enjoy. With A Vengeance also felt like a natural progression and it was only natural to take McClane out of those confined spaces, but it still kept him as a prisoner of sorts and the bad guys were always a step ahead, with McClane playing catch up to a certain degree. He never felt like a superhero cop saving the world in the first three, he was always the wrong guy in the wrong place at the wrong time and he was always pushing himself through tortuous situations to beat the bad guys, he is at his best when completely beaten to a pulp but with enough fight to win out in the end. The first three had that aspect of the character all the way, but lets not pretend they didnt have the outlandish big stunts that became more prevalent in Die Hard 4. I mean, the rooftop jump, the crashing exploding helicopters and the air con climbing in the first, the plance crash, Annex Skywalk shootout and jetski sequence in the second and the bridge jump, boat explosion and subway crash in part three could all be consider larger than life action stsunt sequences. For me Die Hard 4 didnt go too big in terms of the stunts and action, just in the scope of the plot and the stakes. Having McClane be the one man that can save America felt too big. The threats in the first three were relatively small, with two being heists and the other essentially a prison break. Die Hard 4 shouldn't have taken it up that notch that meant millions of people were in danger, it needed to be a more contained threat, not necessarily a more contained environment. I really would've loved to see Die Hard 4 or 5 take its cue from one of the Die Hard games and have McClane a borderline alcholic gambling away in Vegas before getting caught up in a casino heist of some sort. That couldve been really good in the right hands. No matter what I'm sure Willis will make the most of it, as he did with Die Hard 4 (there were some really great McClane moments in it - the fight in the truck and getting his ass kicked by Olyphant's missus) but it all feels too big. Ah well. In fairness though Die Hard 4.0 was a heist as well, wasn't Olyphant's character just trying to steal all of America's money? I agree though that the scale was too big and although it did have its moments it was just wasn't John McClane on screen, not nearly reluctant or disgruntled enough. That said I did enjoy it as an action film. 4.0 is easily the worst of the Die Hard movies but that says a lot about the other three (my personal order of preference; 1, 3, 2, 4). I'm looking forward to this one and Willis does look a lot more like McClane, even the first shot of him in the lift.
