 First of all, as a child of the 80's and viewing up in the nineties I was a guy who wasn't old enough to go see scream at the cinema, however my grandma, on the release of scream 2 put me in a wheelchair to try and get me into it! Hoping the cinema would take pity on me! So to say no one wanted it, is bull! Sure scream 3 wasnt by any means great (however kudos to castin Parker posey!!!) I think scream 4 was fun, and as mentioned in the empire review, saw and scary movie, however when it got to saw 4 it became a parody of itself! It didn't need a mock movie! It did it itself! I think to give this movie two stars, in the same league as other two star movies is stupendously silly! Anyone else think we should change empire history and have a re-review?

2 stars and you gave red riding hood 3 as most reviews have said its at least a 3 but for scream fans a 4,
The fourth could have been so bad but its still funny has its tense moments a great opening teh best since the original and a really good ending, Just watched this in a packed cinema in America and the audience were loving it .

Best Scream since SCREAM 1 good job Wes Craven

I enjoyed this film more than the previous 3 films. There was suspense from beginning to end. It was also very humorous. I'm not sure why it only got 2 stars, but suspect that either the reviewer didn't watch it or that he/she doesn't like horror films. If you liked the previous films, you will love this one!

Im hooked now on Scream - cant wait for 5 & 6 just to see how far Courtney Cox face can stretch - if it goes any tighter shell give herself whiplash just by blinking
Is it just me or does she look like Janice Dickenson? Shes slowing morphing into ghostface :)

Ok venting aside heres to why they should make installments 5 & 6

-Make Gale the original Ghostface - afterall shes power hungry for fame. Think of it she instigated the whole lot from Maureen Prescotts death onwards just so she could get her 15mins of fame. See here slowly lose it in part 5 because all her sources are drying up for a good book, part 6 sees here go all Emma Roberts on us
-Bring the last two films back to the original 3 characters, less is more. Make it more Sinister and Creepy by implying and not showing until the Final Part and go out in style
-End part 5 on a cliffhanger where Sydney finds out its Gale just after shes killed Dwey
-Start Part 6 directly after events in part 5 (its shouldnt work remember Halloween II -but Wes will make it scary) because lets face it how many times over a period of years can Sydney keep getting those phone calls
-Neve ops I mean Sydney has to die - all final girls sacrifice themsevles if they cant get away from their demons (Jamie Lee C in Halloween Ressurection & even Ripley in alien 3 - scary house in space :) )
-But thats afters shes knocked Gales face back into what it looked like in the original Scream
-all 3 main characters dead -new trilogy brought to a "Happy Ending" - and ill buy the boxset

Oh and before I forget - Scream 4 aint that bad more fun than scares but we knew that already.....& my spelling sucks :)

Having seen everything else at the local flix, I went into this hoping to be mildly entertained. Approximately 90 minutes later, I walked back out again. Dull, repetitive, poorly acted and without a single trace of fear or suspense. Couldn't care less who the killer(s) is/are - Time for Craven to try something new... Don't waste your time or money on this, stick with the original film (forget the other two sequels).

much better than a 2 star film, if you're a fan of the original trilogy (yes i even think the 3rd is good), then it delivers, i can see where williamson wanted to end it though, it would have set up scream 5 and 6 perfectly. empire seem to be off the pulse lately, your highness didnt deserve 2 stars either. for a 15 it was much bloodier than the past films combined, thats what torture porn desensitisation has done to us, and also meant 15 year old chavs wouldnt shut up in the cinema

I think David Hughes said everything there when he said he preffered to watch gorno torture porn Saw movies rather than a highly intelligent horror film such as Scream 4. I didn't like the third one that much, but I saw this last night and it was brilliant - of course a lot of reviewers/company's wont like the fact it's basically saying that you're a moron for liking the crappy, shit re-makes and torture films of the last decade. And Wes Craven was dead against the sequels to NOES - so get your facts right Hughes, or go watch a brain dead Saw movie (where BTW - the plot has been the same in the last three movies) The Scream films rock - and at least they're original and have a storyline.

It made fantastic statements about not only the horror genre being dull and mundane for the last decade (all we've had is shit re-makes and torture porn) but it also divided the generations so that everyone could enjoy it. It was scary, funny and highly intelligent. The acting was brilliant, even Emma Roberts managed to pull it out of the bag. The opening sequence was the scariest since Drew Barrymore picked up the fateful phone in the original. If you don't like this movie, you're not a horror fan, you're either too young to get it - or you just like mind numbingly crap gore films. Scream 4 Rocked - bring on the rest.

 Highly disagree Empire, so your stating that this is worse that Scream 3? Great film, hilarious, scary, well acted. Absolutely loved it, exceeded my high expectations and a worthy addition to the franchise.

 Balls out entertainment from start to finish, tense exciting and pretty funny in parts... the opening was a cracker and one of the best twists I've seen in ages

Fuck Empire now. I'm cancelling my subscription Pull your head out of your arses lads for christs sake! This is the straw that broke the camels back. I've read some shite reviews, don't even get me started on the five star review of 'Atonement' which was a big pile of wank! I almost called it a day after the one star review of 'Taken' which was fucking blaspheny in my book, but this just takes the cake. I feel like i'm reading the Daily Mail or Daily Mirror, another two other fuckin dipshits that know as much about films as I do about brain surgery...(which isn't alot). Sort it out Empire, stop being so pretentious and acting like some fuckin typical, snobby film critics! Rant over.

I love my films, I love my Empire & Total FIlm but you have both come out smelling of cr@p on you reviews of SCRE4M.
I myself was worried that this film was gonna fall flat on it's ar$e but I was hugely mistaken and gladly so. I thought it was a brilliant addition the saga, and really had my laughing, and embracing this 4th part as a geniune deserved gem to the series.
I dunno if critics are too worried about thinking this isn't what we want anymore, however I myself was v impressed by the script, the performances and the new MECCA SCRE4M. I think you need to go back to the film and say sorry to the thousands/millions that may be reading your reviews and (up until now) taking what you say as v educated & constructive criticism. You've upset me Empire! Grrrrrrr!

Why be upset? You enjoyed the film, yes? Well then. I really am scratching me head as to why people are acting so childishly over this review.

I hear you dude, I don't think its mainly over Scream 4. I think its a culmination of many shoddy reviews i've read in Empire. I'm not saying they are always wrong, but finding an accurate review in the magazine is like looking for rocking horse shit.

This film was awesome. I was prepared for it to be a bit dull after the third one, but I laughed my head off all the way through. And it was nice to see a bit more gore. Brilliant film, stupid wrong review.

As a teenage lover of Scream 1 and 2 (and Scream 3 was watchable enough), I was hearing positive buzz on this so I was disappointed to see Empires review. Then, seeing that most people on here were giving it at least 3 stars and good reviews, I went along to see it with renewed optimism. Don't make my mistake. This was Scary Movie 5. None of the original 3 seemed to give a toss, though Cox to be fair can't show emotion after her Joker like botox job. The 'humorous' score undermined every scene. Mind you every scene was the same so who cares. Referring to Twitter, Facebook and torture porn films every 5 minutes does not an ironic self-knowing generational film make. Zero originality (remember how good the car scene in Scream 2 was). And don't believe people who say that the ending was clever. People in my cinema were peeing themselves with laughter at the ending for all the wrong reasons. Spot on Empire. 4th films, who needs them!!!!

Hmm, they mentioned facebook and twitter once, and torture porn...once.  Not sure what you were watching.  Everyone came out of my cinema buzzing, they all loved it and the screen was packed. The ending was very very clever (as was the beginning)

I was an enormous fan of the film Scream movies. Seen the first one so many times that I can recite the dialogue as the film plays. However, such love doesn't give rose-tinted glasses. Essentially, the film pretty much sucked.

The intro scene was beyond stupid, and the vast majority of the runtime was devoted to retarded meta jokes. No attempt was made to show anything in the way of characters, or development. It's just one long in-joke.

Also, not remotely scary. Death scenes are just perfunctory chapter markers on this one. Scream managed to go from Casey's death, to Principal Himbry's without off-ing a character (that's around an hour of runtime) while focusing on actual plot and characters. Scream 4 just joins the slasher-sequel craze of wall-to-wall death scenes.

Most of the problems were probably due to the fact that Kevin Williamson got booted from the film and replaced by Ehren Kruger (again), a mistake so monumental, it makes you wonder what the hell the Weinsteins were thinking!

It's not great, but it's not bad either. While some of the death scenes are okay, the lack some of the inventiveness of the first one, and the killer is a bit predictable. The big cast are wasted, some only having a scene or two. But Craven can direct this kind of thing in his sleep and does create some tension and a couple of good 'jump' scenes, even if the film itself isn't scary, and the script has some things to say regarding reboots and remakes, with a great line near the end the sums it up. Overall, not bad.

I so wanted to disagree with Empire. Unfortunately I can't . This was the most distinctively average film I've seen in I while. While it's still better than the 3rd instalment its not a patch on the 1st 2. The problem for me was nothing really happens much and when it does it ends up into a complete anti climax . I'm afraid there's nothing new to see here and you may as well go back to the 1st two if you want excitement and originality. The killings and character developement are sloppy too.

I couldn't give two shits about Jim Jarmusch. Not that it matters but I am a fan of the Scream films, the first two anyway, and I'm sure I'll pick this up on Blu-ray in the future. If I don't like it...I won't like it, and if I do like it...I'll like it, regardless of this or any other review. But I am somewhat fed up of these self-absorbed, dummy-spitting "hey look at me everyone I hate you Empire" rants that ultimately end up sounding even more pretentious and pompous than the actual critic or reviewer against which these childish diatribes are initially levelled. I disagree with Empire reviews all the time. It's inevitable. Why do people expect to have their filmic opinions and expectations perfectly reflected and validated by the magazine? It's absurd. It ain't gonna happen. And these people end up sounding like tits. A chorus of tits. It's annoying.

So, yes. Tit.
