So I was watching Black Hawk Down last night that was made 10 years in 2001. Among the vast cast there were A-list actors (Eric Bana, Ewan McGregor), character actors who have had a steady career (William Fichtner, Jason Issacs, Kim Coates, Ron Eldard, Jeremy Piven) and young men whose star wattage has only increased (Orlando Bloom, Tom Hardy, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau).

However there were also several actors who, in the early 2000s, seemed on the cusp of hitting the big time but never quite made it. They cropped up in several blockbusters, you recognised their faces, but over the past few years they've come crashing back to the ground, grabbing guest parts in assorted TV shows. For example:

Hugh Dancy

In 2002-2004, this handsome UK actor was Galahad in Bruckheimer's King Arthur! The brave medic Schmid in Black Hawk Down! The Earl of Essex in Helen Mirren's Elizabeth I's mini series. He was screen tested to be both Bond and Batman. And then... Basic Instinct 2? Something called Blood and Chocolate? Guest part in The Big C? Oh Hugh...

Brian Van Holt

In 2003, this man was a regular in blockbusters - Black Hawk Down, SWAT, Windtalkers. Today? A recurring role on Cougar Town.

I know he's done some TV work, but I think Nick Stahl could be an example of this.

He played John Connor in the third of a hugely successful sci-fi franchise, and now I just saw him starring in the dreadful looking Mirrors 2.

As a kid, he had the world at his feet and worked with some of the biggest names in the business - Forrest Gump, The Sixth Sense, A.I., Pay It Forward. Hell, he got an Oscar nom. As an adult, he could have been HUGE.

Now? According to IMDB - doing voice overs in computer games.

See kids, this is what happens when you drink and drive! Spielberg refuses to take your calls.

Either that, or he can't pick up the damn phone. Cause of all the driving.

I remember Empire doing a feature on this in the mid 90s. Apparently Skeet Ulrich was going to be the new Sean Penn.

He was all set to be Wolverine. He had a big film in the can in Mission Impossible II, then there was the need for reshoots, he had to pull out of Wolverine as a result and Dougie went on to star in a film which had the sweary chef in it and has been one of the biggest bombs ever (Love's Kitchen).

Maybe, after playing Louis Tully, he felt like there was nowhere left to go....

He's like Martin Short and Chevy Chase in that, whenever you see him now (not that you do), it's for a cameo.

Wes Bentley is a perfect example (though becoming an alcoholic heroin addict may have played a significant part). Mind, this could be one of those rare stories with a happy ending as he appears to have beaten his addictions, revived his career on Broadway and landed a great part in The Hunger Games.

You are kidding right? He's starring in at least six films this year alone including Sherlock Holmes 2 and he's regularly all over the tabloids. Hardly an "almost made it" actor.

I'd chuck these guys into the thread of shame.

Justin Chatwin

Henry Thomas

....and this guy....

Jonathan Ke Quan

Notice a pattern? They've all starred in Spielberg films and have all vanished. It's the famous "Curse of the Spielberg child star!"

I heard Chatwin has done ok on TV in the US version of Shameless... despite starring in the Dragonball Z film.

How about:

Vanessa Lee Chester

From the heady heights of Jurassic Park: The Lost World to Cheerleader 1 in 17 Again... Oh the shame.

Good topic Timon.

A couple who spring to mind are Thora Birch (American Beauty then Ghost World then nothing)

Emile Hisch who had so much buzz after Into the Wild then didn't capitalise on it (to be honest, I didn't think he was that good, but that's my opinion):

I thought Lillo Brancato had a great, easy-going charisma in A Bronx Tale and could have been a big star.

Sadly this has been what has happened since...

I'd have a lot more sympathy for him if he hadn't tried to wack Chrissy.

Jennifer Grey - Ferris Bueller, Dirty Dancing and then....nothing. Last seen with a new nose and guest starring on Friends.

Alicia Silverstone: Had a huge hit with Clueless, went on to play Batgirl and then after a few dodgy films just seems to have faded into obscurity.

How could I forget!? I must have been blinded by it's greatness

Another one I thought of yesterday is James Caan :

He was fantastic in The Godfather but now the only other film I can name him in is Misery.

They may be his most famous roles but he's certainly never disappeared - from Rollerball, Thief, Brian's Song, The Killer Elite, Gardens Of Stone and Alien Nation to The Yards, Bottle Rocket, Mickey Blue Eyes, Elf, The Way Of The Gun and Dogville (as well as a lead role in the above average TV series Las Vegas) he's got a pretty impressive and varied CV.
