SyFy's new show, looks pretty good - but is it? Who's watching it and is it worth my time of day?

Was thinking about giving this a try. I'll pass. Reviews have been pretty mediocre.

The first season is only 11 eps long, and I think there's potential. Like other team-based shows, there's both a "crime of the week" air to it, and also a developing story. Unlike other team-based shows, the Alpha team's purpose is unclear both to us, and them. It's not just about them doing cool shit (which they do) but also working out their place in the world. While their powers are nothing like that of the X-Men, it does share that world's idea that the bad guys aren't black/white "bad", but are coming at a similar idea from another angle that has less caution and concern for lives. David Strathairn is always good value and it'll be interesting where they take it in season two, if it's renewed. Season one seemed much like groundlaying so, in hindsight, it'll probably worth seeing if it gets renewed for a second season before committing to the first season.

Oh, also it's set in the same universe as Eureka and Warehouse 13, so it could be interesting to see if crossovers occur, like has already happened with an episode each of those shows. In fact, a minor character in Warehouse 13 already turned up in an episode of Alphas, so intent is there, without it being distracting if you don't watch those programmes.

having seen the first couple of eps its not bad. just a bit confusing getting to know everyone and what happens to the alphas they catch and where they go. i thought it'd be explained a bit more - like i thought the 1st ep you'd see him putting the team together. not just jump in and they're already an established team.

I think the fact the team is already reasonably well established early on is a plus point. The primary reason shows do origin stories is to 'introduce' the potential audience to the fictional world and everyone who's potentially interested in watching this is already familiar with superheroes, or even not quite superheroes, so that's just wheel-spinning. This second episode was decent, even if they did a far better variation of the cause and effect skill in an episode of Fringe. Still think the title's a bit weak though.

I watched the first episode yesterday, think I will wait till the second before deciding if it has a place in my already crammed TV schedule.

Caught an advert for this last week and series-linked it, only seen the pilot but I thought it was pretty good. Concept isn't particularly new but I liked the group dynamic and how the show seems to focus on the disadvantages as well as the obvious advantages that the alphas have. The guy with the fight or flight power seems to have quite a lame power, he can only use it for five minutes and stil gets his ass handed to him by everyone I thought it was going to be a really serious sci-fi show, but I was pleasantly surprised at the tone of the show; not afraid to poke fun of itself, good chemistry between the team and a healthy dose of sci-fi. Very nice balance. Can't wait to see the rest of the show.

Season 2 starts tomorrow on 5* at 10pm.

I finally caught up on the whole season and I LOVE it. The combination of characters and the interaction between them is what sold me. Finale was cool too.
