Scottish football? When did that happen?

The passing game, invented by Scots, perfected by the Spanish to the cost of the English.

But no one else, of course.

Its just a cycle at the end of the day.
I'd only be worried if English clubs continued this seasons european form for atleast another 2 years.
And I think we all know that is very unlikely to happen, because the top English teams will get all panicky or succumb to board/fan pressure and buy there way out of trouble.

And plus it wasnt long ago (2007) that Bayern themselves drew against a struggling Bolton at home in the UEFA cup.

Exactly. According to the Guardian the only time there was no English club in the quarter finals of a European trophy (excluding the ban after Heysel) was 92/93. That's the standard, and while this season has been poor Chelsea can still realistically hope to make the semis.

Incidentally, the last time Bayern (or any German club) won a European trophy was 11 years ago. Useless bastards

They (Bayern) also drew against an awesome Aberdeen team in 2007.

What's your point?

If it's a cycle then it's a cycle. If clubs buy mercs to stay at the top how is that a cycle?

The fancy of a rich man does not constitute a cycle.

Put the Germans into your argument then. Strong league, good football, entertainment, good value for the supporters and low costs. Also they are still in the mix in Europe also, a damn fine league if you ask me.

Not using boaby's criteria. They don't often win European trophies, therefore shit. And Chelsea are still in the mix too.

You're quite right. I did say "the most entertaining league in the world" was shit. No, wait, I didn't.

Ze Germans are a bit disadvantaged in Europe in that they haven't quite lost their minds yet.

No, but you implied it was inferior based on the number of European trophies won since it's inception, did you not?

How does saying it's not the best league in the world equate to saying it's shit? There's a chasm in between those two descriptions. My pet beast in not a cat therefore it must be an elephant. Nonsense.

Inferior to what? Inferior to its claims for itself? Absolutely. Ridiculously so. Inferior to a few leagues in European competition? Definitely. Especially if you tried to compare the ratio of money spent to trophies won. Technically inferior? Definitely. Inferior at producing domestic talent? Definitely. International football proves as much.

Given the fact that the EPL spends what must be the budget of a small nation every year in fees and wages then winning 2 European trophies in the last decade is dismal. Sevilla won that many.

You did. You said no-one else in Scotland had a policy as bad as Rangers and they had been the main reason why the rest of Scottish football (Celtic the obvious exception) had been kept down.

And given the topic of conversation and the nature of your posts don't be surprised someone's brought up Scottish football and these things do lead on.

Boaby, I hate to say it because I think you and I see eye to eye in a lot of things, but you are being a bit of a troll in this thread. You are making deliberately pointed statements then pretending you haven't, spreading your hands in feigned ignorance. No one here has claimed that the PL is the greatest or most entertaining in the world (if anything those SKY claims are treated with the sarcasm they deserve), yet you are still using it as a stick to beat with.

Not only did no-one have a policy as bad as Rangers, no-one else in Scotland had a policy remotely similar to Rangers. The OF - and cowardice - are the reasons Scottish football went from disproportionately good to the excuse it is now. Saying that does not even come close to saying everybody but Rangers is OK. Doesn't even imply it.

I'm trying desperately not to bring my arguments from the Scottish fitba thread into this one. I guess what I've said in that thread is there. I can't imagine anyone caring (well, OK, maybe I can ), but if they do then they can read what I said there. As opposed to what Goodfella reckons I said.

quote:

The nature of my posts in this thread is petty rib poking. Scottish football is crap. We know it. The media try to sell it by praising the "tempo" of the game, its "physicality"... no-one buys it. Scottish football being in a state doesn't stop me having fun. Doesn't stop me laughing at the obscenity of money and debt and hype in the EPL.

I get the irony of a Scottish fitba fan mocking European failure, financial idiocy elsewhere in this thread. It's amusing. I expect mockery in return. I'd mock me. Not too keen on being misrepresented though.

Really thought this would be a tough fixture for ManUtd.

Dare I mention Hugh McIlvanney's column in the Sunday Times?

I guess I do.

For those who read it, no, I am not the greatest sports-writer of all time. He is. Great minds and all that.

Not too many sights in sport more scary than when Ferguson gets the whiff of a title in his nostrils. Wolves deserve to go down. They had a chance of going down with Mick in charge, but if they were going to get rid of him they needed a new manager lined up. Now, it seems like they've taken that chance of being relegated and have turned it into a certainty.

I wonder if Mancini is feeling any pressure now. Coming away from the season with no trophies, I think will mean he's out of the door. And the amazing thing is that its starting to look like Tevez is coming back. Who'd have put money on Tevez being at City longer than Mancini! I know that Kompany has been injured. And that the African Nations hit them, but really it should be tied up still.

Close. My hair's not purple and my eyes aren't blue.

But seriously, poking aside, who among you reckon Swansea's approach may catch on?

There's a few young coaches in Scotland with teams "playing football". Is there any in England? Is reserve or youth team football in the EPL different in style from the bulk of the first teams?

I must say I was expecting Dalglish's Liverpool to head toward the Hansen, Molby, Barnes pass, pass, pass, short cornery style of football, though I've not seen much to indicate it.

I for one hope it will. Swansea against Arsenal was one of the best games I've seen this season. One thing that gives me a bit of faith is that being a football manager is becoming more and more a short term job for many. But most fans will save a manager saying "yes, but we are playing well", even if the results are not coming, they have confidence that if the team plays good football points will follow.

It will be interesting to see how Swansea perform in their 2nd year at the top. Frequently we see both players and clubs struggling after they may have been found out and the opposition learn how best to play against them. There is no sign of this happening so far with Swansea and a counter-argument can be made that they are playing better. But if they lost a couple of players, or had a bad start to the season, would their confidence suddenly drain? If passes in the middle of the park start to go astray its suddenly an entirely different game and a once great passing side look open on every counter attack.

That is pure speculation, but I see some similarities to Bolton. Last season Owen Coyle came in and tried to play the ball on the ground. Bolton had some success with that and he won many plaudits. But their early season was marred by a very tough fixture list to start with and some injuries. Suddenly Coyle went from the best young manager in the PL to is he still in a job? I've not really watched them so much this season, but it appears they've only found some form when the very talented Miyaichi joined on loan from Arsenal. You can also look at Utd. They started the season zinging the ball around, playing open and attractive football. This was great going forwards, but the City game showed the approach to have flaws and the shutters were subsequently brought down.

I don't follow youth or reserve team football so I've no idea what is coming through. But you've only to hear of the next great 17 yo who then never makes it to know that step up is a big one and not many players can achieve it.

Sigh.

If it was Ancelotti, I'm sure there'd be an excuse. I can't be bothered to come up with one anyway, and I couldn't really give a toss about England to be honest.

Don't try to tell me that some power can corrupt a person
