I find the Dragon Tattoo case quite interesting. It was being written off very quickly after a sub par opening but has since gone on to make a decent amount of money. We'll never know for sure but given that it was a co-finance deal between MGM and Sony I reckon Sony will have taken the lions' share (pun intended) of the grosses. Given its budget of $90 mill, a world wide take of $230 mill and DVD sales still to come I think someone, somewhere (Sony) is probably making a small profit on this.

The film I'm really struggling to predict is Prometheus. Looks amazing, great cast, legendary director but I can see this struggling to break $100 mill domestic. I hope I'm wrong though

 Lionsgate are now estimating The Hunger Games at $155m, which gives it an opening weekend just behind The Dark Knight. Astonishing is not the word!

 This should be good news for Dredd, if Lionsgate makes serious dough on this film they'll have more money for promotional campaigns for their next few releases.

Lionsgate have had more than a few successes, all of the Saw films have made tons on cash.

So was this level of "The Hunger Games'" success in any way expected? I've not paid attention to it at all, but I saw the estimates for it last week and my jaw dropped.

My Bloody Valentine 3D, Saw 1-7, The Expendables, Rambo Kick Ass (US distribution only: Universal Pictures held international rights) were all big hits.

There was an expectation that it was going to be fairly big by all accounts. I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to box office results and things like that and it's been tracking incredibly well. There were the Twilight comparisons (no matter how wrong), the fact that it was based on a hugely popular book, and a good marketing campaign. Lionsgate were extremely confident that they had a hit on their hands and have signed up the leads for the rest of the books and the sequel already had a release date before the film opened. So yes they knew it was going to be a sizeable hit but I don't think they even they expected a $150+ million opening weekend!

EDIT

Also this means that Josh Hutcherson (Hunger Games and Journey 2 star) is officially the biggest box office star in the world at the moment!

Well it took The Hunger Games just 6 days to become the biggest film of the year (so far).

I would not be surprised if it was the top film domestically of the year (read: US).







Unless Titanic 3D really breaks out.

Thankfully there are normal 35mm presentations as well.

boxoffice.com are tracking it at $44 million for the opening weekend which would be higher than any weekend of its original run (not adjusted for inflation).

It really would be hilarious (ly awesome) if Titanic had a mammoth BO run again.

i dont think anyone did

think it made nearly 500m due to 3D being still new and having the guy from Avatar with the Taken dude and Potter villain, plus it obviously had abit of name recognition

one of those films that no one particulaly wanted a sequel to yet it got one

 So, I just discovered Intouchables just did some 300 million us dollars worldwide and it hasn't even been released in the States (where it has potential of being rather big), beating the WW gross of non-English films like Spirited Away. I have little idea on why I've heard so little on this film still being released.

 H.G though breking records in US is still doing only fairly well over here it's nowhere near H.P or Twiggies opening numbers so maybe it's not as worldwide a hit as everyone's predicting.

Bond - 200m/650m - should be abit bigger than last 2 due to long wait plus the 50th ann
guessing between 200m and 650m is somewhat sitting on the fence don't you think? I think between $350m and $450m

Promethues- 220m/450m - if its rated PG13, may be abit lower if rated R? or even more? (will probably be 15 in UK if PG13 in US...or 15/18 if R rated). Might be even bigger as great trailer and, like Cameron, Scott doing SF again will be a big draw, plus cosmology/mysterious 'wonders of the universe' type stuff is getting quite popular now which this seems to be going for in addition to being an Alien prequel.

MiB 3D - 200m/450m - audiences might not be that bothered about this, could be lower like 300m
meh. hard to care. don't see it making anywhere near 450m.

Titans 2 - 120m/420m - audiences might be abit jaded by Titans after last one, but should still be biggish as what else is out end of march?

GI Joe 2 - 150m/320m - Willis and Rock could make this F&F bigger like 500m
300m
Battleship - 150m/300m - Transformers at sea with Rhianna could make this even bigger..or could be first casualty of the summer
300m
Snow White - 120m/300m - a dark realistic fairy tale hasnt really been done on this scale before but Mirror Mirror may prevent this from being bigger
150m
Expendables 2 - 100m/300m - JCVD, Norris plus bigger parts for Arnie and Willis should make this bigger than 1st but the novelty of an Avengers style action hero movie may have worn off now (plus the first wasnt that great) - maybe the PG13 rating will backfire too?
$150-200m domestic

Looper - 100m/200m - potential sleeper and could do ALOT more if its as good/clever as Inception
won't be. fact.

Dredd - 40m/80m - cant see audiences going for this much
