I'm surprised that your review of the new Star Wars Bluray didn't mention the new changes to the film. It's almost as if you reviewed something without actually having seen it...

I dunno - they kinda hint at it when they say

"Lucas' desire for the story to be seen as one seemless story in six installments has never been closer."

You'd almost think they wrote the review based on the PR spec list.

Whatever was written, it wasn't enough dedicated to such an 'event'.

I think the pre-reviews were not aloud to talk about the actually changes to the film, only the look of the film and some of the extras/

'Reviewed' by Ian Freer. I honestly don't think he even saw it which if true is an appalling act for a magazine based on movie reviews.

The review just sounded like PR blurb with added Freer flourishes like the 'milk pops' but not one mention of the 'Noooooooooooo', R2 hiding behin more rocks, blinking Ewoks or redubbed fake dragon calls. I think Empire have either been caught with their pants down or there was a 'Lucas embargo'.

In either case rather than trying to get a crap/fake review in before the release date, Empire should have waited until the following issue. I do hope Mr. Freer wasn't just 'making shit up' for a full page.

Total Film's review states that at press time they had "only been granted a sneak peek inside the Jedi temple" They had only seen clips not the full film. I would assume that Empire had the same access and neither review makes mention of the changes because they didn't know about them.

Probably should have waited until they could lay their hands on the full set.

What? They reviewed a dvd or bluray without seeing it? Shocking! That's never happened before!

It will get 5 stars even if the transfers are not up to standards after all this is Empire. I am a Star Wars fan (Original Trilogy) however not going for this set because with each new release George Lucas can not help but turn the Original Trilogy in to the Prequel Trilogy by adding new bits here and there. Pretty soon there will be nothing left of the Original Trilogy left to even release next time round. And you know he will.

It did strike me as odd that Empire had a ''review'' of the blu ray set before anyone else. All other sites and magazines had was a sneak preview of clips and such.Tsk,Tsk Empire.

This thread raises a good point. To get the review in time for press it would've had to have been done at least 2 to 3 weeks ago at the latest, long before anyone had been given a preview. I'm getting the suspicion that it wasn't a review at all, merely a glorified plug dressed up as a review. Typical of Empire to ass-kiss another Lucas product.

Yeah, we demand answers.

I suspect they did a deal that in order for a sneak peak to do the feature on the Deleted Scenes they said they would write up a top scoring review of the Blu-Ray.

Totally agree. Been looking for reviews for ages and nothing, so was excited to see Empire and Total Film both had them but equally annoyed to see that they were clearly based on press release material. Both are very annoying and misleading because, while the Total Film one talks about popping colours in its only paragraph that actually comments on the blu ray itself (thus a made up line probably from internet clips), Empire makes a throw away comment about the blu ray being only marginally better than the DVD transfer, based on a single clip, most likely viewed on youtube. May be the case, but both reviews are clearly mock ups included because the publication dates didn't fit well, but the magazines obviously realised the clamour for an early review. That's OK, but be honest about it from the start and don't even mention the image quality until you have the clear evidence to support it. Yes, Empire did admit to only seeing a short clip, but to me that means they should have been honest about it and carried the story as a straight news item (more details of Star Wars blu ray released) rather than a phoney review with a star rating. Good to see some people saw through it though. I'm a journalist and it is very obvious what they've done here. Anyway, I've cancelled my pre-order until I read a proper review of image quality. I'm pretty sure that, with such a long wait for these movies, the transfer must be pretty special, but then I also know that Lucas is not slow to encourage multiple purchases of the same product, so the danger of a deliberately dodgy first issue is too much to risk.

This thread has been on the go for two weeks and no one from Empire has commented.

Will we be seeing a proper review of the box-set in the next issue I wonder? I almost purchased a pre-order because of the review in Empire's mag until I heard of all the dodgy stuff Lucas has been adding in and changing. The review doesn't even say if it is the silly extended editions of the films or just the normal ones.

It's really obvious Empire didn't review the discs in hand. They mention a lightsaber cutting out the Blu-ray logo, but I understand this is not even on the discs.

That's been on the internet for months. It's used in promotional material for the blurays, hardly a sure sign they actually watched the discs.

That was my point. The logo was shown at the press screening that Empire must have attended, but it's been reported that it's absent on the actual discs.

I'm pretty disappointed by Empire. I know Lucas can do no wrong in their view, but if they are reviewng the set, I would have expected them to actually spend time with the discs themselves before recommending them to their readership.

Well there you go... Months later and no apology from Empire. Lol!

They could at least have posted a REAL review online, even if they weren't going to print a retraction.

The prequels look better than ever, but I don't think bluray does the original trilogy any favours at all, cruelly exposing flaws which were supposedly rectified by the Special Editions 15 years ago. Transparencies, matte lines and horribly distracting travelling mattes are visible all over the place. And that's just Carrie Fisher's face - Boom! Boom!

Talk about two steps forward, one step back. While this problem isn't exclusive to Star Wars (Alien springs to mind. Like a facehugger!) I suspect we can "look forward" to yet another future release which replaces all the original trilogy's effects with CGI. Probably in time for the 40th Anniversary in 2017. Remember, you heard it here first!

I dunno 'bout anyone else, but I'm still not entirely sold on bluray. While I'm prepared to shell out for recent stuff on the latest format (Pixar, Christopher Nolan and David Fincher especially. And Avatar looks stunning on bluray), when it comes to older, pre-digital movies, I think I'll be sticking to DVD for now. My bluray of Apocalypse Now looks particularly grainy. And I'm already dreading the Bond movies' imminent arrival on the format. Always endearingly shonky (and entertainingly continuity error-ridden!) the early Bonds weren't made with even video in mind let alone HD!
