It is crazy just how much of an improvement that Lone wolf and cub set is over the previous R2 release.

Sent an email off to K2DVD bloody months ago asking about Barking Dogs Never Bite, and hats off to them for getting back to me today letting me know they've finally sourced one!

Probably not the best version ever made (it's a Korean disc made for the US Korean market* that has been re-imported, and contains no extras), but it's fairly cheap

*A very common occurence (before most of them went Region 0 anyway, almost all Korean DVDs were dual R3/1 encoded), but these are usually cheaply-produced and vary from OK-ish to almost-bootleg quality.  Fingers crossed on this one, then...

Interesting. It's a film that's been on my want list for a long time, but I've not yet got round to doing anything about it.
When I initially looked for it, HKFlix were selling the Korean DVD of it for about $20, and I noted it had 5.1 Korean audio & some extras (without English subs). Looking now, it's OOP on their site, though they still have a HK version available to order, but it has Canto audio only. They also have a Thai version in stock, which is also available at eThaiCD for cheapo, and which has Korean and Thai soundtracks and English subs but no extras.

I realise that this info is really more for me, than for you who has already ordered a copy of the film!

The Thai release of this DVD, as the HK DVD is no longer available.
Supposed to be pretty good dark and gritty crime / conspiracy thriller, with Lau Ching Wan and Tony Leung starring.

Patrick Yau directs, and I'm interested in a couple more of his films - Expect the Unexpected and The Odd One Dies - anyone seen any of these?

Finally received it after play.com first sent out a completely different film. Finally got the right one now!

Is the City of Men film any cop?

I have the series on DVD, and it's fine, watchable, but obviously some way short of City of God. How does this film compare to either?

I'm pretty sure my Barking Dogs was an Australian release. Maybe try some sites over there? Normally cheapish and very quick.

Yeah, there's been an Aussie R4/2 release, but it seems to be OOP at the mo.  Mine turned up today from Korea and considering they said it's featureless, it has listed (albeit presumably subless) extras as:
Trailer
Music Video
Storyboard
Director Commentary

And my postman is a turd - not sure how long this has been in my back garden as I've been working late this week, but the bugger never left a note saying where he put it >:(   At least it's not been raining much

This arrived. It looks as the above, but with Thai text on the cover.
I was expecting the case to be a bit shoddy, but it's alright. It's a slender digipak with a slipcover, and looks quite smart aside from the translated title being "The Longest Nites" (plural), and there's a note on the back saying "For Thailand Only and Not For Export".

I also ordered these two:

I haven't watched it yet, i'm not expecting City Of God levels of awesomeness but the series was ok so thought i'd give it a go.

I actually enjoyed it more than I was expecting. I rented it thinking it wouldn't be worth a purchase, but with hindsight I should have just bought it seeing as it's all of 2.99 on hmv.com / amazon.co.uk.

Don't go in expecting City of God. It's a little different and much less gritty. The plot I believe is based on the series (which I haven't seen), which itself is not remotely based on City of God. The main character is played by the same actor as li'l dice in City of God... albeit older... and not playing the same character. Overall the acting is good, the plot a little more sentimental and relationship based with the favelas & crime as a backdrop rather than vice versa. It's nicely filmed, although a little more polished. Definately worth a watch; just let the beautiful cinematography and decent sound track wash over you and the character development and plot sufficiently entertain you, all in all an enjoyable watch.

City of god.... 10/10
City of Men....8/10

Incidentally, the city of men series available on DVD in the UK (R2) is only half of the whole series (I think the latter 2 seasons, totalling 270 mins):

In the US the full series is available (4 seasons, 19 episodes on 3 discs):

Does anyone know if the whole lot is available on a R2 release?

Might be a while...

Its my missus' BD, and usually that would mean it'd get watched straight away, cos she doesn't have the ridiculous backlog of unwatched stuff that I have, but it's a sore point at the minute, due to some external unpleasantness I'll not go into.

In the last 6 weeks or so and oddly i didn't just put it on a shelf, i watched it.

I've had Lady Vengeance and several others for 2 1/2 years without a single watch.
