Is Cloud Atlas being seen as a flop or a decent performer?

I'm confused because it seems to have to the most limited wide release in ages and had a highest average theater count but some are claiming it underpeformed.

From Box Office Mojo

quote:

Cloud Atlas had the highest debut among this weekend's newcomers with an estimated $9.4 million from 2,008 theaters. That's the lowest nationwide launch ever for the Wachowski siblings (who co-directed with Tom Tykwer), and it's also the worst nationwide opening for star Tom Hanks since 1996's That Thing You Do! At least the movie nearly matched The Fountain's $10.1 million total, though that's really not a ringing endorsement.

This is a disappointing, but not surprising, opening for Cloud Atlas. With six thinly-connected stories set in different time periods, the marketing was never able to convey an actual story, which is the most fundamental part of selling a movie. The insane runtime (164 minutes) was also likely a deterrent for casual moviegoers, while the middling reviews (62 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) weren't good enough to convince cinephiles to check it out. The movie could save some face overseas, where its strong visuals and internationally recognizable cast will help a lot, but it's still going to be a long road to profitability for this $100 million epic.

Warner Bros. reported that the audience was split about evenly between men (51 percent) and women, and skewed much older (77 percent over 25). They gave the movie a "C+" CinemaScore, which isn't shocking given the more challenging nature of the movie. IMAX contributed $1.13 million (or around 12 percent) from 105 locations.

Warner only payed $15 million for the US rights, so it won't hurt them much. It's at $18 million right now so it might make a bit of a profit for them in the long run.

Internationally it will have to do well. I'm guessing they expect it to play well in Germany and Asia. Production costs have been offset by selling the movie to different distributors.

Also when the hell has a 164 minutes run time been "insane"? 1902?

I estimated it only slightly higher than CR/QoS but i now wonder if Skyfall could possibly be the first billion $ Bond?

CR did $167 US/427m forgien = 594m (676m when adjusted)
QoS did $168 US/417m forgien = 586m (624m adjusted)

CR had the publicity of a new Bond plus the added bonus of being the best Bond film in decades, but QoS wasnt too great (everyone went to see it as CR was so good) but SF is looking as if its going to raise the stakes quite abit - the trailers look great (like a Nolan film almost) and then theres the Olympics thing being abit of a worldwide trailer too - everyone loving that. plus its the 50th anniversary.

BOmojo is estimating 78m US opening wkend for Skyfall. currently at 320m and expected to do up to 500m total overseas (non US) so if does around 250m US could be looking at 750-800m total, maybe more, so not too far away from the first billion $ bond

Bond hasn't been as big as Spider-Man since Connery.

I presume that this is now no longer the case given that Skyfall is 50M behind Spiderman and still got plenty of legs.

The Spiderman franchise doesn't just make its money from cinema ticket sales.

Moonraker (Bond Wars) did well - $210m ww in 1979 = $670m in 2012.

Skyfall is going through the roof though - now at 220m in US but 568m rest of world =790m! crazy this is Bond not Dark Knight! (plus still to open in South Africa, Japan and China so maybe it could be the first billion dollar bond - at least unadjusted)

notice Lincoln was gone from 21m last opening wkend to 25m this wkend (+18%) - im sensing Avatar like longevity

Anyone ever checked out the most succe$$ful films by way of "adjusted for inflation" calculations?

Obvs gross ticket taking are easier to work with in the long run, but it's hardly worthy comparing Back to the Future, say, with Skyfall, when the latter costs five times as much to get into.

I ain't bitchin', just wondering Cool thread.

What's so special about Taken 2? It has a very old storyline.

But at least Skyfall and Daniel Craig Bond movies are closer to reality than all the previous Bond films.

So, Bond back to #1 in it's 5th weekend in the US, over $900 million worldwide, and a question for those box office guru's amongst you; could it overtake Twilight in the US?

I think the question now is - will it beat TDKR in terms of WW gross?

Amazing to see the Bond franchise, in film 23, look like it is getting to 1 Billion.

It is amazing and I'm so happy to see it do so well. Fully deserved. The release of The Hobbit next week might slow down its takings though so it might not reach TDKR figure. Then again people may want to see it or see again over the holiday period so who knows?

notice the 2012 preview didnt have any Box Office estimates ( its been a few years since empire did them)so heres a selection

(US/overall worldwide) :

Avengers - 350m/750m - the allure of several superheroes in basically Iron Man 3 will make it bigger than either IMs, but cant see it touching TDKR

nice of you to try and predict the year ahead but boy did you get that one wrong jackcarter

eh? i was only out by nearly a billion.
