Isn't that like making a cup of tea without a tea bag, yeah some people dig a mug of hot water but if you were gonna gamble on what they would prefer??
The Alien is so iconic and so loved i think people may feel a bit cheated that it is absent. Especially as you say after many shit films featuring the beast have been rolled out and this one has a once great director.

Don't get me wrong though it will be a cool film , maybe not box office gold though

You're right - the Alien is iconic.
He's also out of steam. It's regarded more as an action figure these days thanks to numerous silly outings since the original film. Scott has noted this:

They squeezed it dry. He (the xenomorph) did very well. (He laughs) He survived, he's now in Disneyland in Orlando, and no way am I going back there. How did he end up in Disneyland? I saw him in Disneyland, Jesus Christ!

I can't wait to see what they're going to pull out the bag. We're going to be treated to something familiar but fresh hopefully. Ditching the 'xenomorph' is the best thing he could have done to keep this thing afloat.

It will do fine on account of being the first mega budget movie out the gate this year. But I don't think it will do great - maybe Tron numbers?

^Yea, probably going to do Cowboys and Aliens ratio (eg, just 10 or 20 million above the budget)

Lorax had a ludicrous opening weekend.
70 mllion? Jeez.

Really intruiged to see how John Carter does: it reeks of a huge flop to me. Anyone catch Andrew Stanton on Kermodes show last Friday? The Chap sure was touchy about financial questions . Can't blame him.

-No star names
-Hardly huge fanbase (maybe in US but doubtful abroad)
-Definitely huge budget
-Title change so close to premiere is not so promising.
-CGI heavy (cough Mars needs moms, Green Lantern, Cowboys & Aliens etc.)

I think John Carter will do solid box office.

For me the real mystery is going to MIB3. It's been 10 years since the last film, which under performed and NO ONE liked. The only real draw is Will Smith who hasn't been in a blockbuster since I Am Legend.

I had no desire to see John Cartera few weeks ago, simply because of the terrible marketing. It just made the film look like utter shite, which I think most people agree with. However, recent reviews and word of mouth have really ramped up my interest, so much so that I'll be seeing it this weekend in IMAX. If that word of mouth and advance buzz starts to pick up with Joe Public, it could do really well. A couple of mates saw it last week and likened it in tone and quality to JJ's Star Trek, which if true could make JC a bit of a sleeper hit.

Did it get a title change close to the premiere? I thought it was known as just John Carter for the past year

JC has 30m opening...but a 70m opening in rest of the world - so not too bad at all.

maybe go on to do about 100m in US and maybe 200m+ overseas?

Hasn't it been the most successful opening of all time in Russia or something? Shame its done so relatively poorly in the US, I didn't think it was that bad. It's certainly no worse than 90% of last years blockbusters.

It still won't be enough to pay back the marketing costs though, and it will still suffer to get its budget back.

It'll eventually break in to profit. All blockbusters do. There's a really great analysis of how this sort of thing really works in The Good, The Bad & The Multiplex. Box office aside any major release like this will pocket a fortune from home video and TV rights.
