From the ones I've seen.

The Exorcist I really should re-watch. It hasn't done it for me before, but maybe that would change. And in any case I'm a heathen who thinks Omen is better.

The Fly is a simply brilliant film, I really hope it wins.

The Fog I've come to appreciate more than I used to, but I think the competition is just too strong.

The Invisible Man is a truly excellent film, but Gimli her(him? it)self has killed it for me by going on about the screaming woman

My Little Eye has been done better a lot of times, I remember getting the DVD when it came out though and having fun with the different cameras

The Thing is a true classic and will probably win the public vote.

You're not alone, I find The Omen to be much better than The Exorcist, probably because a Devil that works behind the scenes and arranges "accidents" to kill people off feels more suitable to the most evil being in existance than a devil that says naughty words and throws up everywhere.

Well, that's selective. Spoilers for The Exorcist --> What about Reagan's mother's friend, the director of the film she's working on? He's looking after Reagan, and hurls himself out the window and down those iconic steps. <---

I do like The Omen and it's probably got more scary moments that jump at you, but The Exorcist is a film that works better as one that lingers with you afterwards.

I should probably watch The Omen, to be fair.

I'm not a huge fan of The Omen. It's ok, but it all feels a bit too over the top at times. Some of the death scenes are like a snuff version of You've Been Framed.

Actually, I find the Omen really creepy. The atmosphere is fantastic (the wind blowing in the churchyard spooked me out so much) and I'm scared of dogs, so some scenes gave me a serious case of the shivers. Add the sheet of glass and the music (which is fantastic, but is probably sung in Hell), and I couldn't get to sleep.

However, I burst out laughing at the scene when they talk about the nanny.

" I didn't hire her. Did you hire her?"
"NoI didn't, then who did?" (or words to that effect)

It's just one of those films were I get the feeling that everyone thought they were making something classy and it's completely at odds with how desperately it wants to be an exploitation pic.

Can't it be both - or at least have elements of both?

Troughton (and his death scene) are awesome, though.

I think it takes someone really talented to pull that off though. That said, I don't know why I think they thought it was classy because the material is so melodramatic. Maybe it's the casting of Peck that convinces me of that.

I think I kinda get where you're coming from, because it's obviously a ludicrous situation the film is based on, but Peck gives it a gravitas instead of playing up that ludicrous element. But that's why I like it, for the fact it doesn't descend into camp - or at least, it balances the camp elements out with Peck's straight down the line approach.

Quite why we're discussing a film that hasn't been nominated however, is beyond me.

I kind of wish it did go full on camp though. Then it would be rated more along the silly but fun lines of Norman Warren's Terror, rather than a dark and disturbing film like The Exorcist.

I think we're talking about The Omen because nobody has watched any of the nominated films yet.

I have been listening to the soundtrack album for The Thing recently though. It deserves to win just for the score.

All this talk about Cooper made me want to chuck on My Little Eye.  Have not seen it for years, in fact the DVD case was dusty like feck, which made me laugh.
It does hold up well though after all these years, in fact I think the film is more relevant in this age than it was way back in 2002.  I mean Reality shows were just starting to rage back then and camcorder horror did not really take off after The Blair Witch and The Last Broadcast!  Now of course with films like Paranormal Activity and the upcoming Apollo 18, and with Big Brother having its many inmates for what is I believe its 10th time and gaining  record viewing figures, My Little Eye sort of fits in really nicely in today's market!  Its safe to say the film's plot has not aged at all!

Of course I do not know how it will fare on here, you do need a lot of patience with the film because not much happens for the first hour even though it does build up the suspense really well.  The beauty of the film and what I feel is the strongest element of the film is that it has a vicious voyeuristic streak that will satisfy all horror fans.  Older fans will lap up the slow suspense because I love it does not sell out to the gore crowd but then back then the gore porn rage was starting to crawl in the genre.  My Little Eye of course shows how this way works in horror because when we get to that certain gore scene it really does sparkle, such a strong set-piece and very underrated!

Its not a classic by any means, there are flaws of course but its one of the noughties best horrors, but for me there are better films in this round that are worthy of the HOF title!

The 2nd one was of course my Favourite Carpenter flick ever and that is THE FOG!

Sorry guys I love The Thing but Halloween and The Fog are my top favs and the opening scene alone of this seaside horror is worthy of the HOF title!  Not many directors would have the idea of setting up the entire concept of their film in one meaty five minute opening by way of an old fisherman tale and every time I see this beginning I just get swept in again for the entire ride.

I can not believe that Carpenter told me that he does not like this film.  In fact he told me that quite bluntly and I really can not understand why?  There are three brilliant Carpenter moments, the opening of course, the bit where the dead fisherman rises and of course the battle to survive in the Lighthouse!

Love the haunting music, love the tone of Adrienne Barbeau over the radio, it brings back so many memories of watching this film when I was a kid.  You know, watching this today made me realise how close this is to beating Halloween to my Fav Horror of all time!  Really good choice to whoever picked this!

Third is The Fly which is on right this moment, got the double pack which means I be watching The FLY II straight after!

I'm surprised at you rating The Fog higher than Halloween, I thought Halloween was your favourite film of all time.

How did Bradley Cooper's AMAZING cameo hold up after all this time? Is it as a shocking and unexpected a moment as when we first all saw that film and felt our mouths hang open as those words flashed across our minds "OMFG! BRADLEY COOPER'S IN THIS FILM!!!!!!!"

We should be excited, I mean The Coop' has been in The Hangover, All About Steve, The A-Team, Case 39, Valentine's Day... can anyone say 'icon'?

No you got me wrong mate!  The Fog does run Halloween close but Myers is still my idol

For me Cooper is Will Teppin from Alias!  I can not get past that everytime I see him.....the guy who was in love with Sydney!

Was he in Valentine's Day?  I thought he was in He Just Not That Into You?

You missed out Midnight Meat Train out of that list.........

When a fucking legend like that has made so many amazing films, you have to forgive me for overlooking Midnight Meat Train.  I think that's actually one of his only films I can be bothered to watch again. Although the imdb thread arguing if it was anal sex or not with the girl from Popular is more enjoyable than the film.

Imdb threads can be gloriously funny. 95% of films have a "Is this film racist?" thread and 100% of even vaguely famous actors have a "is he gay?" thread. We should do that here.

We should do a thread about Rio being feminist drivel.

it's actually impossible to find out where Red Riding Hood jumps the hungry fish, it could be when Oldman starts talking, the elephant or when the werewolf actually talks.

Cool stuff.
Seen 4:
Deep Red - amazing, my #1 so far
Possession - an insane masterpiece
The Thing - terrific + I love snow
Suspiria - great but not as great as Deep Red

I won't have time to watch any of the others until late September, but I think I'll be OK with cramming. All 8 look pretty cool.

Seems a bit silly that 1/3 of the films come from 2 directors, but I've only got myself to blame here
