I was expecting a lot from a movie that promised comedy, adventure, romance - and ghost-pirates. Depp's performance does steal the film, Keira is a vision, and the skeletal pirates are worth waiting for, but I can't help thinking it could have been much better. The plot seems to go round in circles, the secondary characters are all limp and charmless (with the exception of Jonathon Price's, but that's largely down to Price's ability to make the most of very little); and the humour just doesn't work: all that 'parlez' business wears thin very quickly - and it wasn't funny the first time. MacKenzie Crook is wasted, and who are those other pirates? Surely a film like this is begging for some genuine British comic support: Ricky Gervais, Rik and Ade, Steve Coogan: where were you? If this film had been made in the 60's it would have starred Michael Caine, Oliver Reed and Diana Rigg; with Peter Sellers, Pete and Dud, John Le Mesurier, and Frankie Howard in the supporting roles. No doubt, Irene Handel would have popped up, too. Until someone makes a film that really does combine swashbuckling, comedy, romance and horror successfully - with a good story - I'll watch the Mummy again.
