The Bucket List (2008)

Directed by: Rob Reiner

Written by: Justin Zackham (Screenplay)

Music by: Marc Shaiman

Starring: Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman, Sean Hayes, Beverly Todd

Unimaginative direction, a weak script, a trite story and some dodgy special effects can't be rescued by two of Hollywood's finest old-time thesps.

Review: It's always great to see two Hollywood veterans bouncing off of each other's talent, creating electrifying chemistry that oozes from the screen. One would expect this from the first ever pairing of Jack "The Smile" Nicholson and Morgan "The Voice" Freeman, however what is channelled through writer and producer Justin Zackham's overly sentimental script are contrived scenes of dialogue between the actors.
The same can be said for the emotion of the story, which follows the terminally ill Nicholson and Freeman as they embark on a trip around the world, completing a joint 'bucket list', after sharing a room in hospital during chemotherapy. The duo bond over life's philosophical questions about faith and the afterlife as well as their own personal troubles, all the while enjoying landmarks such as the Taj Mahal and the Great Wall of China, thanks to Nicholson's character's vast fortune. If only his character had invested his billions into this movie, and the fact that these actors are sitting in front of a green screen wouldn't be so nauseatingly blatant.
Ultimately, if director Rob Reiner had focused more on the close interaction between the buddy movie dream team should've been Nicholson and Freeman, and less on their world-conquering more on their self-conquering bucket list goals, the movie may have felt more natural. Unfortunately what was created was a Hollywood cash cow that desperately tugs at the audience's heartstrings, keeping any true emotional effect or meaningful, philosophical thoughts at bay.
So, unless you're a die hard fan of the actors, I wouldn't recommend adding this movie to any list, be it bucket or grocery.
