I just tire of the idea of X being better than Y because it is deemed more authentic by some odd standard - and I say this as someone who grew up listening to predominantly indie music. The crux should be does the song move you? If Girls Aloud do, and Ed doesn't then it doesn't matter who is behind either record, all that matters is that the record is good, or bad.

I don't have any argument about it. I'm in agreement with you, whatever floats your boat. I just think that there's a saddening glut of mass produced morons who rely on autotune and know how to sell a song because they can do a backflip rather than write a decent set of lyrics.

Just taking Sheeran into usage for the time being, he's worked for years in small venues building up a following. He's learned his craft and while he may not be to everyone's taste there's no denying he's talented. He's worked hard to get to where he is and deserves the recognition that goes with that hard work. I don't see how the same can be said for someone with a sob story, that can barely carry a tune without help and wouldn't have the faintest idea of how to write a song if their life depended on it.

Essentially a nice sentiment, and I largely agree, except with the last bit - if the tuneless one with a sob story sings on a great pop record, all the other stuff becomes irrelevant basically.

This. And spending time gigging doesn't mean someone deserves success. For what it's worth, I think Sheeran is a terrible songwriter, The A-Team is bad teenage poetry.

I don't mind Sheeran, or A Team, I see him as a stepping stone into the singer/songwriter realm for young and impressionable teenagers before they move onto the more advanced stuff. He's like the gateway drug of the music world.

Plus, he's overcome some phenomenal obstacles and prejudices in his life to get where he is today. I think he should be Knighted.

I think it's more that gingers just naturally gravitate towards one another, like lumps of fat in sewers. Perhaps it's a survival instinct, strength in numbers and all that (witness that abomination Redhead Day).

I can only imagine the horror of inadvertently stumbling across a den of gingers
