Im sorry but giving scream 4 a worse rating than scream 3 is ludicrous! at least give it a 3 stars it dosent deserve such a low rating and its alot better than red riding hood than has 3 stars. Please get someone who's reviewed or even likes scream films to review, like kim newman please. 4 stars for the film as its just as good as scream 2! 1 star would be given to you!

 I was initially a little scared by the 2 stars but seeing as the reviewer makes quite generous nods to the Saw and Scary Movie films I remain hopeful

Can Kim Newman just do his own review as well? Really like to hear what his take on it is as he's one of the few reviewers who "gets" comedy in horror. He won't give something a low score if it's trashy, just if it's bad at being trash. Like the 4/5 he gave Jason X which was well deserved imo!

I'm not sure I'd call them favourable nods - just that 15 certificate-esque stab deaths are a bit tame next to the Saw stuff (and probably even the goriness off the first couple of Scream films).

Very true of course that It's only a star rating but ignoring that, that review indicates what I (and surely many others with an ounce of cynicism) was expecting from a belated, unnecessary 4th installment in a series with a now slightly passé concept.

i havent seen scream 4 yet (watching it saturday), & i cant wait.
i'm ignoring this review as it seems that the reviewer is more into torture porn than a horror film with characters and story so i havent been put off in the slightest, i'll be watching it nervous at the outcome of the scream trio and hoping there's a good twist in the mix... i'll give it a 4 just due to excitement lol

It's not really much of a review is it?  He just talks about the first 3 movies for half of it, then starts comparing it to other horror movies (and on that note, I have to say that Saw is not better than Scream).  The whole thing reads with an aura of 'I-can't-be-bothered-and-I-was-in-a-bad-mood-when-I-watched-it.'  Anyway, I'm not going to have my hopes dashed by this review.  Tomorrow I shall be back, and hopefully be giving this at least four stars.

 Despite the lukewarm review, I'm still interested in this. I'm a fan of Craven and the Scream movies. Yes, even the third one.

Also its Wes "When did he last make a decent movie" Craven, and the fourth installment of a horror franchise. It ain't exactly going to be a shock if this isn't good.

 Ah, yes, the inevitable reviews of the review by reviewers who haven't seen the film. Very IMDB. I'll catch it on DVD in a few months.

The reviewer is definitely wrong about one thing, though. House is a great movie.

At least they're not speculating on an actor's sexuality. You have to give them that much.

That's true, it is just one persons opinion, but can you honestly agree with him in that Saw is a better movie franchise than Scream?  I think the reason a lot of people are complaining (me included), is because it's literally a bad review.  Even if, as he says, the film turns out to be crap, the review is still rubbish because he's barely talked about the film and what's actually wrong with it.  It's already a short review without him spending half of it giving a breif history of the previous three...

To me, he's not saying that the Saw franchise is better, just that watching people get stabbed multiple times is more repetitive and monotonous than the elaborately gory deaths that Saw,for example, has produced.

Not that I'm saying Saw franchise is better (although the first one is actually a good film), I'm a fan of the first two Screams but a watered down, certificate 15 iteration of a very 90's concept just seems a bit wet compared to the style of horror films that they've moved on to now.

 I don't always go alone with Empire (T4, Avatar), but I believe they've nailed this one. Everything about this film screams of trying to wring more money out of a franchise that has outrun it's ironically spoofing cliches. The slasher genre is dead, Torture porn is dead, and handycam horror is on it's way out. This was a bad idea from the start.

I have to say, there may have been some pretty long words in there. I had to take all of 120 seconds to get through it, and that's a bloody long time which I could have spent surfing message boards.
