I almost always agree with the reviews in Empire, but in this case I find it highly unfair. THis movie is all we have left to cherish now that the unfaithful got hold of James Bond and completely ruined it by comitting a complete franchise lobotomy followed by character harakiri. Johnny ENglish has everything a James bond movie should have, played a tad straighter, and without the main character being a clown, this script could have been adapted to a Bond movie with little or few changes. The Car! The gadgets! The locations! Everything one misses about a good Bond movie. Yes, this script is more faithful to Bond movies than the two last real ones that unfortunately now feature a polish butcher for a lead and your average high octane plot downloaded from Instant Hollywood. But, JE is not JB, he is JC. Yes, it is plain to see that what is going on here is people displaying the talent and understanding of mechanisms and character that could have revived Jaques Closseau. THey absolutely nail everything that was so great about the Pink Panther movies.Something that, non surprisingly, the bunch of talentless fools that sodomised that franchise missed. Just imagine what these scriptwriters could do with that franchise, and imagine Atkinson in a large moustache! It's just painful to know that Steve Martin and his talentless buffoons killed that franchise, just like the talentless morons that killed James Bond. This movie, ins short, is as good as any Pink Panther, and thus should have 4 stars. Not least for the sheer audacity to try on a style that hasn't been around since Sellers died, and actually pulling it off!
