I loved this film! It's good to see Mr Smith doing something else and doing it well! Think some religious nut has been at your review though!

Saw this at the Prince Charles Cinema screening a couple of weeks ago, and I liked it.

Unfortunately, it's not as scary as it should have been and doesn't quite cash-in on the potential of the story. (A WBC type church killing those who offend their sensibilities is a great fucking hook for a horror film) But it's still the most interesting film that Smith has done in a long while, it has a cool, gritty, early Wes Craven film look to it, it's funny in the right places and Parks and Goodman are brilliant

Its not supposed to be a horror film though, it reflects the reality of current US society. Which is precisely why its so fucking terrifying.

Someone want to explain to me why this is being sold as a horror movie? Cause it ain't a horror movie. There was one point where is could have really surpirsed me, and gone for the horror, but Smith balls it up, leaving a flat, uninteresting and unengaging mess on the floor.

Better than Cop Out, if only for the fact he is trying to say something. Only problem is, I am just not sure what his point is.

I would not call this a horror film. Not one bit.

It was going somewhere interesting...but it just drops the ball. Big time.

And it isn't scary. Think more Assault on Precient 13.

I suppose what I am trying to say is that the ending is

*puts on sunglasses*

a bit of a Cop Out

*YEAHHHHHHHHH*

Gotta disagree with Girv on this one. Its not a masterpiece by any means but its a solid 90 mins of Saturday night entertainment. It actually had more substance than I thought it would (considering Smith's recent track record and probably because I went in with low expectations) and John Goodman and Michael Parks are both excellent. There's some sag around the middle and its peppered with the usual sweary Kevin Smith dialogue but overall I enjoyed it and I'm glad that Smith has decided to broaden his range as a storyteller. 3.5/5

What would you say the movie was trying to say? Because any nuance about cults and so on is shot out the door by the fact they are so OTT crazy they become cartoons.

And there is a much braver, and interesting movie which could have emerged at the end, which could have honestly been distrubing and scary and werid and I would have liked the movie a whole lot more.

I agree with that last part, he could have really left a stronger mark on his audience, however as a whole I thoroughly enjoyed it and they are so bat crazy that you actually end up believing it, that that could happen. I think Smith did well here.

Its better than Cop Out, Clerks 2 and the rest.

But it still feels like a debut movie by a young filmmaker still trying to figure stuff out, and not a two decades old director.

Yeah, although I really liked Clerks but I know what you mean. Still, it kept you interested I feel and thought John Goodman pulled off his part. I thought it would be more gory though as it had been described as "horror porn" which I would say in all certainty that it didn't even come close to.
Overall however I thought it was a good film.

Pretty much agree with most of the other comments. Its a good film but not a masterpiece. Clerks and Chasing Amy are two of my all time favourite comedies and its nice to see Kev try something new but still keep his knack for amazing dialogue. I love the fact the film flits from one genre to the next discarding characters and wrong-footing you along the way but its a slighter film than the premise deserves - overall though a solid 3.5 out of 5

Hey All

Apologies for thread necromancy here....

Did this get shown in any of the mainstream cinema chains here in blighty ? - I understand Smith kept control of the distribution for this one, but I couldn't see it listed anywhere at my local theatres (including the smaller independant ones). Was there any country wide showing, or was it just limited to select screenings ? Or has it yet to be distributed to a wider audience ?

I was looking forward to this - the concept appealed to me more than the director (although that did contribute to the appeal) if I'm honest - but I guess I'll now have to wait for it to be released on DVD.

I couldn't see a discussion on this elsewhere, but apologies if I'm missing an existing thread on this.

I saw it at Cineworld. They're still screening it I think so you still have time to catch it.

It has actually had regular distribution in the UK, by eOne. Smith only controlled it in the US.

Thanks for the response guys - much appreciated

I've had another search, and if it was on somewhere here (Bristol), it's certainly not on now. Which is odd, because there are posters everywhere for it.

Ah well, I guess It might have had a short run - it not being 'big' enough for the big chain cinemas, but at the same time, it probably wasn't 'hip' enough for the couple of independent screens in this area.

Ah well, no major hassle. I'll just wait for it to appear on my rental list

I'm a big fan of Smiths earlier work ranging from Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy to Zack and Miri make a porno, but when Smith announced he was making a horror film, I was intrigued so much so that I waited in anticipation for the release of Red State.
After watching the trailer I was expecting a sort of torture porn, crazy christian movie, but too be honest there is little to no gore in Red State, other than a few executions, I would have thought Smith could be more inventive with his death scenes. In fairness to Smith there is some solid material here ranging from a twisted sermon from a crazy bastard Abin Cooper, played brilliantly by Michael Parks, his performance was so convincing I dont ever want to meet him, Mellissa Leo plays his daughter, truth is she's great at playing shouty, violent bitches.
The story is weird, fair enough but the acting is so good I don't care.
Three kids looking online find a sexy milf who's up for some fun, they decide this is the perfect opportunity to get some pussy, the trouble is when they meet the girl, she is old and decrepid but her tits are big, oh well! The three of them then get drugged by her and wake uo at the mercy of Cooper who makes them and the viewers sit through a twisted sermon, nothing wrong with the sermon other than the fact its disturbing but like A clockwork Orange is interesting and disturbing at the same time.
The sermon talks of Homosexuality, murder, and of how God is a violent bastard who hates everyone. I myself believe in god, I just dont believe he is as evil and twisted as the christians in this movie. Over the years we have been subjected to Crazy christians who justify their evil actions of murder upon innocents by using their religion as an excuse. The mist for example we were treated to Mrs.Carmody, now we are subjected to Abin Cooper ranting on about homosexuality. In fairness to this movie it was well cast and the teens themselves are a likeable, even lovable bunch.
And like almost every character in Smiths movies, their obsessed with sex and talk about it constantly yet they never get laid, the teens also have a tendency to swear a lot, so now I have two things in common with them.
The teens after the sermon are forced to witness an execution of a homosexual man, the teens are so shocked they decide to no longer put up Coopers bullshit and they try to escape, gunshots alert a policeman, and when Coopers men shoot him too death, the sherriff gets involved and the police call in the help of John Goodman a skilled negotiator who is enforced with the task of telling his men they have to kill everyone in Coopers large house/church. Awkward for the teens who are now hostages.
When Goodman arrives he adds a sense of fun to the film and Smith squeazes about every ounce of dry, bad taste humour out of shocking situations, which makes the fact the jokes are funny even more shocking.
Things turn into a real shoot em up near the end of the film and too be honest I wouldn't class Red State as a horror film, in fairness to Smith I loved this movie, but if charcters I liked survived the film I would have bought this on DVD but no its a one time watch for me, that watch being tonight when I watched it surprisingly good quality online.
The problem with Red State is that it is poorly executed, mainly because every character I like dies.
First of all characters I like:
Kevin Pollaks random swat team guy, John Goodman as the well meaning swat guy, Random agent who tries to help but gets shot by Mellissa Leo, some of the other swat team guys, Michael Angarano as one of the teens Travis, the other two teens BillyRay and Jared played by Kyle Gallner, Nicholas Braun plays Billy Ray, I liked the first cop too get shot aswell as John Goodmans wife, the kids at the teens school, their teacher, John goodmans wife. Quite a list, huh? other than that the voice at the end of the film,
Everyone else: Hated them.
All in all this was a good movie but its a shame almost every character I like gets shot.
8.5/ 10, great acting and writing, poorly executed conclusion and awful choice of who lives and dies. Decent flick though.
A warning, this isn't a horror movie but the ending is hillarious, Cooper is in jail for life ranting on an on to himself, but another prisoner voiced by Kevin Smith shouts "shut the fuck up!!!" Red State is hardly character driven film making, the three teens the apparante main characters of the film get very little focus and when they do they usually end up getting, frightened, shot at chased or usaully killed. Bringing John Goodman into the mix shifted the focus and added some dry humour and a decent firefight but Smiths lack of attention towards his own characters is mind numbingly annoying.
This film has made me so wary of christians.
P.S. God isn't as big an asshole as Cooper puts him out to be.
But he's still an asshole.

As a social commentary, it's passable. As a movie, it's above average. For ideas, however, it gets a solid 10/10. Kevin Smith's horror-drama is an exciting excursion into an amusing yet horrific world of religious extremism that may harbour a story closer to home than we think. The story lacks polish, and the plot is clearly sidelined in favour of delirious action sequences and amusing dialogue, and so as a result, the ideas and (quite possibly) controversial religious material doesn't quite gel properly. Regardless, this is still a fun way to spend 90 minutes of your life, with some trademark Smith witticisms, and some interesting ideas.

Haven't watched a Kevin Smith film in a long time but I thoroughly enjoyed this.

I never imagined Smith was capable of action but that one scene with the character racing the escape the house was as intense as anything from the proven action masters.

His last two films were Zack & Miri and Cop Out. Trust me when I say you ain't missing much.

Isn't Michael Parks amazing, though?

Red State: Kevin Smith's return to film. After a wait that lasted long enough, Smith made a film that was worth every minute. The way he managed to handle a violent story was amazing. Although many people will disagree with that, it is true. Anyone else would've made a hardcore actioner, not caring about the character development during the situation. But Smith shows us development and intense filming. This film ends up being tense, horrific and stunning. Shame we'll never see the original ending. One of the better up sides with this film is the 15 minute long sermon. Although it does seem like it would drag, it doesn't. Smith handles the scene perfectly and never deter's away from the main point. This is a must-see for horror fans. And, although nothing like Smith has ever done before (it goes beyond Dogma), it is highly impressive. Shame Cop Out was such a shitty film
