Good timing by Drooch with his 'setting straight' anyway, a whole two years and one day since Pigeon Army last posted in this thread...

Drooch I dont think PA is around these days to answer.

Sorry you probably wasted your time there to bring up a 15 month old argument

That's fine, the discussion was being brought up by several different people over the years, so clearly it's not just 'PA' who was reading my contributions. Also, I want to have my position tested to make sure it's correct. Pathetic though it was, PA's attempted challenge, and the act of responding to that challenge, helped prove that it was.

Just out of interest, I read your last post and you make several references to a general critical consensus and what constitutes a professional critic. With this in mind, you do realise that it wasn't just Empire who gave Scream 4 a bad review, don't you? The general consensus among most professional critics was that it wasn't much good.

The general critical consensus was bang between 2-3 stars.

Bringing up years old arguments is highly dubious in this context and just a little bit...odd.

Getting smashed in the face with a fire extinguisher by Vincent Cassel > Scream 4.

I think you'll find it's an objective, nay empirical fact that it was Albert Dupontel doing the face-smashing, you enemy of film you.
No doubt the BBFC have lined their pockets by cutting that scene out.

Maybe, but I'm more concerned that Drooch colluded with the BBFC to secure a lower rating for his post so it could reach the widest audience. At least I'm not an enemy of discerning film-goers.

I just saw and ad for Scream 4 on Channel 5. It's on Sunday night. I might watch it - if I can remain objective.

Christ, I hope Monty Smith or someone doesn't do anything silly like only give it two stars. Although he might as well - virtually everyone else did

I don't know how to feel about the exact same flock immediately descending around every post I make, which isn't often. It can be best described as being hounded and teased by a ring of incestuous inbreds, for not being inbred.

Watching genuine losers scramble desperately for each other's approval with beginner-level mockery is adorable, once you forget about the inherent creepiness of their group cyber-stalking.

The attention is flattering, but it would be nice to see some actual teeth in these little jabs - can someone challenge the point(s) I've made before trying to condescend. I know there can be a tendency among you lot to run screaming to the mods once you stop hiding behind each other and actually try to engage in discussion, but there's no need for that, you can have a proper debate without ad hominem if you try. Try separating yourself from the herd for a moment and have a go. If you must use the movie message boards as a space to fulfil your emotional needs and flirt with each other, do so, but try to leave some room for discussing movies, too, mm'K?

Firstly, remember that Empire corrected themselves and upgraded the film to three stars in their more accurate home video review. Secondly, a two star review could be justified if the reviewer showed signs of having seen the film and provided proper criticism, instead of lazy padding about the series' history and a couple of useless sentences about how the film might be received. He then dismissively tosses out two stars, damaging the prospects of the (good) film, and the series. The number of posts in support of the film since then are encouraging, it's just sad that Empire, with all its influence, allowed an incompetent idiot to punish this effective, self-aware horror sequel, which resurrects one of horror's finest scream-queens, in a time of endless lazy torture-porn and repetitive boo-scare ghost stories.

Empire didn't correct themselves with the DVD review, it was written by someone else who obviously liked it more than the original reviewer. It happens all the time.
And you haven't responded to my other point which was: plenty of other reviews said much the same thing about Scream 4 (and gave similar ratings) when it came out 2 and a half years ago. Why does this one bother you so much (I read far more scathing reviews)? And why is a general consensus among professional critics that, say The Godfather and Citizen Kane are masterpieces any different to a general consensus among professional critics that Scream 4 wasn't particularly special?

You comment that PA is "brown nosing" to Empire writers by suggesting that comments you have made are approaching libel. It is for comments like this ^^^ that PA suggested you are approaching libel. By implying that a professional film reviewer in an internationally renowned magazine may not have seen the film he is reviewing, you undermine the reviewer, and the magazine. That in doing so the review is somehow "inaccurate" is a nonsense.

Amidst that vast foreboding wall of soul crushing and utterly pointless ripostes, this was the single thing of note that was worth commenting on, and only then because it tipped over from inane and bored to foolish and misjudged.

Empire writers are paid to write reviews. They are not paid to write reviews that align with your unique worldview. If they're different from how you considered the film, take a note of the reviewer's name and say to yourself, "I don't agree with this person; I shall disregard their reviews in the future". Each Empire writer is different, because hey, each person is different. We are all beautiful and unique snowflakes, regardless of what Tyler Durden would have you believe. Note you disagree, and move on.

Which, aptly is good advice for this entire thread.

Move. On.

As the metacritic link in an above post showed, the reviewer consensus was 52/100, which is three-star territory. Although it needs to be stressed that these are on-release reviews. The user reviews factor in time and reflection, and is unsurprisingly high at 6.9/10.

Your talk of 'internationally renowned magazine' and 'undermine the reviewer, and the magazine' are disgusting. The highest ranking politicians will commit the most heinous deceit, throwing titles and prestige my way only deepens my suspicions.

If a magazine has any self-respect, it will welcome scrutiny. I think it's unlikely that the reviewer had seen the film and I'll say so. Deal with it.

I believe my contribution was reminding you of point 2 in the Forum Rules and Guidelines. "2. Libellous remarks (that could lead to us being sued)." The entire post can be found here. (Re)familiarise yourself with it. http://www.empireonline.com/forum/tm.asp?m=631702

The role of a moderator is to, OMG, moderate.

I'm fairly sure that "internationally renowned magazine" is a fact, rather than an opinion. It is popular internationally. That's renown enough for me. I didn't say OMG DA BEDSTSTSEST MAGAZZIIZNE EVEAAAAHAHHHHH DEAL WITH IT MOFO.

Scrutiny, yes. Unfounded libellous accusations, no. Stop it.

You resurrected a two-year-old argument out of the blue where you convinced no-one the first time around, and then get pissy when no-one takes your complaint that Scream 4 was given 2 rather than 3 stars seriously. I dread to think of the kind of grudge you hold towards people who won't go out with you. And for someone so outraged by the ad hominems, you're not shy of throwing a few yourself.

This was fun a couple of years ago, but you just seem like a full-on weirdo now for bringing it up again so far down the line.

Try separating yourself from the herd for a moment and have a go. If you must use the movie message boards as a space to fulfil your emotional needs and flirt with each other, do so, but try to leave some room for discussing movies, too, mm'K?

The thing is the notion of serious debate on this matter expired quite a while ago. Your arguments have already been masticated, swallowed, digested and shat out earlier on in the thread. Yet you persist like a decapitated head that's still babbling. It's jolly entertaining.
