Great list, Rawls - some really interesting sounding films on there (mixed amongst the expected perverted sounding stuff).

His Girl Friday is lovely and wonderful - great number one. But Groundhog Day (a great film) higher than Bringing Up Baby (a fantastic film)?!

Taxi Driver - definitely a good film, but not exactly one of fave Scorsese flicks. To be honest I'd rather go for Casino, Goodfellas, The Departed or...

Raging Bull - Somehow DeNiro and Scorsese manage to make an utter cunt of a man compelling and interesting. Great stuff.

Blue Velvet - No.1 tie with FWWM as my fave Lynch joint.

Apocalypse Now - The only version I've seen of this is the redux with that boring French Plantation sequence. I should make some time to watch the original.

Groundhog Day - Proof, if proof were needed, that Murray is a comedic genius. Funny and smart. Yeah, I can see why Gimli hates it.

Once Upon a Time in America - Always found this to be a tough watch to be honest.

Citizen Kane - The film that Transformers 3 wasn't supposed to be. Look, I can see why this such a beloved film, but it's just not for me. I don't hate it, I was totally fine with it when I saw many years ago, but I never felt the need to re-watch it.

Alejandro Jodorowsky Big love in my book, love both films. The first time i heard about him with El toppo and the description was an existential western, i was sold!

The Human Condition I know! i have it but not watched it when i feel the big lad i will watch it in one go. real hard man kicks

This is probably going to sound like a contender for nerdiest post ever, but Rawls, cold you possibly post your list in full or PM me it, without the numbering, as it makes it easier to paste into my spreadsheet of to-watch films and then place in alphabetical order (to avoid duplicates).

Where do people get this idea about me? I'm a nice person, honest.

Groundhog Day is a film I watch at least twice a year. I'm surprised it's so low.

Have you seen the Fernando Arrabal stuff? I think you'd like. Viva la Muerte is on the list, but I forgot I Will Walk like a Crazy Horse. Also forgot The Conformist and Out 1.

What I was going to do, there's a couple of films I forgot when putting the list together, so I was going to put together a little list of 50 or so films that missed out because I'm an idiot or because they were 601, 602, etc and just post the list of titles tonight. I'll post the list without numbers at the same time.

Berlin Alexanderplatz yet again, another film i have but have failed to see

Worry not, it can go on your TV list....  Also, Lovefilm had a problem with their copy anyway - one of the discs was a mislabelled duplicate and they couldn't work out where the original was.

Amazing work. I make that one change in the top 10 and wow! what a change Fantastic work, even if you did go through it this week as if you had a gun to your head!

M - brilliant.

The Apartment - I was getting worried that we weren't going to see any Wilder in this list. MacMurray is the unsung hero of the film.

Seven Samurai - one of the few films that really is as good as people say it is.

Mulholland Drive - yeah, it's OK. Watts is magnificent, though.

King of Comedy - top three Scorsese.

Eternal Sunshine... - amazing.

The Philadelphia Story - very good.

The Snowman - wonderful.

The Innocents - terrifying.

Double Indemnity - yay, more Wilder! And his best, too.

Come and See - horrible, but astonishing with it.

Ran - my favourite Kurosawa.

Bringing Up Baby - hilarious.

The Third Man - yeah, it's great.

Vertigo - again, not my favourite Hitchcock but it is amazing, and Stewart's performance is incredible.

The Ruling Class - decent.

Some Like it Hot - very good, but I'd rate quite a few Wilder's above it.

Groundhog Day - hilarious.

Apocalypse Now - a very real journey into Hell. Astonishing.

Blue Velvet - very good.

Raging Bull - I've come to love it more over the years. I'd still rate other Scorsese's above it, but not many.

OUATIA - yeah, Leone's best.

Rear Window - see my comment on every other Hitchcock film so far.

My Neighbour Totoro - meh.

Stalker - excellent.

My Winnipeg - excellent.

Citizen Kane - superb.

Ikiru - lovely.

Taxi Driver - incredible.

56. The King of Comedy

1982; Martin Scorsese

Bizarrely neglected on its initial release, in recent years the film has finally received the levels of acclaim it deserves. Despite often being labelled a gangster director, Scorsese has always been a storyteller happy to work in different genres and this enthralling black comedy shows one of the great American masters at his best. Longtime Scorsese collaborator Robert De Niro plays Rupert Pupkin, an aspiring celebrity desperate for a break. Rupert thinks he can be a great comedian, but he is in his mid-30s, still living with his mother, and unwilling to do any of the actual work needed to be become a talented comedian. He is the epitome of instant gratification, he wants the fame but he's unable or unwilling to do the work needed. He becomes obsessed with the idea of people on Jerry Langford's (Lewis) late night talk show, even going so far as building a fake set in his basement to rehearse interviews, and he is willing to go to any lengths, including kidnapping, to achieve his goal.

King of Comedy is like a black comedy companion piece to Taxi Driver. It's easy to imagine Rupert Pupkin ending up taking the same path as Bickle, isolated from the world and driven to acts of violence. He channels his rage in a different direction, into this pointless quest for stardom. This was a surprisingly prescient film given that a significant portion of the television of the last decade has been made up of waves of talentless people flocking to reality shows in order to be famous for simply being famous.

De Niro gives a brilliant performance in a demanding role, channelling the psychotic rage that fuelled Travis Bickle and Jake La Motta into a very different kind of maniac, one that can inspire pity and laughter as well as fear. And the film is funny, not in any of Pupkin's attempted jokes, but more in the interaction between Pupkin and Sandra Bernhard's Langford groupie or between Pupkin and his mother. Lewis is also remarkable in a performance that should be enough to silence any of his critics.

Scorsese was the director to first spark my interest in cinema, the first director who inspired me enough to look out more of his films. Everytime I watch one of his greatest films it feels like I'm learning what cinema is supposed to be about all over again. It's become a little fashionable to knock his work these days, usually in some misguided belief that his latest films were bids for an Oscar, but Scorsese at his best is untouchable as far as I'm concerned, and this is one of his greatest films.

I know you disagree but this is Scorsese's best film.

This thread needs more people quoting the entire list.

Ace list, well done for completing.

I've seen about half of the list, I think most of the unseen ones are those really obscure 70s films. Yes, I did a bit of counting and nearly 20% are from that decade, you really do love that era don't you?

Seen 110 or a whopping 18.33%

I own and need to watch about 10 or so and I've added about 70 or 80 films in total to my Lovefilm list. There's a further 20 or so that aren't available on Lovefilm.

Great list and well done on the completion.

This is probably going to sound like a contender for nerdiest post ever, but Rawls, cold you possibly post your list in full or PM me it, without the numbering, as it makes it easier to paste into my spreadsheet of to-watch films and then place in alphabetical order (to avoid duplicates).

Depending on the spreadsheet - do you have Excel? In which case just copy/paste into the spreadsheet - it'll be a single column. Then - it's under the Data heading on the current version - find an option called 'text to columns' - the first screen will have delimited, click next. The second screen gives you a range of options for splitting up the cell - as Rawlinson has used a full stop it's quite easy - in the Other option enter a full stop - hey presto, you have 2 columns, one with the number, the other with the films. CHoose next and then finish.

If you want to rerun without director, then do the same thing and choose semi-colon

If you want to get rid of the date you'd have to fiddle about the with space option.

NB You'll have a couple if small oddities to correct when the director has initials for a name eg F.W. Murnau

3. The Human Condition Trilogy

1959 - 1961; Masaki Kobayashi

Epic in scale, the three films of The Human Condition Trilogy combine to form a near ten hour chronicle of the life of Kaji (Tatsuya Nakadai) an unwilling soldier in the WWII era Japanese army. The film is so immense that a summary of the plot will always ignore so much of what makes it important. To reduce it to basics, we follow Kaji from his early years as an idealistic young man who avoided military service because of his work as a labour specialist. He is sent to Manchuria to help organise the work camps. His left-leaning, humanistic ways lead him to clash with everyone at the camp, and they also lead to him being drafted into the army. Again, the difference in his nature from those around him lead him into conflict, and Kaji stumbles from brutality to brutality until he's forced to lead a platoon into battle. After the war, Kaji is left a wanderer, struggling to make his way home through a world where he has nobody to turn to.

One of cinema's great achievements, a staggering anti-war piece as well as an attack on the corruption in the system. Kaji is a good man whose morals and ethics only hold him back. Rather than being a simple epic, it feels more thoughtful and introspective. It's easy to read Kaji's destruction as representing the fall from grace of Japan as a nation, but the title makes it clear that the finger is pointed at us all. This is a harsh, stark viewing experience. There are startling war sequences, but they don't exist to excite the audience, but to show what a disgrace war is. Despite its epic scale, the stunning cinematography and writing, the film's greatest asset is the amazing range of Nakadai. Granted, it helps that he's playing one of the most fully rounded and vivid characters in cinema, but his performance is a thing of wonder. The trilogy has been described as novelistic cinema, and it's fair to say it has the same depth and ambition as some of the classics of literature. It's a true work of art.

I'm glad to see this so high, but you know, three films dealing very deeply with three different issues, all involving war and giving this only this blurb is a bit criminal.

Criminal as Hitler I might say.

Great list bro, though Sansho the Bailiff>Oharu>Ugetsu. This is clear.

I know, but it was a choice between a brief blurb or an incredibly long one, and that and Real Life were the last two blurbs I had to write and I just wanted to finish.

Reb', didn't get chance to finish that up after all, but it'll be taken care of tomorrow.
